Part 1 - The Journey South - Th July 30th
I had to work in the morning but had left home having packed the night before and leaving the bags ready to load into the car. During the morning I also visited the clinic and was given the go ahead to be able to swim as my arm was sufficiently healed but was given waterproof dressings to use (which proved to be useless).
I arrived home from work about 1.30 and quickly got changed, loaded the car and we were off. We were having to travel quite light as we were bringing a lot of Joel's belongings home with us as he is leaving Cambridge to head back North for a year.
The plan was to drive to Cambridge, collect Joel, drive to Ashford, grab some food and stay at the Travel Lodge overnight ready to go through the tunnel in the morning. The journey down was uneventful but busy. It took us longer than normal to reach Cambridge - we got there about 6.00 only to find Joel wasnt at home. We had told him we would arrive about tea time. We decided to phone him to see where he was and he was at a friends about 20 mins away so there was nothing we could do but sit in the car and wait. He apparently had sent a text to DH in the morning asking us to let him know when we were setting off then he would know what time to be at home and pack. However as usual DH hadnt bothered to switch his phone on so we hadnt got it.
He arrived home and started to quickly pack/throw things into a bag. By this time it was 7pm and we were all hungry so we decided to go for something to eat in Cambridge before we left so we went to our usual haunt Frankie and Bennys. I had the Chicken Sandwich and fries, DH the Sticky chicken salad with fries, Joel the Calzone and Charys the kids chicken burger. DH and Charys then had dessert while Joel and I had a latte.
It was a good job we had decided to eat in Cambridge as Joel remembered he had left his travel insurance documents at home so it was back to Joels to collect it then we were finally on our way to Ashford.
We arrived at Ashford about 10ish and flopped into bed exhausted ready for the next part of our journey the next day.
