The Official DIS Oscars LIVE Watch Party Thread! The Afterparty continues. . .

I did a google:
”…. resignation means that he will no longer be able to vote for the Oscars, but he can still be nominated, attend future ceremonies and keep his current Oscar that he won on Sunday.”
Yep, it's a whole bunch of nothing and all for show. The academy is probably voting and/or sending out confidential information about his punishment and needed him to resign for things to move forward.

On a personal note…

For the past years I’ve seen Will on various YouTube videos being very positive and motivational, and he seemed to have a great head on his shoulders. The Oscars moment seems counter to much of what he preached, apart from being really disappointing. I guess he’ll come back from this eventually, but he has much work to do.
It's a sham though. He's not really what he acts like on talk shows.

He’s lost loads of credibility either way. I recall that Dwayne Johnson does some speaking with sports teams and other high-paying organizations, and he mentioned that Will does the same. I don’t see Will being high in demand now,

I didn’t see anything about this affecting his SAG membership or his being able to continue acting. Was this just speculation or did I miss something?

The SAG membership part is speculation. The various unions being furious at the Academy for leaving an unsafe situation in place is real.

Someone dug up a real old video where Will was teaching kids, saying use your words, not your fists, something like that. :sad2:

Meanwhile Chris Rock was spotted going to the movies by himself on Thursday, ordering a hotdog and some popcorn and going into the theater for some peace and quiet. I know he's a rich dude with everything but I still feel sorry for him.

::yes:: The joke is, he didn't go see King Richard. Probably not Coda either, with all the waving hands. :scared:

Also, during his show last night, there were a few fans trying to show support to him by chanting, "Eff Will Smith!" over and over. He told them to stop it. Don't go there. That's not what he wants. When they wouldn't stop, the fans were escorted out.

Chris is STILL acting classy when he could have let his fans speak on his behalf on dissing Will.

Ugh. I love Will Smith. He made a terrible choice and hurt lots of people in one out of control episode. I’m glad there will be consequences, and I hope we all come away from this in a better place where
1. He never resorts to violence again,
2. Jada never relishes in violence again (looking at her smiling after the smack was gross)
3. Chris Rock gets restitution
4. The rest of us mind our own ps and qs in our own personal struggles as we navigate the chaos.

I want to see WS again at his new best.

next steps for Will, divorce jada (finally) I’m sure she’s all for the “open” marriage , telling Will “if you divorce me I’ll take you to the cleaners”. So now , with his career tanking, he can run, run fast! And get his two messed-up kids the socio/emotional help they desperately need.

Does anyone know what, if any, implications there are when someone quits the Academy? Is he still allowed to act?

Ok, I’ve only heard of Academy members being those that could vote.( I remember because Sean Astin was a member and discussed seeing some contention between Academy members about Django Unchained.)

My cousin works in films and is member of the crafts union. I asked her about the Academy as films she has worked on have been Oscar nominated (when production designers and set decorators thank their teams that is where she would fit in). She said there are thousands of members, and she thought if you win you are automatically invited to join and that being nominated often leads to being invited. And it really is just about being able to vote for the Oscars. It does not relate the actual unions at all. So, just PR and will not affect his ability to work or any of his future films to be nominated for Oscars.

If you watch a film she has worked in with her, she likes to make little comments like "See how those pills have fallen out of the bottle and landed on the floor - I did that".

The Rock is hosting Wrestlemania this weekend.

I guess this might be the only time WS has been caught on camera with this behavior. We saw his family’s reaction. The were laughing at him hitting CR and saying this is how we do it. Big stars get away with a lot and likely in Smith’s case too.

In the long run I don't think professionally this will make a big difference for WS. He may lay low for a bit.. or not. but ultimately he brings in $$$ and that is what Hollywood often seems to care about.
Even if he never did work again (which is doubtful), it's not like he and his family will be hitting up food banks and soup kitchens to live.
Boy these peoples lives are screwed up. I just can't feel sorry for him.

Yeah. I have to agree. Just a blip for him. It will be business as usual soon enough.

Well, this was the only thing Will could do. Retreat, apologize, go into therapy and reflect. Any other decision would have been worse.

Yup, this is what he needed to do. The whole thing is just sad...depressing. The news in general is pretty awful these days, so having something this sort of shocking happen at the Oscars was just a shame. The goods news for Will is that he certainly has enough money to sort of disappear for awhile. His wife and kids...not sure that's going to happen anytime soon.
