Actually, the new thing around here is to turn from the lane opposite where you want to go. If you want to turn right, make the turn from the left lane - especially if someone is already in the right lane and waiting to go straight. Just go around them, it's perfectly fine. Or make your U-turn from the center straight-only lane. Don't worry about the people in the left-only lane.

Ijits, I tell ya.
