The quest for food that isn't a burger and fries - UPDATED 7/28

Yep, Rochester, NY! We actually live in Batavia and go back and fourth between flying out of Buffalo and Rochester. DH's parents live about 10 min away from the airport in Chili so we prefer ROC, and the Jetblue deal was awesome!

I'm trying to remember what time we got there. Our plane landed right on time at 9:30am. I think we had about 30 min of walking around the airport because they had moved Magical Express since we had been there in Jan. I want to say we were checking in around 11, but for some reason that doesn't seem right because there weren't any long lines at check in. I just checked my text messages though and I sent FIL one at 11:40am and we were heading out the door to the parks. We were in AK by noon. So I would say we must have checked in around 11am because we took a little break before heading to the parks.

It really is an awesome flight, I can't find it for Nov and I'm really bummed!

We did have ME take care of our bags, which was great! We just headed right to the parks and when we came back, there they were. It was really convenient, especially at the airport. I loved not having to wait at baggage claim.

Awesome! Thanks! I'm on that flight this Saturday :woohoo: and again in October. I've been trying to figure out a timeline for this weekend because my brother is meeting me at the resort that morning (he lives in the Tampa area.) But I've never done ME before, so I had no idea what to expect. I'll tell him 10:30 and he'll be there by 11 ;)

I hope they're not getting rid of that direct flight! It's always packed when I take it!! It's an awesome flight & time! (I live 15 minutes from the airport, but on the other side of Rochester.) I'll be so bummed :sad1:

Hey Batavia!! Attica signing on here!

Oh man, it's a Western NY party! party:

Your daughter is adorabl and now she is addicted to dole whipps, better get the recipe.

So this day was a fly by the seat of your pants day. I had initially planned for us to go to MK at rope drop. Some how I got it in my head that it was an EMH morning. We got there at 8 only to find out they didn't open until 9. DH was way too impatient to wait so we went over to MGM. After finally getting through security I noticed the American Idol auditions. After all the auditioning, I was placed in the 11am show. We got done around noon and boy oh boy was I starving! Since DH gave up his morning to watch DD so I could participate, he got first choice on lunch. Backlot Express it was.

DH ordered his usual, burger, plain with fries.

He gave me his usual "it's ok" line. I tried a few of the fries and they were delicious! Very crisp, but still had a good amount of potato inside. They also didn't taste like they were dripping with grease and had just the right amount of salt.

For my lunch, I have to thank MickeyNicki for this lunch. I had never seen Starring Rolls before and so never would have eaten here. For me, best lunch spot in MGM if you're looking for something non-greasy, hands down. I ordered the

Turkey Focaccia with chips

I apologize, I was so hungry that I dug right in before remembering to take a picture. Ok, first off, this was HUGE! I don't know how they fit all that turkey in there and not have it fall out. I was a little thrown off by how to eat it. I did initially attempt to eat it like a sandwich. That was very unsuccessful, lol. I finally gave in and grabbed a knife and fork. The bread was great, flavorful and dense. It had, in addition to the turkey, pesto, lettuce and thick, fresh mozzarella. OMG it was so good! I probably would have been just as happy eating the bread and cheese. The chips were also good, much better than traditional Lay's. Less greasy and more crispy, yum!

Ok, now get ready to drool. I was standing in a long line that wrapped around the dessert case. So, being the good dis-er I am, I snapped away.

I saw someone eating the Butterfinger cupcake and it was piled high with chocolate frosting, oh my!

After your final audition for American Idol, if they put you in the show, they hand you 3 fastpasses since they know you've just wasted a good portion of your day. So, since we had them, we decided to go take a break and come back later to use them. After a nice nap, it was off to DTD for dinner. DH, as always, thought WPE was too expensive, but eventually decided that we should eat there since that's the whole reason we came to DTD. If he'd just look at menus with me in the first place he could have saved us all that trouble :).

Aaaand, I have to go put DD to bed. I'll be back later to finish!

Ok, where was I? DTD. So last year we went to WPE Westside. None of us were impressed. It was ok, but didn't live up to the hype. The funny part is that we started on Marketplace and walked all the way over to Westside. We didn't even see the WPE on the Marketplace side!

So, after finding the correct one, I ordered

Chicken Pesto Focaccia - all natural rotisserie chicken, garlic-basil-pesto sauce, red onions, chopped Romaine and Roma tomatoes and Creamy Lemon Pesto. I got it without the tomatoes.

OMG this was soooooooo good! The bread was soft and flavorful. The chicken was tender and the pesto nicely coated every bite. I'm one of those people that likes their salad swimming in dressing and this fit the bill. If you only like a little dressing, this might be too much for you. The red onions gave it a nice oomph. I normally don't like raw red onions because they take over in whatever they are in, but these weren't overpowering at all; a nice compliment.

The chips were also great, the parm they had sprinkled on them really "kicked them up a notch." (is that phrase trademarked? :rotfl:)

There was a bit of confusion when I ordered this. It wasn't WPE's fault, but mine. I had assumed everything under that particular menu section was a pocket. I had seen some amazing looking pictures of them and that's what I wanted. I was wrong, but I'm glad I got this, it was very very good.

DH ordered a pepperoni pizza

5531_550962544923_44201769_32819763_4331221_n.jpg

He really liked it and cleaned his plate. It fulfilled his pizza craving since the rest of WDW pizza is terrible. The only problem he had with it was that it was a thin crust. We're from western NY where pizza is thick, like a loaf of bread under the toppings. But other than that it was really good according to the hubs. I didn't get a bite :confused3

I did have a problem with the staff though. The girls at the register were texting in favor of taking our order and talking to each other about their evening plans while taking our order. The waiter we had was great, very attentive. It wasn't a huge deal, but it rubbed me the wrong way. But I was in Disney so really, who cares? :) I shrugged it off and enjoyed the rest of my meal!

We walked around DTD a little more and were feeling like a little nosh so we headed to Ghiradelli. We went for

The Gold Rush - Peanut Butter Hot Fudge Sundae - Vanilla ice cream with hot fudge and melted peanut better throughout. Topped with whipped cream, roasted peanut halves, cherry and Ghirardelli Squares milk chocolate

5531_550962554903_44201769_32819765_3703849_n.jpg

It was ok. The ice cream wasn't anything special and the thing we were both most looking forward to, the peanut butter, was in very short supply.

We had planned on getting DD something at WPE, either mac & cheese or mashed potatoes. However, there were too many things in both and "exotic" cheeses like Gorgonzola. DH was afraid she wouldn't like it. I didn't think she'd have a problem. I think it was the fact that it was $4 that made DH want to skip it.

Don't worry though, she wasn't starving! She's still nursing, so food is all just practice for now. I didn't want anyone to think that we're bad parents and only feed her when we feel like it :).

At any rate, once we got back to POR we got her some plan mashed potatoes. She loved them! She ate over half the bowl!

Sorry, I just couldn't resist showing her off! :)

Well, I'm off for the night. Hopefully I'll be back tomorrow once I've uploaded more pics. Facebook has been giving me trouble with them.

teehee DD is cute.. and mashed potatoes are more yummy than mac n cheese anyways. Im with your DH i love burgers but its interesting seeing non burger options as DFiance gets burgered out quickly...

:rotfl: I think that pizza looks great! But then again, I'm a transplant...I can't find decent pizza (IMO) to save my life!

I'm loving your CS reviews. The sandwich at WPE looked good as did the pepperoni pizza (yummmm).

I'm also a Rochester NYer. I live in Greece and am 7 mins from the airport! DH and I are also taking this same jet blue flight in September and I was glad to see you give us a "time accounting" so we can plan out our arrival day a little better!

Your daughter is an absolute cutie! I'm glad you shared her mashed pototato eating pictures!

May I join the Emmeline fan club?:thumbsup2

Not only is your DD totally adorable, my best friend at Uni was called Emmeline! Great name!

Loving the reviews so far - that turkey foccacia looks delicious!

And my tummy is just rumbling at the pics of WPE!

As for the ice cream...:lovestruc

Shari xx

I had that same chicken pesto sandwich earlier this year. It was so good. One of my girls didn't like the mac & cheese at WPE and ended up splitting pizza with DH.

Your Emmeline is too cute! Great food reviews too!
And yes we have heard our Emaline's name butchered and then we pronounce it and get the look or better yet "Where did you come up with that one?":lmao:
