We don't know...but I think they are the set up for next season's big conflict--the war between Widmore/Ben/Dharma???

The only way to stop the incident would be for Jack, Kate et al to figure out how to detonate the atom bomb within the next 6 hours becuase the incident occurs on that day. (clipped)

But I think the bomb IS the incident. I posted this before but seems I'm on everyone's ignore. Desmond and Kelvin, we quarantined IN the hatch due to radiation. I need to find back up but I swear at the beginning of season 2 there were radiation symbols, etc. They had haz-mat type suits when they went out. The 'outside' was the problem not the inside.

My guess, some sort of 3rd faction fighting for the island. Maybe present day actual Dharma.

I don't know much about bombs, but wouldn't the Jughead destroy the entire island? Or does the force of the electromagnetic thing under the Swan station somehow counteract the force of the bomb?

And when Kelvin went outside the Swan, he always wore a protective suit, but it turned out he really didn't need it. How long would radiation hang around at dangerous levels? Years? Decades? Centuries?

As for who the "new" folks are (Ilana et al), I also believe that they're present-day Dharma who found the island (or a way to get to the island) and they want to re-take it from the Others. Maybe there's actually a 4-way struggle for the island: Ben vs Widmore vs Others vs Dharma!

Either the bomb goes off or they use it for an excuse...either way whatever they do in the next 2 episodes will lead to the hatch and probably the Losties getting back to 2007...(I'm not ignoring you!)

I feel that way too. If someone immediately posts after you or if your post ends up at the bottom of the page sometimes it is overlooked.

I think the incident is Jack loses his shoe but can't go out to look for it because his little foot hurts. He has to ask not only Kate but Juliet and Sawyer to help him.

That is a great line...and it's so funny how just about every other reference she makes outside of Lost, I usually understand.

Charlotte and the others continued their lengthy trek to the Orchid, all the while experiencing increasingly frequent (and obviously more damaging) time flashes along the way. After another of these flashes, Charlotte collapsed, bleeding profusely from her nose. As Dan and the others tried to revive her she spoke rapidly in Korean, not making much sense. Then, in English, she told Jin that "she" must not return to the Island because "This place is death." While the others discussed what to do, Charlotte's consciousness seemed to slip between time, much like that of Minkowski and Desmond. She referenced many past experiences in her life, speaking in a childlike voice, i.e. "you know what my mum would say about me marrying an American". Unable to move by herself, Locke refused to allow anyone to help Daniel with carrying Charlotte the rest of the way. She urged a reluctant Dan to leave her behind and accompany the rest of the group to the Orchid, which he refused to do. Before the others left, they discussed how they would find the station if it was at a point in time when it had not been built yet and, in a rare moment of lucidity, Charlotte mysteriously told them "you will find it at the well". ("This Place Is Death")

A little while after the other survivors continued on to the Orchid and Charlotte's condition had dramatically worsened, she confessed to Dan that she remembered how she grew up on the Island as a child, and had left it with her mother at an early age. She also mentioned the DHARMA Initiative, having been on the Island while they were still functioning there. Despite her mother's assertion that she had merely invented the Island, Charlotte believed otherwise, and had been searching for it ever since, which is why she became a Cultural Anthropologist. She also confided to Dan that, as a child, a "crazy man" told her that she must leave the Island and never return, or she would die. Realizing that she was going to die on the island as a result of the repeated time jumps, she finally recognized that man as Dan, warning her from the future. After telling him this, she experienced one more moment of madness due to her repeated time jumps, saying she was "not allowed to eat chocolate before dinner", and then tragically died as Daniel comforted he​

The writers have deviated from the whatever happened, happened thingy because there is no way they will kill off the people they just said would be dead in 2007...no way...so the future is gonna change...

which makes the show a lot more interesting, especially for the rest of this season where I was sort of disappointed to feel like I knew everything...

Anyway...wanted to get this on here before anyone else stops by!!!

I need some time to let my subconscious absorb this whole episode.

harleyquinn - don't be so hasty. The Losties could theoretically die in the Incident like Richard said. Yes, the Incident happens in 1977, but it's their 2007 selves that went back in time, so they could die - we don't know what happens after 2007. Now of course if they're killed off, that doesn't leave much of a story line for next season, does it? I guess next season could be all about Locke as the new leader of the Others, but it'll kind of lose something without all the other Losties around.

Did you catch the previews for next week? It looks like Sawyer, Kate and Juliet somehow end up back on the island???

I'll be back tomorrow to discuss this some more; I need to let my brain stew on it over night.

Definitely alot to absorb during this episode. So Locke actually traveled to the future after his leg was shot during one of the many flashes....but what I do not get is why Locke needs to make sure the same events take place again and has to tell Richard what to do. There has got to be some significance here......All I know for sure is this....I have a huge headache after tonights show! Off to take some Advil!

Well, if Locke didn't tell Richard to go and dig the bullet out of his leg, then he would likely have bled to death on the island, and Locke knew he was supposed to die back in the "real world" while trying to get the Losties to come back to the island. Plus, by showing Richard that he knew what was going to happen, maybe Locke thought he would firmly establish his position as leader of the Others.

And you're right - there was an awful lot to absorb during this episode. I thought it was nice that Miles got to see his father "kicking" his mother off the island. Just like we thought when we saw that episode where a teenage Miles is asking his sick mother about his dad and she said that his dad didn't want them any more. Now Miles knows that being "mean" was the only way his dad could get him and his mom off the island.

Ok, as usual, I've got more questions after last night's episode.

So back in season 2 (or was it 3) when Ben took Locke to the cabin, Locke heard Jacob say "help me". And now Locke wants to kill Jacob?? Is Jacob stuck in some middle-world between living and dead and wants Locke to kill him so he'll go over to the other side? Or is Locke just playing mind games with Ben, the way Ben did with him for so long?

Jeez, I can't stand Kate any more. One week she tells Jack that she's always been on his side, and now she just walks away. I can understand that she doesn't want things to change - if they manage to change things and 815 doesn't crash, then she's headed to trial in LA. But all the people (Charlie, Boone, Shannon, even Nikki and Paolo) who died on the island......doesn't that mean anything to her?

I really don't think Ben's follow-the-leader is going to last, no matter how afraid he is of the smoke monster. He's going to see Locke's quest to kill Jacob as his path to try to regain leadership of the Others.
