Welcome y'all

Hellooooooo Disney friends! We've been back from Disney for about 12 hours and I am so excited to write this TR and share it with y'all!

What's with the title? Well, I got engaged during this trip! In front of the Haunted Mansion!

:cloud9:

Sooo...welcome, welcome, welcome to my November 2021 Walt Disney World Trip Report!

First things first

I'm Shanna and I'll be your ghost host for this trip report. I'm a thirty-something mama to two wonderful munchkins. I'm an HR director for a growing robotics engineering company. I was born and raised in rural Alabama and now call Baltimore, Maryland home.

The Disney obsession found me later in life, but I've loved every moment since then. Growing up, we did not go to Disney, though I went to Universal Studios Orlando when I was 15. I took my children in February 2019 and instantly fell in love the the most magical place on earth and that love has deepened over time.

621440
(I don't have any recent Disney pictures of just myself..)

Mitch is the bearded, handsome man in our life. He's a thirty-something Butcher and has lived in Maryland the majority of his life. This trip was his first time going to any Disney park and I think that he fell in love with it as quickly as I did.

621442

Dillon (12) is my sweet, kind, and athletic kid, who is dedicated to his Travel Baseball Team and plays basketball in the offseason.

621444

Delaney (9) is my loving, kind, Disney Villain of a daughter with a heart of gold and some mischief under her sleeve. She plays soccer and is interested in branching out into something new like karate.

621445

Oh and one thing we love as much as Disney is Halloween:

621446

What is our favorite park?
Dillon: Hollywood Studios, Delaney: Hollywood Studios or Epcot, Mitch: Epcot, Me: Epcot
What is our favorite ride?
Dillon: Space Mountain, Delaney: Expedition Everest, Mitch: BTMRR, Me: Space Mountain
What is our favorite restaurant?
Dillon: Chef Mickey's, Delaney: CRT, Mitch and myself: Ohana
What is our favorite snack?
Dillon: unsure, Delaney: Popcorn or cotton candy, Mitch: unsure, Me: Churros or the cheeseburger spring rolls

Mitch is very specific in making sure that everyone knows that his favorite ride is BTMRR, but his favorite attraction is RotR. I think that the same can be said by all of us. It was a life-changing experience. He and I both teared up a little bit.

Where:
AoA Resort - Finding Nemo Family Suites

Arrival Day and Disney Springs (part 1)

After about a year of planning, our Disney day was finally here. Despite having multiple alarms set for 3:00am, I naturally woke up around 2:30am and moseyed around the house until it was time to wake everyone else up.

We were scheduled to fly out of BWI at 6:25am and our flight was still 'on time' for departure.

It was a breeze waking up the kids, thanks to their own excitement for Disney, and we were out of the house right on schedule - 3:45am.

We made it to long-term parking at BWI with a few bumps in the road; I've only ever Ubered to the airport, so I wasn't 100% sure exactly where the long term parking lots were and I am glad I added a small window of time as a buffer because we had to turn around 2-3 times. The timing was perfect, however, because as we were walking up to the long-term parking lot bus stop, a bus arrived and we did not have to wait out in the cold!

We got checked in at the airport, made it through security, and sat down to a nice little breakfast at Chick-fil-a before heading to our gate.

With our tummies full, we made the walk to our gate, but not without stopping at a Starbucks for some cold brew to get me through the morning. I usually avoid the Starbucks at the airport because the line is always crazy, but I KNEW that I needed a caffeine fix and I am glad that I did because the line for Dunkin (a bit further down) was INSANE.

We had just enough time for me to finish my coffee and relax a little before it was time to board.

621454

I started developing anxiety with flying a couple of years ago - I was traveling a lot for work and had a few rough flights and something that I used to love is now anxiety city for me. Fortunately, it was a beautiful and smooth flight to Orlando and the flight attendants were hilarious.

621455

Delaney and I listened to music and I also tried to urge her to get some rest. I think that she dozed off at a certain point, but it wasn't for very long.

We landed at MCO right on time - 8:45am.

We hopped on the mock-monorail, claimed our baggage, and made the trek to Disney's Magical Express. I got all choked up seeing Disney's 50th Anniversary touches throughout the airport. We were finally here and on Disney time!

We were on the escalator to DME when I got the 'room is ready' text from AoA!

It's seriously such a hike to DME - even moreso when you're hauling your own luggage. On the positive side, there was no line and were on a bus to Disney's Art of Animation resort within about 15 minutes of getting to DME.

621468

I teared up more times than I care to admit on DME, particularly when going under the Disney arch onto property.

This was my first time staying at Disney's Art of Animation Resort, we were booked in the Finding Nemo Family Suites. We were off of the Magical Express (RIP) and headed straight to our room in building 5, walking through the lobby which was beautiful and smelled heavenly.

Using our magic bands, we let ourselves into our suite and spent a short while putting our stuff away, unpacking, and getting organized before heading to Disney Springs.

Arrival Day & Disney Springs (part 2)

With our belongings packed away for the time being, we decided that it was time to head to Disney Springs!

We walked up to the bus stop at AoA and waited for a Disney Springs bus. I absolutely loved where our room was located - we were close to EVERYTHING and it made going back and forth so convenient!

With less than 30 minutes of waiting + transit time, we were at Disney Springs - we had lunch reservations at Homecomin'!

With some time to kill before that, we poked in and out of a few shops, grabbed a churro, and enjoyed the weather - it was such a beautiful, mild, breezy day in Florida!

621770

We also seized this opportunity to pop into Gideon's Bakehouse - a moment 12 months in the making.

Gideon's was not offering a virtual queue at that time because the line was fairly short. I think we waited about 25 minutes before being let into Gideon's and it did NOT disappoint!

621771

It was hard to make a selection of goodies, but we walked away with a peanut butter crunch cookie for Mitch, a chocolate chip cookie for myself, and two slices of the cookies & cream cake for Dillon and Delaney.

I also bought a sticker and a candle, rounding out the total to about $65 altogether.

621772621773621774

We didn't enjoy the baked goods just yet - it was finally time to check into Chef Art Smith's Homecomin!

We got all checked in and waited a short bit for our table, but it came with a view:

621776

We opted for seating outside; when leaving Maryland earlier that morning, the airport had to de-ice the plane (yes, it was THAT cold!) and the weather could not have been lovelier in Florida - so, we were happy to sit outside.

Our server at Homecomin' was great and we started off with a bunch of puppies (the hushpuppies) with came with pimento cheese and jalapeño jelly. They were fantastic and between the four of us, disappeared really fast. I LOVE hushpuppies and these were some of the best that this southern girl has had.

Mitch and I enjoyed a cocktail each, I ordered the Florida Crush and he enjoyed the Blue Hooch moonshine drink. They were really good and Mitch said that his drink would get someone drunk way fast.

I didn't get pictures of all of our meals because everyone else dug in before I could snag a picture! This would quickly become a 'thing' in our family during this trip, but I got a picture of mine..at least :)

621778

I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich with a side of mac and cheese.

The chicken sandwich was heavenly. Everything about it from the toasted bun to bread and butter pickles was absolute perfection. To be perfectly honest, I had high hopes for the mac and cheese, since it has a cult-following, and was disappointed. It was actually pretty dry. The mac and cheese that came with Delaney's kid's meal was creamer than the serving I had.

Aside from my meal, Mitch ordered the Cuban sandwich with house-made chips and he liked it; I tried a bite, too, and thought it was really good. Dillon enjoyed the Art burger with french fries and he loved it, and Delaney actually *almost* finished her kids meal, citing that her cheeseburger was really good.

Before leaving the Springs, we popped into World of Disney and look around and then headed back to the busses. It was time to sit by the Big Blue Pool!

621781

The kids enjoyed swimming for a couple of hours and I enjoyed the pool for a little while too, but Mitch and I enjoyed a few rounds of drinks from the Drop Off pool bar.

We had a Pina Colava and Magical Beacon cocktail and they were both seriously so good - I don't even care for blended drinks all that much, but man, that Pina Colava really hit the spot.

621782621783

After wrapping up at the pool, we made our way back to the room for some quiet time, ordered a pizza from Landscape of Flavors (it was actually pretty good!), Delaney ate her Gideon's cake (which she loved, but said it had too much frosting), and called it an early night since we had been up as early at 2:30am that day and we had rope drop plans at Magic Kingdom the next day!

Congrats!! So excited to read your report.

Joining in! Sounds like a perfect first day! The weather looks beautiful as well!

It's Magic Kingdom Day! (part 1)

Oh what a Thursday this would turn out to be.

I tried to take detailed notes, referencing times, but failed to do so. We got a later start to MK than what I wanted, but we were at the AoA bus stop by 7:45am, but not without grabbing some pictures first.

621846621847
BTW - I made all of our shirts

We did not have to wait very long for a bus to MK and before I knew it, we were walking down Main Street U.S.A. It was yet another beautiful day in Florida!

621849

The sights and the smells of Main Street instantly made me teary-eyed and we paused for a stop with a PhotoPass Cast Member in front of Cinderella's castle (and witnessed a proposal)

621860

We hustled our way to Tomorrowland and got in line for Space Mountain. The posted stand-by wait time was 20 minutes and I would say that we waited about 15-ish minutes - it was fairly accurate. Delaney was so nervous to ride this one, despite riding it back in 2019 when she was 6 years old! She screamed the whole time.

From Space Mountain, we walked right onto Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin (posted wait 5 minutes), then hopped on the Carousel of Progress (waited less than 5 minutes), and then walked right onto the People Mover.

621863

Our Lightning Lane for Haunted Mansion was coming up, but we decided to kill a little bit of time by heading into the Laugh Floor, which was a first for us and we LOVED it! I had not yet done this attraction before, so I did not know what to expect and the kids kept telling us that they were too old for it, but we stuck with it and the four of us had a great time. We'll have to do it again on future trips.

Before saying 'goodbye' to Tomorrowland, we grabbed a few pictures of ourselves with the purple wall.

621877621878621879

And with that..it was time to go to Liberty Square!

So..on our way to the Haunted Mansion, Mitch's demeanor noticeably changes and he started seeming distracted and asking a lot of logistical questions about the Haunted Mansion. My spidey senses did start to tingle a little bit, but I did not want to get my hopes up. With a few more minutes between us and our LL, I needed to take a potty break in the Tangled bathrooms, and Mitch stayed behind with the kids.

The story goes that Mitch pulled the ring out of the backpack, shows it to the kids and said "your mom is about to go on a ride of a lifetime" - he was planning to propose while on the ride inside of HM. The kids were all about it until we are heading into the stretching room in which Delaney grabs Mitch and whispers to him that she wants to see him propose.

Like the good man that he is - he did not propose on the ride at Delaney's request.

Mitch and I shared a Doombuggy while Dillon and Delaney rode together and Mitch was soooo quiet and honestly kind of sweaty the whole time. They say that hindsight is 20/20 and it all makes sense knowing what I know now.

The ride was over and as we were exiting the Doombuggy, my hand hit Mitch's leg and I felt the ring box in his shorts, so then I started freaking out internally and we all awkwardly walked into Momento Mori - I felt like I was having an out of body experience the whole time, but in the best way possible.

Delaney bought a Haunted Mansion key and I bought both a magnet and a pin and then we started to head to Columbia Harbor House for lunch.

It was then, in a sea of people, that Mitch tapped me on the shoulder, and as I turned around he was down on one knee and presented me with the ring that we picked out together a couple of months ago.

and then BOOM - our mobile lunch order was ready. Eveything happened so fast!

How's that for romance? lol.

As we were heading inside Columbia Harbor House, the cast member standing outside to greet us said "Did I just see what I think I saw?!" and we both said yes and he congratulated us. Within a few minutes after we were seated at our table, that same cast member brought out two of the Haunted Mansion shakes with donuts on top as a congratulatory surprise.

We stuffed ourselves silly with fish, shrimp, hushpuppies, and fries while texting/calling friends and family to share the good news. It's worth mentioning that I do not like fish, but I love the trio platter at CHH, which has fish. It's always so tasty!

With full tummies, we headed back to the Haunted Mansion for a couple of pictures.

621911

And I got a ring shot in front of the Tangled bathrooms

621913

The forum says I can't add any more pictures to this post, so stayed turned for Magic Kingdom day part 2!

Congratulations!! Love hearing about your DME experience that early in the AM, that's about when we will be boarding our bus trip!

It's Magic Kingdom Day! (part 2)

Thank you all so, so much for the congratulatory & kind comments following my last post! We're booking our venue today and setting a date! I can't wait to add little touches of Disney to our wedding.

:bride:

We last left off with the proposal and lunch at Columbia Harbor House..let's dive back in!

The parks started to get crazy crowded and we decided that it was time for mid-day break. After stopping at the Confectionary for cotton candy, like a pound of skittles, and celebration pins (Mitch's first Disney and Happily Ever After) we hopped a bus back to the resort for a couple of hours to relax & recharge. I ended up taking a nap nearly the whole time.

623775

We were ready to head back to the park in the early evening (with a change of clothes and ears!) and I had picked up a LL PP Flight for our arrival. We were walking under the train station just in time to catch the Mickey and Friends cavalcade (spoiler alert: it made me cry).

While walking down Main Street, Delaney decided that she NEEDED a Mickey balloon and having that thing became a full-time job for all of us. It was flying into people, getting tangled around her legs, and of course having to check it before getting onto rides and picking it up after rides.

We made our way back into Fantasyland, balloon child in tow, but not without stopping for a few pictures with a very golden Mickey and Minnie:

623754

We were ~5 minutes early for our LL at PPF and were not allowed to enter. This move was always successful under the old FP+ system, but not a big deal to us, we got out of line and spent 5 minutes taking selfies:

623757623758623759

We boarded Peter Pan's Flight for a quick flight in the stars (where I also picked up a LL for PoTC) - to me, this is such a classic ride and my kids just don't get "it" (maybe one day..) and then decided that since it was Mitch's first Disney, we absolutely had to hop onto It's a Small World!

The stand-by was posted at 25 minutes, but I don't think that we waited more than 10 minutes for the ride. The group behind us noticed Mitch's "first timer" button on his backpack and we had a lovely conversation with them. I love connecting with people at Disney so much, but it's funny how that doesn't carry over to real life, I'm a pretty quiet person. At Disney, I will talk to anyone endlessly about Disney and how much I love Disney. I have a whole other personality just for Disney - I don't even really know her...

:rotfl2:

Another thing about me is that I love boat rides at Disney - mostly the smell of them - which is probably weird, but I don't care. I do NOT enjoy constantly telling my kids to get their hands out of the water! While we were on IaSW, Mitch and the kids looked bored to tears, but I tried to entertain them by trying to guess what countries are being represented while on the ride.

We left Fantasyland and decided to hop in line for Splash Mountain since the stand-by wait was only 20 minutes. After standing in line for what felt like 20 minutes, we were informed by a Cast Member that the ride was down temporarily and that we could wait it out or try again later. Since it we had an upcoming LL for Pirates, we slowly made our way in that direction as the sun started to set (I love twilight at Disney, it's my favorite time of the day).

We got to PoTC right when our LL window opened, checked the balloon, and basically walked right onto PoTC. Funny story about this one - I was the only one that knew about the surprise drop on Pirates! On our last trip, Pirates was down for the majority of our MK day, so the kids never got to ride it (I rode on my trip later in the year), and hearing them yelp at the drop was hilarious. Mitch was amazed at how life-like some of the characters on PoTC are.

We shopped around in the gift shop after we finished the ride - Mitch bought a pirate flag, the kids bought a bag of gemstones, Dillon bought a leather bracelet, and Delaney got some gold coins.

With some time to kill before our dining reservation at Liberty Tree Tavern, we popped into the Enchanted Tiki Room - it's so silly, but the kids and I love it and often sing the song at home. I assume that families use this attraction as an opportunity to get off of their feet, which it's a good one.

After a nice break in the Tiki tiki tiki room, it was finally time to check into LTT and after a short wait, we were escorted to our table and promptly greeted by our server - who was fabulous.

I ordered a glass of red sangria along with dinner and it was so good that I decided that I needed another.

LTT is a favorite of ours and now it's a favorite of Mitch's too! We ordered extra servings of the mac and cheese at the kids' request, but honestly everything is so dang good. The salad, even as simple as it is, is one of my favorite salads at Disney - it's always crisp and fresh and the dressing is delicious. I always, always, always recommend Liberty Tree Tavern to people visiting Disney.

The green beans, pot roast, and stuffing were extra delicious that night. We were so full after dinner that we barely made a dent in dessert, but of course, enjoyed the couple of bites that we had.

623764

As much of a Type-A and organized planned that I am, admittedly, I timed dinner very poorly because we were eating during the fireworks and missed them - bummer! At least we have an excuse to come back --- or something like that. ;)

As we were finishing dinner, I saw on MDE that Splash Mountain had a really small wait, so we made our way onto Splash Mountain and basically walked right onto it. Splash Mountain is a favorite of ours, plus the quick view of the castle is unbeatable. During the ride, Mitch and Delaney got SOAKED - thank goodness it was basically the end of the night.

We had one final task..

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

BTMRR boasted a 15 minute wait and we hopped in line and found that the posted wait time was accurate, but totally worth it for the wildest ride in the west! Behind us in line was a local couple, who also happened to be a TA, and we had some great conversation about Genie and how we felt about it.

Dillon and I rode together and Mitch and Delaney rode behind us in the last row and she screamed the whole time. The only thing that I could hear above her screaming? Mitch dying of laughter. Dillon and I kept our arms high up in the air and were cracking up over those two goofballs behind us.Mitch very quickly declared BTMRR his favorite ride.

The park was now officially closed, but I knew that the bus stop would be a madhouse, so I told everyone to let's take our time, take some pictures, and not make a big rush anywhere.

623768623769623770

Those faces - pure joy!

Unfortunately, we had only one day at Magic Kingdom on this trip, but I think we made great use of it! This was my first time seeing Magic Kingdom all decorated for Christmas and while I am more of a Halloween-person, I loved seeing Main Street decorated for Christmas. It makes me weepy.

623771

We made our way out of Magic Kingdom and while the buses were still crazy busy, it wasn't anything unbearable and we got lucky with a motor coach, which Delaney promptly fell asleep on.

Stay tuned - Epcot was on our radar!

With ponchos and raincoats in tow, to Epcot we will go!

623850623823

Oh man.

Our first Epcot Day was a miserable one. Well, as 'miserable' as a rainy day in Disney could be, which still is not even that bad all things considered. But hey, we had a spot for the virtual queue for Remy!

Before we get started with our first Epcot day..my theory has always been that rainy days at Disney are technically great days at Disney because the parks are not really crowded. Boy, was I wrong.

For this day in particular.

The misery started with arriving to the park via Skyliner, waiting 20+ minutes for rope drop, scanning into the park, and then realizing that I forgot my wallet.

Delaney and Mitch stayed behind and Dillon went with me as moral support back to the resort via Skyliner to grab my wallet. The silver lining to this mishap is that Delaney & Mitch walked around the WS, got a hot chocolate, bought a rock shaped like an egg (which Delaney named Sam and now Sam is part of our family), rode the Mexico ride, and explored Canada...all before Dillon and I got back. Dillon and I had nice 1:1 time together on the Skyliner and talked about life stuff - such a weird concept to have a pre-teen. Like who gave me this 12 year old?

Dillon and I made it back to the International Gateway entrance of Epcot via Skyliner and the other two were there to greet us. We grabbed our festival passports and made a beeline for Soarin' - one of our favorite rides. Let me tell you, by the time we made it from WS to The Land pavilion, Delaney was soaked to the bone. The rain was relentless. Apparently her Under Armour raincoat...is not a raincoat? She was freezing and soaked. Promising to fix the situation after we left The Land Pavilion, we took a beautiful ride on Soarin' after waiting in stand-by for about 20 minutes.

We quickly hustled over to LWTL, which is by far one of my favorite rides. It's SO peaceful. Serene. Calming. Boat ride smell. It's totally underrated and I encourage everyone to try it at least once. Delaney was falling apart by the minute, so we made a beeline for the exit and ran towards the gift shop near Spaceship Earth.

$50-ish bucks later, Delaney had a new sweatshirt and a Disney poncho - we were ready to move on with our day, soggy shoes and all. We had just a bit of time to kill before heading back towards France for Remy, so we got on Spaceship Earth. Braving the rain and the newly formed crowds in World Showcase, we eventually made it deep into Paris and got in line for Remy's Ratatouille Adventure.

Delaney was upset with me for some reason at this point and honestly I can not remember why, which is likely a good thing.

The queue was adorable and we had so much excitement built up to finally ride. I had not yet been on anything that uses the tractless technology at Disney and it was such a peaceful gliding feeling when we first took off from the boarding area. I purposefully tried to avoid watching too many YouTube videos on the ride because I wanted to be surprised and I am SO GLAD that I did. Suffice to say, RRA is phenomenal and sings to ALL of your senses. At one point, I remember getting teary eyed because of how amazing it was.

10/10 would pay IA$ to ride it again.

623828

But we did not, for it was time to eat!

As we exited the ride, the rain continued to pour buckets on Epcot, but we were determined to make the best of it.

We came to Epcot with an appetite and a goal to conquer Food & Wine.

We started off at Ireland, where we enjoyed the roasted Irish sausage with mashed potatoes, chocolate cake, and Mitch & I split a glass of the meade. Everything was delicious and we quickly gobbled everything up over a trash can in the rain. Even Delaney, who hates onions, loved the sausage dish.

Ah - Disney.

Moving from Ireland to Canada, we grabbed the Le Cellier filet and two servings of the bacon and cheese soup. This booth quickly became a festival for all of us!

Leaving Canada, I realized that the crowds and the rain was becoming too much for me and I was ready for our midday break. Had it been not crowded and raining or not raining and crowded, I could've coped better, but I hit a wall emotionally and wanted to leave for a while. We were all soaked and sliding around in our shoes and finding a wet trash can to eat food that was being rained on in a sea of people was my undoing.

I forced myself to suck it up for a little while longer, grabbing the Maple Boursin Cheesecake from Refreshment Port and the Lamb, Shrimp, and Pavlova from Australia.

The boys did not care for the cheesecake, but Delaney and I loved it. It's a festival favorite for me. We were all underwhelmed by the Australia booth - Mitch citing that the lamb dish had too many flavors going on.

623835623834
623833623832

I came clean to my family that mommy was ready for a break and they all willingly agreed with me and we made our way to the Skyliner to go back to the resort and start drying out our shoes with hairdryers.

Where I took, yet another...much needed....

nap.

Stay tuned for Epcot part 2!
