Usually I have a ton of work to do on Thursdays since I'm such a productive person :p but today's homework load was actually not that bad...

Same here, actually. I had two tests today so I don't have homework in those classes :thumbsup2

I actually nicknamed Thursdays "Crapload Thursdays" since I put off doing my weekly APUSH essays until Thursday night and then have a ton of other homework to do, so tonight is a nice chill night.

Got my homework AND the mopping done. :goodvibes

I am so happy. My cousin had to do a report on who really inspires him and he picked me! :goodvibes

The Chinese: REPECT THEIR ELDERS

Everyone should respect their elders, even if they're not even related to you! They're much older than you, and they know what they're talking about. It's just rude not to. Life lesson there, to certain people (person)...

Awh yeah!
(don't even like HP, haha, I just like the name and the fact that a bunch of quizzes keep placing me there)
APUSH- Been there, done that!

I actually really like the class, I have a lot of friends in there, the teacher is awesome, and today we had a test on the events leading up to the Revolutionary War and I was the first person to correctly identify the Townshend Acts.
-end of geek tangent-

Marine Biology notes from last week (?)

Solutions and Mixtures in Water
• Solution
o When molecules of one substance are homogenously dispersed among the molecules of another substance (ex: salt water)
• Mixture
o When two or more substances “mix” yet retain their individuality (ex: coffee grounds & iron)

Salts and Salinity
• Salinity
o Total quality of all dissolved inorganic solids in seawater
• Sodium chloride
o (Rock salt or halite) is the most common and abundant sea salt
• Measuring salinity
o Parts per thousand (0/00)
o Grams of salt per kg of solution
o Ocean’s salinity varies from near zero at river mouths to more than 40 0/00 in confined, arid regions
o The proportion of the different dissolved salts never change, only the relative amount of water

Principle of Constant Proportions
• In seawater no matter how much the salinity varies, the proportions of several key inorganic elements and compounds do not change. Only the amount of water and salinity changes
o Constant relationship of proportions in seawater is called the principle of constant proportions
o This principle does not apply to everything dissolved in seawater, only dissolved sea salts.

Dissolved Solids in Seawater
• Next to hydrogen and oxygen, chloride an sodium are the most abundant chemicals in seawater

Determining Salinity, Temperature, and Depth
• Chloride accounts for 55.04% of dissolved solids
• Formula for determining salinity is based on the chlorine compounds
o Salinity 0/00 = 1.80655 x chlorinity 0/00
o Sample of seawater is tested at 19
o Salinity 0/00 = 1.80655 x 19.2 0/000
o Salinity 0/00 = 34.68 0/00

Why the Seas are Salty
• Source of Sea Salts
o Minerals and chemicals eroding & dissolving into fresh water flowing into the ocean
o Waves & surf appear to contribute by eroding coastal rock
o Hydrothermal vents change seawater by adding some materials while removing others
o The ocean is said to be in chemical equilibrium

Salinity Temperature and Water Density
• Although the ocean’s average salinity is about 35 0/00, it isn’t uniform
• Precipitation decreases salinity
o Rainfall decreases salinity by adding fresh water
o Freshwater input from rivers lowers salinity
• Evaporation increases salinity
o Removes freshwater
• Salinity and temperature also vary with depth
o Density differences causes water to separate into layers
o High-density water lies beneath low-density water
