THE CAST:
MKFan-PR: Me, 34. Disney nut since my parents took me when I was 5. This is my 10th trip overall, number 6 with my DW and number 2 with my DD.
Carmen: DW, 38. Her 7th trip (6 with me). Knows a little English but enjoys Disney a lot.
Larissa: DD, 3.5. This is actually her 2nd trip, but this is the first that she will actually have memories of. Has been excited about the trip ever since she saw the vacation video.
We live in Puerto Rico, so a trip to Disney involves quite some planning and investment; it is very difficult to go more than once a year. With Larissa starting school this will be the first time that our family will NOT be going off-season, and who knows when we'll be able to return, so this trip is extra-special for my DW and me.
8/5: Day 5-Fun in the heat
We got up at 10:00, dressed up and headed to OPR for breakfast: Egg, Ham & Cheese croissant for me, French Toast for Carmen, and cereal and fruit for Larissa. Since today would be a slow day, we take it easy. After playing a little in the arcade and browsing through the shop, we decide to do some resort-hopping at the MK resorts. We get in the car and head to the Poly at about 1:00 PM. After going through the MK Toll Plaza, I missed the exit to the Resorts and have to turn around, and then I almost miss it again! (Carmen said: 'Honey, we'll do loops later in the Monorail! Now I want to actually get somewhere!'
)
The guard at the Poly gate informs us that we can park there only until 6:00 PM. We figure we'll be out before that. We enter the Poly and we are instantly reminded why it's one of our favorites. We actually stayed there in '95 (I even remember the room #: 2210), and I also remember the Luau I went to back in '75 when I was a kid. We'll try to stay there in another trip if we get a code. We love the MK and the MK resorts.
After strolling a round the resort, we board the Monorail with the intention of heading to the GF. When we arrive, Carmen and me think the same thing: 'Let's head to MK for lunch and maybe a couple rides!'. Being a Monday, we knew it would be insanely crowded, but since we would take it easy and do just a couple things, we'd be ok. After all, what are those UPH's for!
We arrive at the MK, pass security, enter, then take a couple pictures at the front. We then head to HM for FPs, since we couldn't do it together on Friday. After that, since the Parade was about to start, we parked in front of the Riverboat entrance. A few minutes before starting, Larissa wanted to fo to the restroom, so Carmen took her and I stayed guarding our spot. A few minutes later, the parade music started, and people started gathering around me. I worried that they wouldn't find me or be able to get through the maze of people. All this coupled with the insane heat made me move from my spot to wait for them. When they arrived, Carmen and I couldn't see very well, but I put Larissa on my shoulders and she was able to enjoy the parade. We saw the top of the floats. According to Larissa, the parade was great!
With the scorching heat, we decided to get lunch at Columbia Harbour House in the cool A/C. When we entered, the place was almost full, but I checked on the upper floor, and it was basically empty! We went upstairs and found the perfect spot: a nice corner, on a window, over the walkway between Fantasyland and Liberty Square, all to ourselves!
We had a nice, cool, relaxing lunch there. Carmen and Larissa had chicken strips, while I had the Clam Chowder in the Bread Bowl. Great, as usual! We always have at least one meal here. We love this place.
After that, we pondered what to do (what I love about vacation: wondering what to do next from many choicces). We decide to do the HM with our FPs (it was time), then stroll through Tom Sawyer Island. Sounds like a plan!
We enter the HM. Larissa was a bit nervous at first, but then gets in on the fun (she covers her eyes first, then she peeks through one, then she peeks through both while keeping her hands on her face, so now it looks like she's covering her nose!). When we exit, she gives it a thumbs up. We then board the rafts to Tom Sawyer Island. While Carmen relaxes in a rocking chair, Larissa and I explore the fort. She's scared at first of the gun sounds, but then she starts playing with them. She loved the Island! We take turns between the rocking chairs and playing with her.
We returned to the 'Mainland', and since it was so hot and it was close to 6:00PM (I didn't want to cause any trouble with the Poly parking) we headed to the Monorail back to the Poly. We returned to the hotel, where we decided that instead of goind to the room, we would park at the Boardwalk, then take the boat to MGM-St to try and catch Fantasmic. The boat ride was so nice. We arrive at the park at about 6:30 PM. We do 'Sounds Dangerous', then have dinner at Backlot Express (another favorite). We then head toward the theater, browsing a few shops along the way. When we get there... the show is full! Argh! We missed it again! We decide to stroll through some shops on our way out, then take the boat back to Boardwalk. The captain shows us the walkway from MGM-ST to the Swan/Dolphin. I didn't know that existed! You can actually walk from the Boardwalk to MGM-St! The captain said it takes about 30 min. Wow! I'd love to try it one day! (Carmen said she would try it only if I put HER in a stroller! LOL!)
We stroll around the boardwalk, share some soft drinks and consider renting a Surrey. But we decide to head back to our room, since we wanted to try (emphasis on try!
) to start early the next day. So we get to our car, and arrive at our room at about 9:15PM. I go to the Custom House to check on our charges, then we share some cupcakes from OPR, and go to bed. The missed Fantasmic notwithstanding, it was a nice, smooth day... just as we planned... or didn't plan
Tomorrow... we go outside to IOA!
