Tinkaroo - the only current rehab that DD and I have really loved was the CR. But, as she pointed out, we HATED the old decor, so they had nowhere to go but up! ;)

BrianD - I'm not a fan of the new desks, either, but I know many people bring their laptops and probably love them.

I am laughing at my original post saying to add me to the list of those who like the new room.... I guess I am the only one who likes it! :rotfl:

We haven't stayed there since 1997 so I never saw, in person, the rooms that they are redoing now, but in pictures they seemed way too busy for my taste. I like that it is a little softer tones (and I am sure DH will like it better too!).
I am not thrilled with the lack of drawer space, but I pretty much hang everything in the closet (with my trusty stash of dry cleaning hangers!) and leave the drawers for undergarments and socks anyway.
I don't care if the minibar is there or not, but I hope the fridge is always there instead of having to request one. There have been some terrific questions asked on the thread that was linked in here and can't wait for the OP to come back and answer them all! :goodvibes

I like the rehab. I guess I had no idea what to expect but I'm surprised they went back to the more muted colors from 2 rehabs ago. I'm glad they added in some more vibrant colors, the taupes and creams of the old rooms were just way to Blah for me! I do think it looks elegant - I am excited to see it in person and then really be able to have an opinion on it! :)

And welcome back Channing and Kelly!

:lmao: Don't worry, you'll probably soon be in the majority, as most people seem to love a re-do no matter what the changes. I don't hate it, I was just hoping for something with a little more "oomph". Something that would make me say "wow, now this is luxury!"

It will be fun to watch as more pictures trickle in and see if the rooms are all the same or themed again. :goodvibes

And I don't remember if I said it before, but Welcome Home Channing and Kelly!! We want pictures!!

Hi...

Yes, another newbie here... We never thought we woudl get to Disny but we decided to go for it and to cut corners int he rest of life and gfo for it somewhat nicely...

So we are planning to stay at GF for 5nights the mid of Sept to celebrate my B/G Twins 4th B'day. Now I have some specific questions regarding the rooms and what I should try to request. We have a resv for a Garden View room (couldnt scrimp anymore for a better view)...

1. Ok.. I have some limited mobility with a bad back and requested something close to the monorail... Is this a wise choice? What building do you think this would be? Is it better to request a recent Rehab building... something closer to the pool/beach area? Help.... yes I am confused?

2. I requested a King with a sofa bed for my twins to sleep on... Is it better to get 2queens and daybed? What exactly is a daybed?

3. Requested a refrig... anything else?

3. I want to get a B'day cake from GF Bakery for B'day surprise.. do they only send it to them room? Can they send it to CRT (we have dinner ADP there for the night of their B'day?) Is there someplace else special to do this?

4. What is an absolute must do when staying at the GF?

ANy and all thoughts suggestions welcome... I am trying to make this a WOW trip for all four of us. (Any romantic tips ideas tooo please)

Thanks!

Michelle, thanks for the link to the pictures.:thumbsup2

OK....I like the old rooms better. I don't care for the peachy blue and green color combo at all and the new wallpaper doesn't do it for me. I find it kind of blah and then again all over the place at the same time....I was hoping for some richer tones. Oh well. I had higher hopes, lol.

Does anybody know if the new rooms still have a minibar at least??

lives4disney :)

That's what I was thinking, too. There are some themes that I just love now (Cameo, and the Alice), but then the "Floral" and the "Swan/Toad" doesn't do it for me. Maybe one of the other themes will have more color to it (specifically maybe some pinks or reds).

And I agree about the table, and lost drawer space, too! Hmm, I'm just not dazzled like I was expecting to be. I thought the overall look (although functionality is another story) of the CR and Poly rehabs were a VAST improvement over their old. GF's from my perspective - not so much.

I'm beginning to hope RPC isn't touched this year! ;)

No one should apologize for their opinion -- it's interesting to hear different reactions, though I realize that there are posters that it's their way or the highway...

Having said that, I agree with you ladies! I'm really disappointed by the lost drawer space, as we always unpack. While I do bring my laptop, that desk still looks so small -- I loved having the table and two chairs. It may be one of those things that in person, and after a stay, I might like it more than I think I will. It's still the GF, afterall!

Yes, where will the tablecloth go for room service meals? And the little vase? Now one person can sit at the desk and another using the pullout table while sitting in the easy chair. I guess everyone else is on the daybed, beds or floor.:rotfl: So much for family meals.:confused3

k&a&c'smom, I must have missed the threads about the decor at the Polynesian and WL but I agree those of us who are fans of those resorts are pretty fanatical! But I don't understand why anyone would post on a board though without enjoying other's opinions.:sad2: I think this thread is fun today because we all have such different takes on the rehab.

Neversaynever, the closest building to the main one is Big Pine Key. It is also closest to both pools and the beach. How old are your twins. Even if they're small toddlers, the only way for them to sleep comfortable on te daybed would to have them at opposite ends. Personally I'd request the standard 2 Qs (and daybed). There are not many king rooms anyway from what others have posted.

Hopefully someone can help you with the cake. There is also a whole thread about cakes. My only expereince is with California Grill. A CM in Sugar Loaf connected me with the restaurant and I ordered a cake directly.

Happy planning.:cool1:

Next thing you know, they will be bringing in those TV trays from the 60's!!!!!!! :rotfl:
Does the GF host a lot of conventions? If not, I think the desk is a waste as well....

Is it me, or does the daybed look much bigger than before? I hope so, as I have a 14 year old son who has his name on it for this October! Otherwise we are ordering a rollaway and I don't really want that tripping me up all week ( and they are not the comfiest)!

Hi K&a&c's mom -- I only discoverd the disboards in May of this year, and it has been great conversing with people who like the Grand Floridian and Disney as much as I do :thumbsup2 .

We have loved the GF since opening in 1988, and continue to return regularly :goodvibes . My only dislike of the resort, is the topic at hand, the decor . I too want something that would make me say "Wow, now this is luxury" :cool1: . Even my hubby who loves the resort has mentioned to friends and family who decide to book the GF about the non-impressive room decor. Through the years of changes in decor, even the most recent, have left me wanting something different. In fact, on my very first visit, when entering the lobby, I felt some of the furnishings could have been a little more impressive. We have stayed in suites, as well as deluxe and standard rooms. The suite decor of course was impressive, but in a hotel such as the GF, I think the same type elegance should be expressed in all acommodation levels. Perhaps if I continue to visit another 19 years, some imagineer or decorator, will say "Humm  , it's time we upgrade the inside decor to reflect the grandeur of the outside". I understand the GF theme is to reflect victorian elegance, but from the pics I have seen of victorian elegance, room decor is lacking. The hidden characters, could be included in something more elegant, and I think the GF demands a more elegant decor. Perhaps, if Disney management has someone dedicated to reading these posts, the next renovation will give us something more elegant, with much more "oomph". I think the Contemporary renovations, were much more suited to the hotel's theme, and the CR really needed a face lift.

Of course, I realize there are other opinions out there, and some will feel I'm a little off for my opinons, but I respect everyone's view point. Disney is about choices, and my choice is to stay at the GF regardless of decor, because I love the hotel. Just wanted to add my little 2 cents on this topic.

May you all have many more happy GF visits!!!

No, not the only one. :goodvibes I like the rehab room better than the one we had last December...

That green/yellow on the walls was NOT appealing to me. :scared: It'll be interesting to see the different colors/themes in each building...

Hi, LewanC......Just to reply to your post a bit back.....I WAS booked for August, but originally (like back in March) I booked this first week in July and had all my ADRs etc booked including my air. When we went in May, I figured I could skip July (add the fact that 2 of my 3 kids didn't care to go! )I cancelled the room & flight, but kept my precious ADRs, haha. I had it in the back of my mind that I'd be going, lol. SO, I got really lucky and things came together, my 2 "dud" kids decided they DID want to go afterall, and we threw it together for July 1 -9. We stayed the first 3 nts at the GF in RPC WONDERFUL:wizard: as always, and then moved to the YC on July 4. We actually liked the YC a bit more this time than our last stay. Of course GF is the best, but YC is second in our opinion and we'd do it again. I totally prefer YC to BC. BC was overrun with rowdy wild kids in the lobby and public areas. YC is just so much more peaceful. Although DS16 REALLY only loves the CR. (he's one of my "duds" though so his opinion doesn't really matter at this point;) ) I just do not like the CR's pool area at all and can't see spending a summer trip there. He grew up going to the CR several weeks/year since he was 1 and that is where his heart is though. We used to vacation there in Jan Feb and March when it was too cool to swim anyway and we were park marathoners.

I know what the new decor reminds me of - More of an old lady's or a grandma's Victorian home. Kind of a mishmash of old items thrown together and the same old wallpaper that was there for 100 years. My piano teacher had a cute old Victorian home and this resembles it a lot. I really hope in person the room decor and colors are more impressive and vibrant. I want themes, too. That added to the charm. The flat screen TVs don't go with this even older style decor. Too bad they didn't hide the TV more. Like somebody else just said, it's still the Grand Floridian & we'll love it no matter what.;)

BCV....our drive home was MUCH better than the drive down. We had fun on the trip home. We did take 57 north thru IL. The only problem with that was the speed limit was 65 vs 70 everywhere else and IL was the ONLY state we saw state troopers. The interstate was crawling with them and they were out to get travellers and truckers. GA and KY and TN are so pretty and scenic. One of these days we need to stop and see Ruby Point and Lookout Mtn and the caves in KY :goodvibes . We have made that drive at least once or twice yearly from 1988 to 2001 and never stopped to see the sights. We've done it in ice storms, tornadoes, with strep throat, pink eye, flu, ear infections.....:rotfl: DH's parents live in Clearwater, my grandparents lived in Vero Beach and Disney was our reward after all the family visits. We all agreed, though, that it would be a few years before we attempt the drive again.:goodvibes

I will try and post pics tonight. Unfortunately, I need DH's assistance, haha. I am no techie. Everything was wonderful though. No complaints - except that weird check in mistake. If Dan and Mejay were there all would have gone well because they know what they're doing. Vonnie fixed it when she came - she and Joe are great, too. OH, and here's a shout out for the really nice M Mercantile CMs we met. So many wonderful people work at the Grand.

Channing :)

Thanks!

BCV23 already gave you good advice on which building to request. :thumbsup2 I'd likely also second the recommendation to go with the 2 queens (for that matter, I don't know if Disney would even put you in a room with a king bed if you have a party of 4, and they are very limited to begin with).

(Oh, and to answer your question, I really think of the current GF daybeds as a padded, upholstered bench with a back. They're probably not much more than 5'+ long, and aren't very deep. The new ones look like they might be more akin, when folded down, to a roll-away bed.)

If you want to have a cake delivered to a meal at CRT, you can call the new cake hotline's number, 407.827.2253, and cakes must be ordered at least 48 hours in advance. You can also order non-personalized 6-inch cakes at the podiums of most restaurants upon check-in. If you were going to have the cake at the resort, though, I'd still call GF Private Dining, as the bakery at GF does some magnificent things!

As for special things to do at the GF, I would say to take time to enjoy the resort - don't just rush around! Sit in the lobby and listen to the orchestra, do a meal at one of the restaurants, browse the shops, rent a Sea Raycer from the marina (or a pontoon boat), walk along the beach, look at the guide you receive upon check-in for the complimentary kids' activities going on (storytelling, coloring, games at the pool, etc.). Talk to the greeters out front, and the CM's you come into contact with. Take the resort launch between the MK and the GF at least once, to enjoy the resort from the water. Order a special treat from Private Dining to have delivered to your room as a surprise. Order a room service breakfast, and have it out on the balcony one morning. There's a lot to see and do, for sure! :thumbsup2

Have a great trip!

Does anyone know if Big Pine has been refurbed yet?

I don't think anyone really knows, but my guess would be no. Seems all the indications have been that the activity is currently at Conch Key and/or Sago Cay.

No, not the only one. :goodvibes I like the rehab room better than the one we had last December...

That green/yellow on the walls was NOT appealing to me. :scared: It'll be interesting to see the different colors/themes in each building...

I'm with you, Michelle - that is one of the decors I'm not a fan of either. :scared: I think that's the "floral" design, but I might be wrong. All I know is, that wallpaper has got to go!

LOL - I actually like the floral theme, but I will admit, it looks much nicer with the main building's plain yellow painted walls!

BCV23 - I may be remembering it as worse than it was, you know how negative things seem to stick in your mind. I think it has been a lot of fun discussing everyone's opinion of the rehab photos, too! I think my post-count from today is higher than for the whole year, lol.

NeverSayNever - I'm in a similar position, in that I have some limited mobility due to a pinned ankle and bone spurs. We've stayed in Big Pine Key and Conch Key, and both locations are good for different reasons. We love the location of Conch because it is near Narcoossee's, the boat dock (we like to return from the MK by boat), and you can go out the "back door" of the lobby to the marina or Gasparilla's. Big Pine is closer to the main building and the pools, as already mentioned. But, to be honest, I haven't had too much trouble making the walk from any of the buildings at the GF, it is pretty well laid out.

BTW - don't feel like you are "only in a garden view" at the GF! Their garden view rooms nearly all have beautiful views, we try to book them whenever we are not in RPC.

Lewanc - I agree - although I love the current decor of the GF, I was so hoping that (if it had to change!) it would be to a more luxurious look. We really love the lobby, though, my kids have a favorite sofa that they park on whenever I have to visit the desk or ladies room, etc. ;)

hey everyone
I have to say I like the old rooms to. :confused3
I really do yeah the TVs are way to small but it fits with the room.
I will go back thru tonight and then add my pics.

Yeah, we have a GV booked for Thanksgiving because RPC wasn't available for all 9 nts and I prefer GV to LV or "Theme Park View" anyway. I don't think it's worth the difference in price for the LV or maybe a castle view. The GF GVs are lovely. No parking lot or dumpster views at the GF. (If there is, I know I will get it ;) and I will post pictures and room number, haha)

They won't give you a king room with a family of 4. Max would be 3. Happy planning. The GF is wonderful. We chose to order the cake from GF bakery and have it delivered to our room vs. bday cake at a restaurant. I thought it worked out really nicely this way. We are always full from dinner and usually cannot fit in dessert and we didn't have to carry a cake box around the parks. We just stuck the left overs in our fridge. It was a 10 inch cake and JUST fit. The cake was all set up on the table w/ white table cloth and 5 place settings for us when we returned from the park for the evening. We had DD's bday lunch at CP because EEyore is her favorite. They decorated the table, had Eeyore give her a card and I did order one of the simple cakes there, but we were too full so took a pass on it. They sang happy bday, though and that was cute. Enjoy!:wizard:

Michelle, that room is pretty ugly.

Lives4Disney :)

I for one am not surprised by the look of the new rooms.
I had read that they were going to be similar but with more muted colors and that's exactly what they look like.
The new daybed seems pretty "regal" looking, but will probably be pretty comfy:cloud9:
I hate to be critical but the drawer space is crazy. Luckily I mostly travel solo with DD so it won't be a problem for us, but for a family of 5?? And looks as though they did away with the minibar?? That stinks! Although I think those things were more trouble for Disney than they were worth, so I'm not surprised...

The desk doesn't surprise me at all - everyone and their brother travels with a lap top these days:surfweb:

The Conch Key lobby rug reminds me of the main lobby decor~
I am eagerly awaiting news of whether they are doing all the rooms alike or having different themes...

I have changed my trip plans a bit but am keeping my RPC reservation. Can't wait!!

P.S. I always LOVED the Floral rooms in Boca Chica!!

Welcome home Lives4Disney and Alicnwondrln!
