The most famous person in the world

I'm sorry, but Annie Lennox? She's extremely talented, but as far as fame goes I don't think she's anywhere near the likes of Michael Jackson, Elvis, and Marilyn Monroe. And Kate Moss? Is she even still around?

I would think it would be the Pope.

I think the most famous people in the world right now are (not in order):

1. Obama
2. The Pope
3. Madonna
4. David Beckham
5. Prince Charles, William, Harry and the Queen
6. Tom Cruise

Obama? Sorry, I just don't see it. In the US he's a huge celebrity, biggest for sure, but we're talking WORLD aren't we? Think of all the third world countries with a lack of communication, are they going to know about Obama? It's doubtful.

The Pope? Oh hell no, pun intended. I don't even know his name, and he's not all over the news, and he's done nothing that's really affected anyone, as far as I know. The FORMER Pope, John Paul II, I would consider, but this one? I don't think so. Think of the Middle East. Are they EVER going to put the Pope on television? I highly doubt it.

Annie Lennox, people question. Well, it's safe to say almost everyone in the world listens to music, right? And her music isn't something most people would oppose. It's not religious or political. She's pretty much legendary.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Muhammad Ali. I'm sure he's more famous around the world than Tom Cruise or David Beckham!

The third world people don't know Obama or the Pope, but they know Annie Lennox??

I do agree with you on one thing, though. Now that it has been pointed out, I do suspect that the Pope as a figurehead probably is the most famous. But as an individual personality, I don't know anything about this current guy, either. Most non-Catholics probably don't either. "The Pope" is kind of like "the president". It's like an office that many people will hold.

Michael Jackson
Barack Obama
Queen Elizabeth II
Oprah Winfrey
Bill Clinton
George W. Bush
Pope Benedict XVI
Muhammad Ali
Madonna

Yes, Shiggy, as his friends call him. I was going to say him, er her?

Definately. Say his name and anyone, anywhere, would know who you were talking about.

I'd say he was one of them, for sure. But I don't think there can be an absolute like that. There are several people who are known around the world. I think giving that title to just one person would be inacurate.

Sorry for another Michael Jackson thread but I was listening to Good Morning America this morning and Charlie Gibson kept saying that Michael Jackson is the most famous person in the world.

What do you think?

although I like Charlie, I think he was having a bad day today. By the time he got to the Evining News, he was talking about "...the Google..."

I know MJ was even more popular outside the US than he was here. He was certainly one of the most famous people in the world. Some reports are likening his death to Elvis and I guess I just never had that love for MJ or his music that many others had; so I don't get it.

They were both druggies with "unique" personal habits. Music had nothing to do with it.

Michael Jackson
Barack Obama
Queen Elizabeth II
Oprah Winfrey
Bill Clinton
George W. Bush
Pope Benedict XVI
Muhammad Ali
Madonna

what, the Dali Lama and bin Ladan are chopped liver?

Just curious - does everyone really think Muhammad Ali is still really all that famous outside of the US?

I think Obama is probably the most famous person now. I guess I am just a little too young, but I didn't grow up with his music and don't really find his songs or voice particularly pleasant.

I have no doubt that MJ is the most famous person in the world.

Obama may be second, but MJ's influence goes more than 20 years back. He is known everywhere.

Yes, Shiggy, as his friends call him. I was going to say him, er her?

:lmao:

Now you can make jokes now however if he died and they talk about Mario, Donkey Kong, etc....you will know what that is right?

The influence on video games from "Shiggy" will be legendary or as most of us call him Miyamoto.;)
