The ugly WOC preshow

We bought picnic lunches, received blue section fastpasses, enjoyed the WOC. But there is another show we saw 1 ½ hours before the WOC show began! We chose to view WOC from the bridge – great view – saw everything and didn’t get wet. The fastpasses stated you needed to arrive to the show 1 ½ hrs before (this was the 9:00 show). From where we stood, nothing was going on in the bay, so we turned to people watch those walking over the bridge. The area is roped off about 10 feet from the bridge railing, and large flower pots thick with flowers are placed under the rope. The idea here is to block non-fastpass holders out. During the WOC show, guests are allowed to walk over the bridge as long as they continue to walk. It’s similar to F, as long as you are in a roped area, you don’t have to walk. Along the rope are cast members placed about every 20 feet with glow lights directing guests to walk and not stop at the rope.

That’s where the other show comes in!

So many people did not know that you were required to have a fastpass to view WOC. People assumed you could just squeeze in under the rope the way you do at F or during the DL fireworks. People started shoving strollers, wheelchairs, backpacks, packages, themselves, and their kids between the flower pots and under the ropes. Cast members ran up and down the rope NICELY explaining to the people that they needed a fastpass or had to view the show from the back view on the pier. The first ½ hour, guests responded very nicely and headed over the bridge to the pier to get a spot. And then, all h--- broke loose. Guests were taking turns distracting the cast members so members of their party could squeeze under the ropes. We counted 42 people who were successful getting under the rope and through the flower pots in our section alone. One lady absolutely refused to move for a female cast member, so they called in a very big male cast member. After about 2 minutes of conversation, she moved on. Another guy cussed at a cast member, saying he paid to get in and he wants his kids to see the show. One lady stood there yelling at the cast member that she knows the rules, and she’s just taking a break from walking and the heat. “You can’t force me to move in a public area, I paid big bucks to come here. Would you rather I passed out?” Several guests came back over the bridge angry that no rides were open on the pier and they couldn’t stand there and watch the show. When the preshow started with the puppet characters, the cast members lost total control. People started stacking up behind the rope. The preshow was loud, and guest couldn’t even hear the cast members. After the preshow (15 mins. before WOC started) the cast members were able to get control back and clear the area. But people tried to get under the rope during the entire WOC show. I don’t know what those cast members get paid to monitor that area during that time, but, it’s not nearly enough. Watching all of it was entertaining to say the least, but I can see someone getting physically hurt in the future if they don’t do something to improve that area during that time. It turns ugly there after 8:00!

When I walked by that area one late afternoon I wondered how on earth they'd keep people from ducking under the ropes. Sounds like they are trying their best, but are fighting a difficult battle. I'm wondering how they know which people belong in there when they take your FP away as you enter the area. The bridge does not sound like a very desirable place to try and see the show.

Oh yowch! That sounded like a mess. :sad2:

I can understand the confusion since Fantasmic has roped off sections for general seating, plus there's no FP's. People shouldn't cram, push and shove to find a seat, but I do think FP's exacerbate the problem because it creates classes of people who are and aren't "entitled" to see the show. I'd be upset if I had a FP and obeyed the rules and waited a long time, only to see that other people squeak in at the last second w/out a FP, because they didn't belong there. Granted, people squeak in and cut in front of others w/ Fantasmic, but it's open to everyone and generally people are pretty good about not crushing others w/ Fantasmic.

JMO but I think the FP system at WOC creates a shortage mentality, which drives up aggression. Get rid of the FP's and devote CM time to managing crowd issues, such late-arrivals pushing others out of their spots, instead of being overworked at trying to keep people out of the show.

And this isn't even the job that many of these cast members were hired for. When I was in looking at my PhotoPass pictures, I asked the girl working there why there aren't as many photographers around DCA this year as compared to last year. We were especially disappointed that there are no longer any photographers taking photos at night except right by the bridge in the main walkway.

Her response?

Almost all of their photographers are now switched to World of Color crowd control starting at 6 PM. She said, "we're no longer able to do the job we love, we have to do crowd control for hours instead."

When I go next week are are doing the dinner deal.
I am paying good money for that.
Anyone wants to shove or squeeze next to me better be prepared to have my 200 pound butt sit on you!
This has me worried as I will have a small child with me (who is autistic) and I am VERY protective of him and people shoving up against him (don't even let me get into what happened at a Giants game).

Perhaps they need to install collapsible metal gates surrounding the area?

Wow. I was on the fence about whether to attempt a WOC viewing in August with 4 and 6 year olds or just avoid the chaos altogether but I think you just pushed me over. To the "heck no" side.

I don't think this should discourage you. I think the Bridge is the only real problem area. The other standing areas are fairly well contained with the paths down to them being guarded by a CM with a flashlight. I think anyone would have a very hard time sneaking into those because it's not as simple as ducking under a rope. On the bridge there on a rope and flower pots -- of course people are going to try and duck under. And I think most are well intentioned and just unaware of needing a fastpass. They see people sitting and waiting the same you do for fireworks or F! or a parade and they think they need to hop in there.

With little ones you need to be in the area at 6:30 to line up so you can get those good railing spots. Then the kids should be just fine seeing the show.

That is also true throughout the Parks. If you talk to those out at Fantasmic!, they work Pirates of the Caribbean, Splash Mtn, canoes, etc.... Those at parades and fireworks are often from Space Mountain, BLAB, BTMRR, etc......

Yea, the viewing area itself is pretty dang shielded.

When I did preferred dining on Tuesday, I was completely oblivious to any chaos happening when I was in my section. I did not notice anyone sneaking in, and those around me were extremely pleasant. I'm grateful that I avoided the madness on the bridge.

We did the preferred dining on Wednesday and I agree completely with 99haunts.

Here is another perspective on it.

We didn't plan on staying for WOC and so didn't do the meals or fast passes. We left the park for the day and decided to come back in late not even thinking about how everything was closed down for WOC. We headed toward PP, walking over the bridge and we were puzzled about why some people got to stop on the other side of the ropes and watch while others couldn't. The CMs kept yelling (well not really but almost) at the people on the bridge to keep walking while the areas on the other side of the rope were almost empty. There was obviously lots of open room for people to stop and watch the show but they wouldn't let anyone in. We couldn't understand why. I thought fast pass meant that you got in first, not that you were the only ones that got in. If there is extra room they should let other people in.

I can't even imagine world of color at Disneyland Paris. They shove and put their body up against you just in a line for a ride. I can't imagine for something like this.

A cast member is assigned to take the fastpass tickets at the bottom of the bridge. Then you walk up the bridge on the roped off side and pick your viewing area; within the roped/flower pot area. Once you're in that area, you cannot leave, because you no longer have a fastpass to return. That's why other cast members are lined up along the roped area, herding people away from the rope. It truely is an unorganized mess through that area, but the view of the show from there is great!

I agree 100%. The fastpass system stinks! And after watching those poor cast members struggle for 2 1/2 hours, I'd say they'd agree with you too.

I do not know the exact spot everyone is talking about but DLR CMs are obligated to keep designated walking ways open for people who want to walk. If they let people stop in those areas to watch shows it could be a mess of people.

Yea, at that point, I think that is the only way over to the Pier/boardwalk area once the viewing area locks down.

Exactly. They also have to keep the designated walkways open for emergency personnel, should anyone need a way in/out of the crowded area. Although many do not understand the why or how of it all, they are assisting in keeping everyone safe by keeping the walkways clear.
