Ok, first I didn't want to talk about that here, because it's a place where everyone is planning a happy event. But I am so angry that I need to write how I am feeling. I am getting married in December, and everybody talks about the flu.

And people around me who say : you should cancel now your wedding, you'll be sick or they will close the frontiers and the people won't be allowed to go abroad or take the plane.:headache::headache::headache:
I am getting fed up with this remarks, the whole day.

Do you meet the same difficulties ? Are you worried about this for your wedding ?

In the states they stopped the pandemic end of the world media coverage a while ago. I would not cancel the wedding. Swine flu is the same as regular flu. Just ignore everything.

in the uk its the same.

Like any seasonal flu the swine flu is killing people but i dont think its any different t a seasonal flu just its earlier

Dont worry about the scaremongers and the media. Here in the uk they dont even test for swine flu now, if you show any of the symptoms you get the drugs and classed as having it! you could just have the normal flu

Ditto - my step-mom got the swine flu (she lives in Texas) and she actually said the regular flu was much worse. Plus they're testing a vaccine for it. But that's the media for you!

Yeah, pretty quite about it over here now. And..in the off chance that you would become ill or they wouldn't allow travel. You can postpone and depending on time frames, usually without penalty. I certainly wouldn't let that dampen my spirits or my planning ! Party on!!!:cool1:

Well, I'm glad to see that Americans aren't the only ones who have to deal with ridiculous, sensational media.

As other posters have said, no one has cared about or even mentioned the swine flu over here for months. Do not cancel your wedding.

You shouldn't have to worry. Reports of the swine flu here in the US are beginning to die down.

But there is no harm in taking precautions, right? ;) Another bride posted a thread with similar concerns right when the H1N1 thing broke out. Here are the tips I offered her:

- Do you regularly get a flu shot? Maybe before you leave next time, a couple weeks beforehand, look into getting one.
- Trying drinking only bottled water. I know Lurkyloo is a fan of buying tons of bottled water from a grocery store and bringing it to her hotel room (a lot cheaper than Disney prices). And if you are doing welcome bags for your guests, include some bottles of water for them as well.
- Load up on Pepto and other such drugs before the trip. It is best to be prepared.
- If you do get sick, just remember BRAT - eat bananas, (white) rice, applesauce, and (white) toast. You may want to stock up on the individual serving sizes of applesauce to keep in the room also. And drink only water and clear sodas.

Here is the thread for other people's advice as well:

Thanks for the link and the advise.
If a vaccin is released this year before I leave for Orlando I will do it (it will be too bad to be ill during honeymoon).
No problem, I always take some medicine with me when I go abroad.

Please please please don't cancel your wedding for fear of the swine flu. The swine flu was blown out of proportions completely and it is probably lower on the fear level list, below plane crashes and definitely below car accidents! You wouldn't avoid transportation for those fears would you??? That would be ridiculous.

Here's the comparison between seasonal flu and the swine flu. It's a little morbid but bare with me:

According to the CDC's update of the H1N1 virus from July 17, 2009, there have been 40,617 cases reported with 263 associated deaths in the US and surrounding territories. While this is of course tragic and seems scary, compare this with the seasonal flu:
"While each flu season is unique, but it is estimated that, on average, approximately 5% to 20% of U.S. residents get the flu, and more than 200,000 persons are hospitalized for flu-related complications each year. About 36,000 Americans die on average per year from the complications of flu."

You wouldn't cancel your wedding for fear of the regular flu, would you? So please dont' do so for some mediacrazed scapegoat that has been blown out of proportions to distract us from real problems...like the economy.

(Sorry not trying to be on a soapbox, I'm just a science teacher who is driven crazy by this unnecessary fear)
