The little beggar we found on our porch this morning

I thought my husband had left for work this morning. However, he came back in while I was still in the shower and had a little black puppy in his arms. We don't know if someone left it on our porch or if it just found its way there. It is really little and wobbly - just big enough to follow us around. We have 2 cats, and they were not pleased to smell a strange creature in the house and on my husband. I'm not a dog person so I don't know what kind of dog it is.

Of course this had to happen on one of the few days during the school year that I am substituting. Normally I can stay home. So we had to leave the little guy on our big front porch all alone. We made a little cardboard "house" and put out some cat food and water. He was so cute and even followed me to my car. I had to put him back on the porch through the railing so that I didn't have to fear running over him.

It's not very cold here in Texas now, or I wouldn't have known what to do. I don't know if he'll still be there when I get home or not. And I don't know what we'll do with him if he is there. I'll write again when I get home and let you know if he's still around. What do you do with stray animals if you don't want them to be put to sleep?

If you track down what type of dog he is, you can go online and find a rescue for that breed that will take him and place him into a pre-approved home. Rescues don't put dogs down. They help to find good homes for them.

I vote that you name him and make him a part of the family! :p

He could not have come from very far if he's so young. I'd walk around the neighborhood with him in my arms and chat with people who are out. Someone may know where he may have wandered away from. Of course, I'm assuming you live in a neighborhood rather than a more rural location.

Good luck finding him a home - I'm hoping he just wandered away and someone is frantically looking for him.

I can't believe that I didn't think of this first. Either take out a "found" ad in the paper or watch for a "lost" ad.

Good idea looking for the owner - I'll try that. We are in the city, but we don't have a lot of neighbors because our property is surrounded by the campus and property of a graduate school. I hope he isn't a Christmas present that someone just got tired of. If we don't find the owner, we'll try to get one of our friends to take him. He may not even be at our house anymore. I don't really want to keep him because of our cats, but I'll be sad if he's not there when I get home. He was too little to go very far and still be safe.

You might check with a close by vet's office - they may know who he belongs to or have an idea of a safe place for him to go if you can't keep him.

So far the puppy is MIA. Maybe the owner found him. I hope.

Awww. You were so nice to provide shelter and food for the puppy. I sure hope his owner found him/her.
