The Marvelous Mexican Riviera - 2/27-3/6 *Updated 3/13* added Day 3 and Day 4

We attended the 6:15 show, Welcome Aboard and Juggler Bronkar Lee, it was good but not great.
That's interesting. I was on the 2/20 MR cruise and I got the impression that Bronkar got on the ship in Cabo. We saw his first show at Diversions and then he was the closer the last night. He must have replaced either Heath Hyche or Smooth E.

My DS loves his cheese and one of his favorite things about cruising is to order a cheese plate every night for an appetizer. We sat down to Dinner and asked Vijay (our waiter from India who was fantastic) about a cheese plate. He said no problem it just may take a few minutes.
P1030184.jpg
Wow, I wish I would have known about the cheese appetizer. Our family loved ordering the All Hands on Deck from room service. Never occurred to me to ask at the dinner table.

hi- we were on this cruise too!!!! I saw my family in your Sail Away party pics.:goodvibes:

I'm working on my TR :surfweb:

Nice! keep it coming. Like the poster above I think we were in one of your pics as well. Pretty funny that we all cross but maybe never meet...or maybe we did and I just don't remember (i'm really, really bad with names!). We had Witt as our head server as well...I've not written about it in my trip report...but he was far and away the BEST head server we have ever had. Oh, well, he was the ONLY head server I've ever seen except on tip night :rotfl2:

Keep up the great work, your pictures are fun to see.

Great update.
Glad to hear you had great servers at dinner!

They were some of the best servers we have had on any cruise!

HA! Yes, we generally only see the head server on tip night. But not so with Witt. We saw him everywhere and he was always smiling and always stopped to visit with us. We really enjoyed meeting him.

It was a fun party even though it was a little chilly on deck! Hope you enjoyed your cruise as much as we did.

Thank you all for stopping by and checking out my report. Hopefully my internet will be more cooperative tomorrow and I can get more of it done.

We had previously decide that since we had late dining on this cruise, we would have a continental breakfast delivered early (DH and I are early risers) and let the kids sleep in. We put the card on the door the night before and coffee, chocolate milk, pastries, fruit, and donuts were delivered at about 7:15am. It was very nice to sit out on the verandah and have coffee in the morning. It was a bit chilly but the wind wasn’t bad on this side (starboard) of the ship. The kids woke about 8:30 and wanted to get to the kids club as soon as it opened. We dropped them off at kids club and DH and I went to get a little more breakfast at Triton’s. Breakfast was sufficient.

After breakfast we went to check on the kids. They were about to Do Si Do with Snow White and make Flubber so all was well there. DH and I decided to go watch Toy Story 3 in 3D at the Buena Vista Theater. The movie made me cry..again. We really enjoyed the theater. I wish we could have squeezed in a few more movies.

P1030188.jpg

After the movie, we went to collect the kids for lunch. We went to lunch at Triton’s and though it was just OK.

P1030186.jpg

Following lunch the kids wanted to go back to the kids club because Lilo and Stitch were supposed to show up. So we escorted them up and then DH and I found a quiet spot to read for a few hours (my DD is horrified that what I wanted to do most on my vacation was sit and read. I explained to her that she would understand this desire for quiet, uninterrupted reading time when she was older. She was dubious). We read until time for the Tequila and Margarita tasting. Tequila is my favorite liquor and margaritas are my favorite mixed drink, so I was looking forward to it!

The tasting was held in the Cadillac Lounge and was hosted by Romy (the bartender in CL). He was a fantastic bartender and the bar servers (Modesto from Dominican Republic and Michel from Peru) were fabulous as well. We found ourselves in the Cadillac Lounge many evenings after dinner. Anyway, back to the tasting. We had 3 shots of different Tequila (One blanco, one reposado, and one coffee flavored tequila) and 2 small margaritas (one classic, one passion fruit). It was a lot of fun and it confirmed what we already knew about buying tequila. We did meet a wonderful couple there (Bill and Lisa) who we struck up a friendship with.

P1030190.jpg

After the tasting, we went to see about the kids. They had just finished with the Ratatouille Cooking School and really enjoyed it. We went straight from there to the Golden Mickeys. This was a wonderful show. I loved being able to take my kids to the shows and not worry if they were going to be appropriate.

P1030195.jpg

This was formal night, so after the show we went back to the cabin to get dressed up. Then we went out to the Captains Welcome Reception. We had our picture taken with Captain Thord.
P1030201.jpg

We had a complimentary glass of wine and the kids had some very yummy fruit punch. And then we had a few other pictures taken. The line ups for pictures with the characters were super long so we skipped that. Then it was time for dinner in Tritons. The meal was good but again not great. I think I had the beef dish and my DH had the duck. The kids stuck to the kids menu tonight.

Mickey Bars and Silly Napkin Hats, a great way to finish dinner!

Immediately following dinner, DH was signed up for the congac tasting in Cove Café. Me and the kids had decided we wanted to go see Tangled in 3D. The movie was great and DH really enjoyed the cognac. The movie ended just after midnight so we were off to bed. It was a nice relaxing day at sea!

The tasting was held in the Cadillac Lounge and was hosted by Romy (the bartender in CL). He was a fantastic bartender and the bar servers (Modesto from Dominican Republic and Michel from Peru) were fabulous as well.

Did you know that it was only Modesto's second week? We were on the Wonder the week before you and met him on his second day on board. He's a great addition to DCL. :thumbsup2

Great trip report. Looking forward to reading more.

What a great trip report !!!

Did you incorporate any Home School lessons while on your trip?? We will be just starting Home Schooling our son at the time of his first cruise and I'm just trying to get ideas.

Thank you for checking out my trip report.
As far as home schooling, no, we didn't do any type of schoolwork while on board. We did do a lot of stuff prior to leaving such as geography. But I needed the vacation :) so no school during the trip!

Sounds like a great day!!

Looking forward to more...

Thank you so much for reading along.

Wow! I never would have guessed. Modesto was wonderful and is definitely a great addition. We really enjoyed getting to talk with him in the Cadillac Lounge each night.

What a nice day! I feel relaxed just reading about it!

It was very relaxing. Thanks for reading.

Great report! Subbing...

Thanks for checking out the report!

I forgot to add that on the morning of Day 2 I took the pillowcases and fabric markers down to guest services. They had a couple of slips to fill out. Actually, the CM filled them out, not me. They asked if there were any special instructions for them and I told them no princesses on the one for my son (he would be horrified!) but definitely princesses on the other one. So we will see how they turn out :)

Okay, I will warn you guys up front that this may be a tad on the boring side today. It is almost an exact repeat of yesterday and apparently I forgot about the camera hanging from my wrist because I only have 3 pictures from the entire day :confused3! I know, I know….it is tragic.

But here we go anyway. We had our room service delivered again about 7:15 (coffee, choc milk, donuts and fruit). It was all really good. This is actually the first time on any cruise that we have used room service, just never could find a reason to order on any other cruise. We really enjoyed the coffee in the morning and the kids enjoyed having breakfast in bed! We were out of the room by about 9am and ran down to Tritons so DH and I could have breakfast (the kids decided they could eat a little more as well). We generally order eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. One morning I had an omelet which was good. And one morning I ordered some kind of tower with French toast and pineapple. It was good, but very sweet. The kids stuck with Mickey waffles and pancakes.

After breakfast the kids were off to the kids club for Toy Story Boot Camp and we decided to go to the movies again. Today it was Prince of Persia. After the movie, we went to get the kids for lunch. We decided just to run up to the Beach Blanket Buffet on Deck 9. When we get out to the pool deck, who do we see, Captain Hook!! He is one character we have never run into before and the line was not long so we jump in. Just after we got in line, the CM said she was closing the line for Hook and starting a new one for Minnie. Of course, DD decided she really needed to say hi to Minnie so I sent DH to the back of the newly forming Minnie line (he was overjoyed).

I threw this Snow White pic in because I forgot to post it yesterday. We were walking towards the theater for Golden Mickeys and we happen upon Snow White. No line, no photographer so we ask if we can get a picture with her. Snow White is my daughter’s favorite (well until Rapunzel came along) so it was nice to get a pic with her.

P1030191.jpg

So back to today, after getting our character pics (and exacerbating DH’s Character Induced Stress) we get our lunch at BBB. I thought the buffet was pretty good. I liked that one side had kid friendly foods for my DS who is a picky eater.

After lunch, the kids went back to the club. They really wanted to swim but it was just too chilly on deck when the ship was in motion. We promised we would take them to the pools when we were in port. We went and found a quiet spot to read for just a few minutes because at 3 o’clock we have a martini tasting!

The martini tasting was held in Diversions and hosted by Jesus. We had five mini-martinis to try. They were all pretty sweet and it would have been nice to have one classic martini in the bunch but it was fun. We found out later that on the last day they had another martini tasting that was held in Cadillac Lounge and hosted by Romy. Had we known beforehand we would have booked that one instead.

P1030217.jpg

We had also booked the mixology class for 5 o’clock so we had about an hour inbetween. We decided to go sit in on the Hypnosis seminar. DH had been reading up on hypnosis (probably for one of his books) and wanted to check it out. It was interesting, and we looked forward to his performance in the show that evening.

Now time for the mixology class. It was held in Diversions and hosted again by Jesus. We were a bit disappointed by this class. We were hoping to learn to mix some more common cocktails. Instead, Jesus had just put out a bunch of ingredients, gave a few pointers and basically told us to “have at it”. We could just make up our own drinks for the hour. You could definitely get your $15 worth of drinks out of it this way, but not exactly what we had in mind. We did end up having a great time and we did meet Cynthia who we had a great time with each night in the Cadillac Lounge thereafter.

After having plenty to drink at mixology we stopped in to get the kids and went directly to the show. Tonights show was the hypnotist Ricky Kalmon. It was a lot of fun and the kids really enjoyed it having never witnessed anything like that before.

We then ran to get ready for dinner. Tonight dinner was in Triton’s again and was the French dinner. I can’t remember what we ate except for the escargot that DH and DD had and enjoyed.

After dinner, the kids wanted to go back to the club for a little while so we went to hang out at CL. This was our first encounter with Fred (the jazz pianist). We found him to be funny and quite talented and could play almost anything (think Phantom of the Opera all the way to Garth Brooks) you threw at him We really enjoyed interacting with him and Cynthia,, who we met at mixology was also there so we visited with her some more.

About 11:45 we got a text on the wave phone (those phones are extremely handy) that the kids club would be closing in 15 minutes. That was our cue so we picked up the kids and headed to bed. Another relaxing day behind us and really looking forward to the 3 port days ahead.

We woke up this morning and our room service was delivered again about 7:15. We stepped out on the verandah to get a lovely view of Puerto Vallarta.

P1030218.jpg

Okay, well maybe not so lovely, but hey, who can’t use a Wal-mart and Sam’s Club.

P1030222.jpg

We arrived in port sometime around 7am (I think). At that point it was cloudy and you could see some rain showers in the distance. Disappointing, but we weren’t planning on getting off the ship until about 10AM anyway so there was still time for the sun to come out. Our plan for the day was to take our time and eat some breakfast on board. Then we would get off the ship about 10am and go into town to do some shopping. The last time we were in Puerto Vallarta we spent the day at the Dreams resort, but this time we wanted to see some of town. Initially we had planned to leave the kids on board in the club (they really do not enjoy the walking and shopping). But that morning they both decided they wanted to see the town so they went with us. We ate breakfast at Parrot Cay buffet (it was good), then went and gathered our things and got off the ship under beautiful, blue, sunny skies. We grabbed a cab there at the marina and asked to go to the Malecon. It was $12 for all 4 of us. I know we could have found a cab for $10 if we walked outside the marina, but it was easier to just get one there. The cab dropped us off at the Hotel Rosita which is at the north end of the Malecon. We started out walking on the shop side of the street but quickly decided the boardwalk side would offer a much more peaceful walk and we could easily cross the street to any shop we wanted to enter. We walked a little ways and found a gentleman doing caricatures.

P1030231.jpg

We had him sketch both the kids together. It was 200 pesos.

I will mention here that we brought pesos with us. I made the exchange through our local bank. They gave us a decent exchange rate and I just estimated what I thought we would need. The bank would buy back any pesos left over at the end of the trip. It was nice to already have the pesos and not have to worry about exchanging them in Mexico.

We continued to walk and admire the artwork and sand sculptures along the way.

We wanted to buy some tequila so we stopped in one of the shops and did some sampling. We found the one we liked and the salesman made us a deal that if we bought 2 bottles he would give us one for free. So we purchased one bottle of anejo and two bottles reposado all for about $60. It is very good tequila ;). At this point we decided lunch was in order, we saw the Cheeky Monkey and decided to try it. DH and I each had a $1 margarita along with a shot of Don Julio Blanco tequila. The kids had a mango and strawberry smoothie. To eat we had chips and salsa, taco plate, cheese nachos, taco pizza, and meat lovers nachos. Everything was quite delicious and it all cost about 650 pesos.

P1030236.jpg

We really wanted to find the Mercado (market) on the southern end of the Malecon. We kept walking and saw the cathedral. We peeked in but didn’t enter because the kids were in their shorts. What we saw was beautiful.

We continued down one of the side streets and eventually came to the market. Here we found some of the items we were looking for as souvenirs and gifts for people at home :woohoo:. We enjoyed our shopping but we were tired so we found a cab and thanks to DH being fluent in Spanish we were able to communicate where we wanted to go. The ride back was $10 for all of us. We got back to the ship about 2:30 and there was a line to get back on the ship. Took about 10-15 minutes to get back on the ship. Not too bad.

Continued in next post...

We took all of our things to the room and then it was time to fulfill my promise to the kids. Time to hit the pool! We went to the Mickey pool for a little while. It was crowded but the kids didn’t seem to mind.

After a little while there they decided to move to the Goofy pool. The pools were heated and were very comfortable. We played there for a little bit then DH and I moved to the hot tub and the kids went to get a snack. We loved the chicken strips from Pluto’s Dog House. They also managed to sneak in some ice cream and soda. Then the kids joined us in the hot tub.

We played at the pool until about 4:45 (DH went in about 4:30 to get a head start on the shower). We all went back to the room to clean up for the show and dinner.

The show tonight was Toy Story the Musical. It was packed. I have to be perfectly honest here, I was a little bored by this show. The kids, however, thought it was the best show ever! I think it would have been better if it didn’t follow the first movie and told a new story. But that is just my opinion.
P1030260.jpg

P1030271.jpg

After the show, the kids wanted to go to the kids club until dinner. We dropped them off and we went to Wavebands for the Family Cabaret show. The show tonight was comedy/magic show by Levent. Apparently, he is brand new to the ship. This was his first show. He was great. Very funny. We were so sorry that we didn’t bring the kids with us to the show, they would have loved it. Next time we will try to catch more of both the family and adult cabaret shows.

Dinner time! Tonight’s dinner was our first in Animators Palate. Our waiter, Vijay, made sure the kids sat in the right places to get the best effect of the show. He also told my daughter (who had a tendency to skip dessert and run off to the club) she should stay put for the whole thing tonight. She was glad she did. I don’t have any idea what we ate for this meal. I know that it was one of the least impressive menus IMO. But we all found something to eat I am sure. Then close to the end of dinner the show started. It was great. And Sorcerer Mickey paid us a visit and came to stand right by the kids. They loved it!

The kids went back to the club after dinner. We went to the Cadillac Lounge to visit with Cynthia and try to find some request that Fred the pianist didn’t know ;). Once again we got the wave phone message that the kids club was closing in 15 minutes so we retrieved the kids and went to bed. It was a fantastic, fun-filled day!

subbing-

My DB would love to go on one of these... he definitely needs to de-stress!

Enjoying the review. What are the lanyards the kids are wearing? Is for a special tour or something?

We go in three weeks, so much to look forward to!
