I've been reading other posters mention the old Norway restaurant (pre-princess meal) & how great it was.

Was it the same name? What was the menu like? When did it transform into the princess meal?

Thanks!

Same place only it was a Full Norwegian Buffet, seemed like more variety and you could sample alot of many dishes..The food quality was much better IMHO.

don't remember what the name of it was, but frankly...we thought it was very mediocre food and way overpriced back in the day. We were there around 2000 or 2001. The desserts were good (not particularly Norwegian dessert...my recollection was several choices, like they do now at most Disney restaurants. I know one of my kids ordered some special millenium celebration dessert that was elaborate.)

Akershus was one of the best and most interesting buffets on property...we have never returned since the princesses invaded (invaders!!!)

Was one of my favs. They had a Venison stew on the dinner menu that was de-lish!

DH and I would agree. We never found it to be crowded, either.

I did go back once for the Princess meal. But I used to visit Akershus at least once and sometimes 2-3 times per trip before the Princesses. I really miss the old buffet.

I agree, we also used to love it, and have not gone since it is a princess bill, they had the best smoked salmon, they actually had different kind of smoked fish, and other wonderful food.

We used to go there every trip before the Princesses arrived. My husband and his family are Norwegians and found the food to be fairly authentic but with some adjustments for American pallettes. I didn't like it quite as much as they did but always enjoyed the meal.

The original Akershus was much better than now. The true original had both cold and hot buffet sections with very interesting and different selections. It was a great place.

It started to decline when they went to a cold buffet with ordered entree. They tried to improve the crowds by adding the princesses but it simply isn't as good now and we haven't been back in years.

The old restauarant (which I believe was still called Akerhaus) was very good - we ate there back in 2000 - a little more uniquely Norwegian. However, exactly for that reason the place was ALWAYS empty. (Believe it or not, most people avoid trying anything unique and different while on vacation.) The Princess invasion turned it from a money loser to a money maker. I personally think the food is pretty darn good for dinner. We've been twice (2007 and 2009) and enjoyed our meal very much. Don't know about breakfast though.

DH and I went to Akershus in 2000 for the first time and loved it! The food was all you can eat and very good. We have avoided it since it became a character dining. However since having our DD, we decided to take her and give the restaurant another chance. Besides being a little more expensive due to the character aspect, the food is still good and all you can eat. They don't proactively advertise but you can still order more than one entree.

A guy at my husbands work suggested this place for a dinner on our honeymoon, he said the buffet food is amazing! Then my husband told him about all the changes and he was very disappointed to hear one of his favorite places were changed so much. I really wish I could have tried the old food! :sad2:
