The most famous person in the world

I guess that I never really heard him referred to as MJ. When I hear that, I automatically think of Michael Jordan. Maybe it's because I'm from the Chicago area. Back in his day, when we would travel and people would ask us where we were from, a lot of time their response would be "Do you know Michael Jordan?":rotfl:

I'm still having a hard time thinking that Michael Jackson is the most famous person in the world.

Just yesterday my DD was working at a local day camp. Many of the kids came in saying "Michael Jackson died". When she asked them who he was, most said that they didn't know. Some said that he used to play basketball and some said that he used to be a rapper. ;)

I'm sorry, but Annie Lennox? She's extremely talented, but as far as fame goes I don't think she's anywhere near the likes of Michael Jackson, Elvis, and Marilyn Monroe. And Kate Moss? Is she even still around?

Agreed.

I'de definitely have to say Barack Obama.

Other than his fancy duds, I wouldn't know the Pope if I passed 2 feet by him on the street. I couldn't even tell you his name.

People are still confusing fame with liking someone. As PP's have stated, fame has NOTHING to do with how popular someone is, or how much people like his music. It is how recognizable he is on a worldwide level. With that being the criteria, I think the most famous person in the world is VERY easily Michael Jackson. Even those of you are not MJ fans, you still know who he is. As does almost all of the world, even third world countries.

Michael Jackson, Elvis, Annie Lennox, and Marilyn Monroe are the most famous people that have ever lived, I'd say. Runners up would probably be Kate Moss, Walt Disney, and Angelina Jolie.

Living? That leaves Annie Lennox.

Annie Lenox? I like some of her music, but no, she wouldn't make the top 100 most famous people.

I don't think Kate Moss shold be on the list either.

I have to agree with this. I'm not really a fan of MJ but he definitely the most well known figure worldwide. I don't think there is anyone else except maybe Princess Di who has reached the fame level MJ has.

I disagree. Famous? Yes, but only to a particular age group. There are a lot of us who could care less about him other than that some of his music was okay. Perhaps he was better known for his many, many quirks.
Well my old biddy mil knows who he is and she only listens to Country and Christian music. Probably couldn't name a MJ song, but certainly knows who he is.

Living? That leaves Annie Lennox.
Is that your final answer?
Obama? Sorry, I just don't see it. In the US he's a huge celebrity, biggest for sure, but we're talking WORLD aren't we? Think of all the third world countries with a lack of communication, are they going to know about Obama? It's doubtful.
I'm fairly certain you're joking, but I'll respond anyway. They sure as hell don't know Annie Lennox either. Besides, weren't there people in small villages in Kenya celebrating his election. Hell, my 4yo knows who Obama is. When was the last time AL was on tv.

.

Most famous that EVER lived?

Geesh-wouldn't John F Kennedy. Martin Luther King, Teddy Roosevelt,
Michelangelo, Andy Warhol, Frank Lloyd Wright, ...and few hundred others rank above Annie Lennox:sad2:

I think Obama is probably the most famous person now. I guess I am just a little too young, but I didn't grow up with his music and don't really find his songs or voice particularly pleasant.

But when you heard the name Michael Jackson, did you know who he was?

I don't think there's anyone who is universally popular. I can't think of a single person who has more fans than detractors. But there are definitely people who are universally KNOWN.

And... if you take the United States out of the picture... the names on that list would probably be David Beckham and Ronaldo.

Is Elvis really worldwide famous?

Annie Lennox- uh no, not even close.

ETA - Now, you may criticize for Walt Disney being on runners up, but no one thinks Lennox without Annie. But, not that many know, of the top of their heads, WALT Disney. I'm thinking full name, actual person here. I know this is a Disney board, BUT from my experience when Non Disney fans (a good percentage of the population) think Disney, they would think maybe Mickey Mouse, Hannah Montana, Disney World, or the Cinderella Castle. NOT the actual person behind it all.

Kate Moss is still alive!!

Very interesting thread.

Since we are talking about world wide fame, let me add a different point of view here. Let me talk about it from the average Mexicans point of view (I know I'm not necessarily an expert, but living here for almost 10 years, I think I can give a pretty accurate view). Of all these names mentioned, how many would the average Mexican know.

Michael Jackson - definitely. Most Mexicans have heard of Micheal Jackson
Michael Jordan (the real MJ) - Yup, most Mexicans have heard of Michael Jordan
Elvis - Some of the younger generation won't know who he was, but I would still say that most have heard of him.
Farrah Fawcett - No. Some would probably recognize a picture of her, but the average Mexican would have no idea if you said her name.
Princess Di - Yeah, most would have heard of her.
Angelina Jolie - No. Many of the younger ones would, but the majority wouldn't recognize her name. (again seeing her in one of her movies would ring a bell for many, but not a lot of name recognition).
Marylin Monroe - Some of the older generation would, but hardly any of the younger generation.
Queen Elizabeth 2 - Yeah, I'm sure most have at least heard her name. If you showed a picture of her, with no name, I don't think most could say who she is, but they have heard the name.
The Pope - Even though Mexico is over 90% Catholic, I would guess that many still aren't very familiar with the new pope. They know OF the new Pope, but I don't think all that many actually know his name.
Pope John Paul 2 - Definitely. There are statues and other things honoring him all over the country.
Kate Moss - Not even close.
Oprah - I hate to tell all of her fans this, but I'd say only 1 in 1000 might have any idea of who she is.
Obama - Definitely
George Bush - Definitely
Bill Clinton - Definitely
Madonna - The majority probably do know her name
Prince Charles - Not overwhelmingly, but probably yes
Walt Disney - Like someone else said, the name Disney Yes, the man Walt, no
Ali - Not any more. Last generation yes, this generation no
Beckham - Majority yes
Shig. Miyamoto - Mario yes, the man behind him, no
Dali Lama - name recognition - yes. Photo - no
Bin Ladan - Majority - yes
Tom Cruise - No.
Annie Lennox - Not even a remote possibility. I don't even know who she is.
Philagoofy - Probably the most famous of all!!! :thumbsup2

I know Mexico hardly represents the entire world, but this is just what you would probably find here.

Update:
After talking to my wife, let me add a couple of corrections to my list. She says that most Mexicans do know the new Popes name. They don't care for him as much as they did for John Paul, but that they definitely know his name.
Most of her friends would also know who Oprah is she says. If they have Cable, then they've heard of Oprah (she's not a fan of Oprah, btw). I don't necessarily agree with her, but I'll adjust my 1 in 1000 assessment a bit)
She also says that a lot of Mexicans (more than I think) know of Tom Cruise. I don't know if I agree, but again, I'll add her opinion as well.
She also said "Who's Annie Lennox?"
As for the rest, she pretty much agrees with what I said.

I picked Tom Cruise b/c American movies go world wide. Of all our A list actors right now, he's been in the business the longest (as compared to Will Smith, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, etc).

I picked Beckham b/c soccer is huge all over the world, even in 3rd world countries like Africa. Beckham is less famous in US than the rest of the world, but since he moved here, more people have heard fo him.

Whoever said Annie Lennox must have been joking. :happytv:

.

And... if you take the United States out of the picture... the names on that list would probably be David Beckham and Ronaldo.

ITA. In the rest of the world some soccer figures would be more famous than MJ ever was

I'm going to take a different route here. When I think "most famous person in the world", I don't tend to think entertainer.

I would say....

Dead=Jesus Christ, Hitler, or possibly Confucious (since China makes up almost 20% of the world's population, in addition to his influence trickling down to other parts of Asia, Europe, and the US)

Alive=either the Dali Lama, Obama, or GW Bush

SHELTON123...Since I thought Annie Lennox was so ridiculous to be listed as one of the most famous people to have ever lived, I decided to do a little research of my own. I talked with 17 different people since last night and asked if they agreed? 16 people wanted to know who she was and the other insisted she was a porn star. These people ranged in ages from 14 to 83. I still say *ridiculous*!

GUESS WHO!!!! Even wearing her mask, everyone will recognize her because *she's one of the most famous people that ever lived*!!!!!

I have no doubt that MJ is the most famous person in the world.

Obama may be second, but MJ's influence goes more than 20 years back. He is known everywhere.

I agree with this. Esp seeing the footage of fans mouring all over the world. He has been so famous for so long, and known by several generations...heck, even my grandparents knew who he was and they died in the 80s.

I was one of the first to say that Annie Lennox was an odd choice as most famous person in the world.

However, I've been keeping up with this thread, and I must say that I am actually surprised at how many people do NOT know who she is :confused3. I figured that most people between maybe the ages of 30 and 50 who have spent most of their lives as pop/rock music listeners would know who she was.
