The Name of Disney's next ship will be.....

Isn't 687 just the ships equivalent to a serial number or VIN number?
If the name is not decided before they start planning work on the vessel in the yard, they have to call it something? I know other lines have called ships "Project Breakaway" for example.

We Christened a pilot boat that was named after one of my relatives. There were two Christened that day and both were named well in advance. There are also Liberty Ships named after two relatives of mine. The names were Also known well in advance, and the same can be said about aircraft carriers. How else would they get the relatives there? When they are Christened the name is already on the side and in the cases I have stated concerning my family, the names were in full view before the bottle hit. If it was indeed a maritime tradition, it has been abandoned, at least in the US.

There is a old story about how the Magic got her name. To name the classic vessel DCL asked for ideas and suggestions. Od Course some people suggested *Walt Disney*. DCL responded to everyone that the feel of naming the Vessel Walt Disney would not be quite right. Allegedly one lady came back and said if they didn't want to name the ship *Walt Disney* then name her after what Walt created...*MAGIC*.

That is cool, I had never heard that! All the ship's names thus far fit that criteria basically, so it would stand to reason they would continue.

Currently On board the Wonder and we have been told the next Disney ship will be " The Wish"

Missyp - not sure how many Cast Members you have asked, but I would hazard a guess this answer was delivered with a grin or a wink. It's a standard response to the question, as in 'you WISH you knew..." Kind of along the lines of the hidden meaning behind "Have a Disney Day!"

I just got off the Dream today and had the chance to talk with Capt Henry among others. At the moment there are no new ships planned. From a different perspective from Karl it takes roughly 5 years from the date he signs a letter of intent and as of this week it hasn't happened.

Basicaly as Capt Henry put it DCL is looking for certain conditions and when that happens well know. Personally I think the demand is there but the economic conditions arent. Also mentioned was the building of Disney Shanghai with the focus on that to conclusion. After that the focus will shift elswhere. Exactly where only Anaheim knows.

Tonka I have some other info I'll pm you with

Yes. The 687 and 688 for the Dream class are the ship hull numbers that a yard uses as a designation for a given build. In some cases a name may not be decided on initially and may come later after or during the contract signature. Also in some cases there may be a language barrier with a ships name or similarities (Disney Dream Carnival Dream as examples.) Put 2 ships in port or a yard with the same name and watch what happens.

I like the name S.S Walt Disney. I think it would be the M/V Walt Disney though in todays terms? Tonka's Skipper?

When the discussion for the the Magic class the names Walt and Roy came up it was decided that they didn't want to tie in a person's name on the off chance some thing bad happened such as poor performance etc. So they went wit non human names.

The gold coin is a old tradition. The coin would be placed on the keel and under the foot of the main mast to bring good lucky and voyages.. Today its the keel and a main vertical structural member of vessel.

Meyer Werft (builders of the Dream-class ships) places the coin on one of the blocks in the drydock just prior to the first block of the ship being lowered into position. Once the ship is completed and floated, they retrieve the coin and place it under the radar mast before it is stepped. Or so Captain Henry says...

SS is the designation for a steam ship. M/V is the designation for a motor vessel (like a diesel ship).

You can also have SS for Sailing vessel and a MS motor ship. FV for Fishing vessel and TS for Turbine Vessel. Add NS for nuclear vessel(merchant ) of which there is only one with that title, the SAVANNAH>

HMS for Her or His majesty's ship or His or hers (for their majesty's)mail Ship.
