I received an email from Travelzoo yesterday. I clicked on it as we were looking at booking a trip to Universal in July for a few days. I am glad I did. We were getting ready to book a Universal Hotel when I found The Point Orlando for $217 a night for a 2 bedroom suite if we purchase our Universal Tickets also. We got 4 day park to park tickets for the price of 2 days with it and round trip mears transportation for $2100 (for 6 of us 2 adults & 4 teens) - 1/2 the price and 1 mile from Universal - walking distance with 4.5 stars out of 5 on Trip Advisor. Their transportation to parks is 40 minutes prior to open. I am so excited as I just booked it and airfare is free as I had 10 round trip tickets sitting waiting to be used by the end of August as we took a bounce from Airtran last year on the way home from Disney. My great deal for the day - had to share my excitement with someone other than my family and close friends who are going next month.

Have you gone to this hotel yet?

I'm seriously considering moving my booking from the Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando to this one. Primarily because I can guarantee a King bed suite with jacuzzi for $89/night if I book now. The other one is cheaper at $69/night but no guarantee of a King bed and no jacuzzi tub.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Hi, we just got back about an hour ago. The hotel is really nice. We had a 2 bedroom suite. One side had two king size beds with a regular bathroom with a mini kitchen. The other side had a king size bed with a huge shower and jetted tub which we didn't use. We fit 7 confortably. My 2 daughters and I shared the 1 king bed and the other two families shared the other 2 beds. There is a pull out couch also. I would recommend this hotel. They will be adding onto it in the near future. I really like the hotel. It is about 1 1/2 miles from Universal and it is a hike to walk it and you have to cross a major intersection - the walk lights didn't work half the time. We ended up taking a taxi for $6.00 to $8.00 one way - depending on hitting the lights, traffic, etc. I would stay there again. There is no restaurant but you can order at the pool bar. Food was good. Would eat there again. I also learned something else. It is cheaper to take a cab from the airport to this hotel then booking mears transportation. Especially with the # of people we had. We paid $30 round trip. If we took the cab, it would have cost us $35.00 one way for all 7 of us. Any questions please let me know. I hope this helps! Kelly

This is a great help, thank you for responding! I'm really glad to hear you liked it so much! The deal seems too good to be true (Fall special - we can get the King 1 Bed for the same price as a Studio) so I'm very happy to hear it's as nice as I think it is :)

How were the shuttles to/from Universal and Sea World? Did you take the trolley at all? Transportation is a huge concern as renting a car is out of the budget. We do want to be able to go out to eat/bars and figured we'd depend on the trolley or cabs to get around. Is there anything within walking distance to the hotel?

How were the pools/hot tub? I'm guessing everything was pretty clean and bug-free too..? ;)

Sorry for all the questions! There are way too many options out there, LOL

We didn't take the transportation they offered. We tried walking it to Universal one day. It is an o.k. walk - about 1 1/2 miles. It is just up from Wet'nWild. About 1/3 of the way is a Walgreens I think it was and a KFC. I noticed if you walk out the front of the building and go to the left and take the walkway, the next block is a TGI Fridays. Didn't notice that until it was too late. Trolly Service didn't use but saw it pass a few times. The umbrella for the pick up is down next to the next hotel (Best Western next door)- you will walk by it if heading towards Universal. I didn't like the fact that we had to cross a major intersection (Universal Drive & International Drive) and the walk way lights didn't work or they worked and the minute you steped off the curb, it was on count down and it is 8 lanes you need to cross. If you don't move that fast, you could have a problem. We ended up with Taxi service. The first night we were there, the very nice driver gave us a card with the # to call. We would call and within a few minutes, they were at our door to pick us up. It was between $6.00 and $8.00 for one way to Universal depending on lights and traffic and there were 7 of us. IT is just a very long walk down to Universal, then across the City Walk to the parks in 100 degree weather - including the awful humidity. We have been during the summer many times and never felt it like we did this year. Maybe because we didn't enjoy the parks as much as Disney. We didn't lke the times for the transportation to and from the parks with the hotel. We wanted to depend on no one - that is where the taxi came in. Much easier. I would take the taxi from the airport - much cheaper than Mears shuttle even though Mears runs the taxi. The Kids used the pool and didn't have any complaints, hot tub don't know about as it was way too hot to think about a hot tub. It was nice. The food at the bar was good. I did wish at times I had my own car so at night we could have went out on our own but with 7 of us it would have been a fortune to rent a van. They told us it would have been $25.00 one way for the taxi to downtown Disney from the hotel. I didn't see any issues with bugs, etc. Everything was well kept and clean. I hope this helps. Any other questions please let me know. I can say I really liked the hotel, only thing is check in is at 4 p.m. and not before. We were there about 1:30 and they couldn't ck us in - we had to wait so that screwed up our day on Monday as we wanted to head to the parks. Yes they will take your luggage and store it but we had to come back to ck in at 4 and we were not going to the parks just to ck back in as we had 6 p.m. ressies at Hard Rock. Oh I did see a Golden Corral out our bedroom window that looked like it wasn't too far and also an IHop. I would walk to either of those but again you need to cross that lovely intersection down the road or take the trolly. I noticed online you can get a 3 day pass I think it was for like $5.00 or something - I would do that before hand. They do have a map at the hotel for you to have with the routes. Sorry it is so long but I keep remembering stuff as I type.

Since this hotel is not an onsite Universal resort, I'm moving this thread to a more appropriate section.

Thanks again for the info, Kelly! I booked this last night (the $89/night rate) knowing I can cancel if something better comes along :cool2:

We are also debating renting a car to get around as I'm wary of all those shuttles/trolleys/taxis. Also because the hotel seems a bit far north from all the action on International Drive.

I did a review of this hotel a few years ago as well - if you search Point Orlando in this forum (it might be in the Resort Reviews section, but I don't think it is) you should find it.

It was really hard to find info on it when we stayed there a few years ago because it had just been renovated and rebranded. The Owner's Locker guys didn't know what it was and then said "oh, that was the XYZ resort".

We had a car and drove to Universal = 5 minutes to the parking lot.

I just found your review, thanks Vicki!

I'm actually glad to hear it was more of an adult/couples hotel than a family one, due to the nature of our trip ;)

I think I read somewhere that The Point were originally designed for condos/timeshares, but they converted to a hotel after the housing market went belly up. I'm guessing that explains the odd layout with the vestibule. :confused3

Yes, it seemed very time-sharey to me, which was fine. It was a great price to have a kitchen and washer/dryer in the room.
