I keep hearing stories about a new Marvel series called The Legend Of Shang-Chi And The Ten Rings and it's gonna debut on Disney+ in September. What is it about? From the previews this might be an interesting show and hopefully not a letdown. I also learned that Mattel is releasing toys based on this series and the only toy released is some winged animal named Morris that's a plushie

It's a Marvel comic hero that came out in the seventies. Martial Arts assassin turned hero. I dont know who Morris might be.

Yeah, Shang-Chi was created during the kung-fu craze of the 70's. He's basically Bruce Lee but with some elevated powers. The "Ten Rings" refers to a Marvel villain called The Mandarin, who is typically an Iron Man villain. The terrorist group that kidnapped Tony Stark in the first Iron Movie was associated with the Ten Rings and "The Mandarin" we saw in Iron Man 3 was a fake. The actual Mandarin has ten alien rings, one on each finger, that each has a different effect. The rings in this movie look different though, but the symbols are the same from the Iron Man movies.

So Shang-Chi is linked to Iron Man? Sounds exciting and sounds like something my mother would enjoy because Iron Man is her Marvel crush. Will Iron Man do a cameo appearence in the movie too?

It is unlikely that iron man will be in the movie. Did you watch End Game? This takes place after that.

No, Shang-Chi is not that linked to Itron Man, though both have been on the Avengers at times in the comics. They are just using the Mandarin, or "The Ten Rings" organization as the villain for Shang Chi in the movie. There may be some Iron Man references though since the MCU is so connected.

On the Mandarin, he was originally a Chinese scientist who discovered 10 alien rings, though his characterization in the 1960's & 70's was a little, well, you know. The same is true for Shang Chi and some of the characters that were around hum, like Fu Manchu - they were just a bit stereotypical, which is why they shied away from Mandarin in the Iron Man movies. By today's standards, that stuff isn't considered appropriate.

Oh, so Shang-Chi And The Ten Rings is actually gonna be a movie? I think Marvel has high hopes that this movie will be a hit and be successful as Guardians Of The Galaxy was. Already Target is releasing exclusive action figures based on this movie so it proves it will be a feather in Marvel's cap

Well, they make exclusive action figures for all Marvel movies, and they want them for the Xmas purchasing season...I'd expect once Shang Chi releases, the Eternals figures will also show up at Target in September if they are not there already...

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings is now a number one hit movie at the theaters. So just as I suspected Disney expects great success for this movie. I think there will be more sequels for Shang-Chi coming in the near future as well

It was a Disney+ drop yesterday. I’ll just say there were some links to other MCU movies that are rather interesting.

I was wondering why the only Marvel One-Shot released to Disney+ was All Hail the King. It was 7 years ago, but Shang-Chi tied up some loose ends.

It’s kind of odd how it isn’t being shown in China, even with big Hong Kong action stars. Apparently the star of the movie (Simu Liu) moved to Canada at age 4 and he had some critical comments about his parents’ time in China, that they grew up poor and people were dying of starvation. For this reason there’s apparently no planned release date in China.

I got to watch The Legend Of Shang-Chi And The Ten Rings today and from what I saw of it it is awesome with loads of action and I had no idea Awkwafina was in this movie and she sure proved her skills as the character Katy and Katy was so cool driving the out of control city bus during the fight scene. I also found it surprising that Shang-Chi was also known by the name Shaun when he came to America so I guess he dropped the g of Shang and became Shaun. I liked Shang's pendant a lot too. I think Marvel did a good job on this movie and who knows maybe a sequel will come soon do you think?

There is something interesting although I’m not sure how it was in theaters. Some of the figurative language wasn’t directly translated. There are also some bits where at least on Disney+ with English and English CC selected, there is no translation at all. I’ve picked up a little bit of Mandarin over the years with a lot of Chinese friends, but I’m certainly not fluent. But I rewatched a few scenes.

But I’ll get to the big one in the article with an explainer as a spoiler. That one wasn’t even close to being translated correctly. It captures the meaning, but adds something not there. And I think a direct translation is one where the "burn" (as the author calls it) would make sense even if translated more directly.

小X跟我讲话 礼貌一点
Xiǎo chi gēn wǒ jiǎng huà lǐ mào yī diǎn
Literally "Little man give me speak talk present appearance one bit".

But figuratively it means something like "Little man, be more polite to me." The subtitles say "Be careful how you speak to me, young man."

我吃了盐 比拟你吃了饭 更多
Wǒ chī le yán bǐ nǐ chī le fàn gèn duō
Literally "I ate X salt compare you ate X rice even more."

But figuratively it means something like "I've eaten more salt than you've eaten rice". It gets a little bit more complicated because "chī le fàn" (吃了饭) more figuratively means "eaten meals". That's how important rice is to the language in Chinese. The translation on the subtitles is "I've lived ten of your lifetimes." which is clearly not even close to the meaning.
