... who're yours? Who gets space in your Ipod despite zero fame? Here are a few I have found wandering the back alleys in NYC (ok maybe just perfectly nice bars with nights devoted to up-and-coming musicians ... mom said no going in back alleys in the big city, ha). I'd like to learn about your favorites. I'm looking for new inspiration here as I download ...

I love

Sean Cox - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBee9WP5xU4 - if you're tied to the military at all, you'll be moved by the song ...

Lelia Broussard - incredibly catchy and infectious

Casey Stratton - grossly underappreciated, interesting countertenor voice, plays an incredible piano. Very magnetic.

Mozella

no idea why she isn't more well known, I just love her!

Hairbanger's Ball!! They're from Chicago, and they're a cover band - they do 80's hair music. They came to Cedar Rapids back in June to play at Floodstock, which is a festival we have locally to raise money for people affected by the big flood back in June 08. They were AWESOME. Not just the music, but they all get into costume - tight pants, big hair, the whole she-bang. I've seriously never had so much fun at a concert. :thumbsup2

Someone else here must have heard of Fiction Plane. The lead singer is Sting's son...I have 2 of their CDs and I've also seen them twice (opening for Dad, 'natch).

A friend got me listening to Poe. I have 2 of her CDs as well.

Gossamer...but they no longer seem to be around. Cherry Monroe, I don't know if they're still playing.

Nox Arcana...they do "gothic horror soundtracks." 2 guys, Joseph Vargo and William Piotrowski; I have all of their CDs and I always look forward to new ones!

I have to go with the local guy, Jon Mclaughlin.

If you saw the movie Enchanted, he was the one who sang So Close

He was just at our State Fair last week, but we missed it.

He also has had a few songs that did pretty well, but he isn't a household name yet.

Black Ship Sky, an Orlando based band. You might recognize some of the members from their entertainment jobs at WDW and other area parks. They are just finishing up their first CD but they don't have a deal with a record label yet. (Not linking because some of their lyrics aren't entirely Dis friendly, but they are on Myspace.)

My other favorites have more fame within their own little niche, but they aren't well known among mainstream audiences so I'm including them anyway:

Gaelic Storm - They play traditional Irish tunes and also write their own music. They aren't as "Rock" sounding as Off Kilter. If you've seen Titanic, they are the band that plays at the party on the lower deck.

Jonathan Coulton - He's hilarious. Definitely more for the Geek crowd, but if you're at all geeky you might like him. Many of his songs feature zombies, robots, or monkeys. He's sort of a Weird Al for smart people.

Grand National is so peppy and fun (I love thier first album Kicking the National Habit )

And I'm totally obsessed with Justin Roberts' Meltdown album. Yeah, yeah, his music is aimed at kids, but it is darn good.

I like them and am going to see them next month at our Celtic Fest!

My contribution to this thread....Paolo Nutini He is with a major label, but many here in the US haven't heard of him. I think he's more popular in Europe. Scottish kid with a really gruff, quirky voice. Great live show. Love him!!!

If you've heard the song "New Shoes" (in a few commercials)...that's him.
