The Tipping point - of buying in; what was yours?

My decision to buy into DVC came after a five night stay at Pop Century. While it was a nice resort, it just wasn't nice enough for me. I like to stay in nicer places, and I look at DVC as a way for me to stay in better places.

The amount of money we have spend on Disney in the past and now that my children are over three and not free anymore. We had planned on going to disney everyyear so this was a good option for us. the fact that hotel prices will keep going up and this wont was a good selling point for us. Remember it is not a financial investment but a lifestyel choice investment. Good luck

With 4 kids there is no more cost-effective way to stay on site "in comfort" and as a cohesive group in one room than a 2br (i.e 2 rooms at an all-stars resort might be cheaper but....) . If I only had 2 kids I doubt very much I'd have joined as the financial aspects made much less sense.

We purchased in early June, '93 back when it was only the Disney Vacation Club resort (now renamed OKW).

We took the tour, sat down with our guide and discussed the entire program. She left DW and myself alone to discuss.

The kicker was the tremendous sales incentive: Free park passes through Dec 31, 1999.

Knowing all the horror stories I had heard about timeshares, kept asking myself 'what is wrong with this picture?' Could not find anything wrong.

Finally just decided, 'we trust Disney', and purchased on the spot.

Went to our off-site hotel, got our luggage, came back to DVC, and checked right into an OKW 1-B/R unit. About an hour or so between initial purchase, and first check-in.

No regrets. Have enjoyed now almost 12 years of membership, have stayed at every DVC resort (including SSR), Paris, and GC at Disneyland on points.

After spending 7 nights in OKW this spring, I realized that even though I have the (huge) work benefit of free/almost free nights in great hotels all around WDW, I will always spend a certain number of nights a year on site. A 4* room 5-10 minutes away offsite is never as attractive as a room onsite, even if that onsite room is $49-99 more.

So my 'free travel' was no longer really part of the equation - I had to admit that onsite would always win out over that free offsite room.

I spend a lot of nights a year in 4* and 5* hotel rooms, and like TLinden16 said, POP is fine, but I am now used to more... Why shouldn't I stay somewhere just as nice while I am on vacation?

Easy decision. Our pattern of going to WDW once a year. Home renov's done. Trust of Disney.(odd trusting a big corp.) Dw doesn't like making tough financial decisions so what better Mother's day gift than to tell her it's already done! Just sign here, here, here,&here dear. Members as of 5/05. :earsboy: As the commercial say's "big smiles on your kids faces -priceless!"

our tipping point was reached for a few reasons. the growth spurts of our 2 teen age boys necessitated our moving away from the value resorts into larger accomidations. last trip we stayed at WL and realized that combining that size of the rooms and longer stays made for the perfect vacation.

one rainy day we stopped by the DVC desk in the lobby and on a whim decided to go to see SSR. the free lunch for my hungry hoard helped in going. when we saw the room we knew that unless the price was not able to fit within our budget, we were hooked. we figured out that with our AAA discount the stay for the WL and other deluxe resorts would surely be an average of 1700 to 1800 dollars each trip. so if we take 10 trips in the next 10 years, which we plan to do anyway, the cost of the rooms would be a little bit more then the cost of owning what we would be paying for the entire price for 175 points at SSR. i know about maintenence and property taxes but it still feels good to own(lease) a piece of a place we love so much.

aslo knowing that i can transfer ownership to my kids made this decision easier

making reservations at other resorts is definitly a plus also.

only 48 more days to our first trip to SSR.
