The "I Didn't Have To Cook For 8 Days" DDP review ... 10/13 - 10/20

We’re going back in time to the

215522511-M.jpg

It’s Wednesday, so it’s a Disney-MGM Studios day. After a quick cereal breakfast in the room, we’re off and running.

Time flies when you’re having fun, so it’s now time for our 1:00 p.m. ADR at the 50’s Prime Time Café. We happen to be in the area around 12:35, so we stop in to see if we can check in early, and the answer was yes.

215523902-M.jpg

Which was very nice since it was nice and HOT outside. We didn’t get a drink from the bar because I knew that if I did, there would be no room for a Chocolate Milkshake. And if chocolate is on the menu, there are my food priorities to consider.

215522908-M.jpg

We took a seat in the living room and waited about 15 minutes to be seated, not bad considering we were early.

215522713-M.jpg

I found a hidden Mickey on the coffee table. I'm not very good at finding Hidden Mickey's, so I was very impressed with myself for actually seeing this thing that was literally right in front of my nose:

215522553-S-1.jpg

Uncle Patrick (I sure hope that was his name!) was our server and I was thrilled that he really didn’t get into the role too terribly much of being a nagging Uncle. I think that I was a bit worn out from our non-stop commando schedule thus far to have wanted to play along.

215523631-M-1.jpg

Here is the view to the right of our table, from where I was sitting:

215523608-M.jpg

And the TV above us. I got a kick watching the old TV shows. It looked like they rotated loops of shows every 30 minutes or so. I could be wrong, but suddenly we were seeing different things after a while.

215522915-M.jpg

I had already made up my mind what I was going to get. Prior to our trip I had spent lots of time pouring over the menus on the net deciding what to get at each restaurant. See, while it takes Handsome just minutes to browse the menu and make a decision, it can take me, well... a gadzillion more minutes than him to choose just the right food. Food can make or break a vacation, didn'tcha know? At least that's true in my Book of Rules.

Naturally, I started with a Chocolate Milkshake for the family to share. The Peanut Butter & Jelly shake sounded interesting, but there wasn't any chocolate in it. As I said, I have my priorities to consider. There was enough here to fill the glass at least one more time. It could've been a meal in itself.

215523253-L-1.jpg

For appetizers, The kids got chicken noodle soup. I got the Shrimp Cocktail. Nothing fancy here, just plain old peel-and-eat shrimp with cocktail sauce. Sweetie Girl loved this. I almost forgot to get a photo if it, so that's why there's some shrimp missing :rolleyes1. I'm starting to slip in my duties...

215523068-M.jpg

Handsome got the Fried Boursin Cheese.

215523092-M.jpg

The cheese was awfully yummy, but would have been nice if it was served with bread rather than toast. It’s just a personal preference. The kids helped us gobble this down pretty fast, amidst sips of the choco shake.

Time to order lunch. Handsome got the stacked sandwich with ham and turkey with salad – take a look at this puppy!:

215523487-M.jpg

215523447-M.jpg

Now, the sandwich was so HUGE. I'm not much of a sandwich eater, but this was good. Handsome couldn't finish it all so he got the rest “on wheels”, which he ate for dinner while we were waiting for Fantasmic to begin. And that pickle was yummy with a nice garlic taste. I love a good garlic pickle! I can assure you that there was nothing left of that by the end of the meal.

I got the pot roast:

215523376-M.jpg

My pot roast was falling-off-the-bone tender (without the bone!) and did not have any fat in it. I had read previous reports that there was too much fat in the meat, but it wasn’t that way for me. Yay! The veggie garnish I could’ve done without since it really wasn’t edible. I ate all the meat and some of the potatoes just because, you know, I had to save room for dessert. No one had ordered green beans, so thankfully we didn’t have to worry about eating all of them.

The kids both chose the meatloaf (mostly because we told them they had to!). The reason why we told them what to eat is if we didn’t do that, they’d eat mac ‘n’ cheese for every meal. They gobbled this stuff up.

215523340-M.jpg

While we were eating, Uncle Patrick brought us the dessert menu to read. The kids thought this was very fun!

215523261-M.jpg

Speaking of dessert – here’s Handsome’s angel food cake with berries:

215523753-M.jpg

The kids had - GUESS! - a make-your-own sundae. Amazing. But this time it was served in a chocolate-dipped waffle cone bowl. It was a nice change & the kids liked eating it. What kid doesn't love a waffle bowl?

215523758-M.jpg

And I had the S'mores. Surprise, surprise, surprise. Now, in all the photos I had seen prior to this trip I had not seen the layer of chocolate hiding beneath the marshmallows. I couldn't understand how they could pass this dessert off as s'mores if there wasn't a chocolate bar underneath those mushmellows! But when I took my first bite I realized just how completely wrong I was. Lotsa melted chocolate. I could feel the sugar rotting my teeth. Wowsa. CAN WE SAY CHOCOLATE? :woohoo: What a way to go. But it ended up being too much sugar, so I had to leave the last two marshmallows on the plate. I had my sugar buzz for the day.

215523879-M.jpg

Handsome noted that this was the least expensive table service meal we had while on the DDP, which translated means that he wouldn’t mind forking out the bucks to eat here again when not on a dining plan. And we wouldn’t mind eating here again, either. It was a fun place, the food was your basic comfort food, and it was well prepared and good. So if we ever go back to the Disney Studios again, we’ll be happy to eat here one more time. Although the thought of eating at Sci Fi Drive In is kind of intriguing... :scratchin Decisions, decisions.

HI! I'm LOVING your reviews. It's making me VERY hungry!!! I can't wait until the next one!

in my world there's no such thing as too much chocolate.

We would get along very well...this is pretty much my life motto. :thumbsup2

We love 50's Prime Time and oh my gosh, the pot roast. Yum.

Quiltymom your food TR is awesome!! I have enjoyed the whole thing and the photos are wonderful! Thanks for sharing.

We have several of the same ADRs for our upcoming trip so you have helped me out a great deal!

Suz

Hello, Kindred Spirit! :wave2: It's always nice to meet another chocoholic out there. But then, we're everywhere, aren't we?

And thanks everyone for your kind comments. I've been having lots of fun with this foodie TR. I was helped so much by other reports before our trip that I knew I wanted to share my experiences with others, too. I have a much easier time dealing with the unknown (we aren't frequent WDW visitors), so seeing stuff beforehadn really helped.

I'll be working on the next installment today...

See ya! :mickeybar

:cheer2: QuiltyMom’s Tip of the Day :cheer2: If Disney Studios closes at 7:30 and you're staying to see Fantasmic, you’ll have limited choices of what to eat for dinner, so check out your options early on in the day!

Yes, We were quite amazed that by 6:00 - and maybe even way before then - most all of the counter service places were closed. Just before the parade began (which my kids didn't want to see - bummer!) I noticed that some places were being closed down. When we went into the 5:15 Indiana Jones Stunt Show, the drinks stand at the entrance had just closed. Funny they would close it before the show began. We were dying of thirst, but all there was to drink was water from a drinking fountain. Since we had literally just run from the Lights, Motor Action stunt show, we didn’t have much time to stop anywhere else if we wanted to catch the last Indy show.

I digress. As I went to get my photo with the Ratatouille rats, Remy & Emile ... (I just love these guys! ):

... DH & the kids went on Star Tours one last time. As they left the show they inquired where we could get dinner food, and they were told that there was Pizza Planet & I think the Backlot Express (which were in the opposite direction of Fantasmic) or the few vendors at the Sunset Ranch Market still open. This was 6:00 p.m.

So, we had a choice of burgers, pizza or turkey legs, and we chose Catalina Eddies for pizza and salad.

215999969-M.jpg

Since they do not have kids meals there, the kids got to choose from the adult menu.

216000190-M.jpg

This place reminded me a lot of the Los Angeles Farmer's Market. It could be for all I know. I haven't researched that yet - something new to do! Here's Disney:

221015383-M.jpg

221015440-M.jpg

... and here's L.A.:

221049034-M.jpg

221049033-M.jpg

You see the resemblance too, don't you? ::yes::

I liked the Victory Garden located to the side of the restaurant:

221015838-L-1.jpg

And if any of you are fans of the new Dr. Who, this pic just may give you the willies. (Mommy ...) :scared: (check it out if you dare!)

221015942-M.jpg

We grabbed our food and headed on over to:

221016237-M.jpg

I had read that you can get there 45 minutes early and still get a seat. Well, this is one hour early and the place was almost filled to capacity:

221016404-M.jpg

We found our seats in the next to the last section way over to the left. And it took forever to get out of the place after the show. But by then the restrooms were practically empty (DD had told me just as the show was starting that she had to go potty! :scared1: ), and by the time we got to the bus stop there really wasn't a line for the bus.

Anyway, back to the food.

The kids both got pizza, chips, cake (one chocolate & the other carrot) & chocolate milk (we saved the chips for another day).

216000250-L-1.jpg

and I got a chicken ceasar salad, chocolate cake & an orange soda.

216000368-M.jpg

Once again, there was lots of chicken in this salad. I couldn’t finish it all, so I just picked through the lettuce until all the meat was gone. I even passed on the chocolate cake I was so full. Can you believe that?

Handsome just ate his leftover sandwich from lunch, so I didn’t get a pic of his meal since it was a repeat and it was all falling apart by then. I thought that I'd spare you the sight.

If we hadn’t chosen this to eat, we would’ve had to join everyone else in the stadium to eat hot dogs & whatever else they sell there at the Fantasmic! Staduim. I think that we made the better choice. The food was good and the kids were thrilled to actually get pizza AND chocolate milk at the same time.

See, sometimes we are nice parents. ;)

Here's some pics of the show:

what a nice way to eat bringing it into Fantasmic. I cannot believe how busy that place is. When we went it was full. so many people.
great pics.

love Dr. Who

Another great review! I have to tell you Quiltymom, your review of Le Cellier has caused me to make ADR's for dinner there!! I had planned to skip it even though it does get a lot of praise on the DIS, but since we are Canadian I thought we would try something different. Now, we are going!!!

Suz

That pizza does look pretty good actually. We've still not seen Fantasmic - I can't believe how full the theatre was an hour before the show :scared1:

I just wanted to let ya'll know that I have started my trip report: I Got My Disney Fix and I Feel Fine! An Illustrated Story.

Thanks! You will not regret eating there. If I could only fix steak like they could. If only I was eating dinner there tonight! Maybe I should make the Cheddar Cheese soup for dinner.

The pizza was good. I had to taste everyone's meal for scientific purposes, you know. popcorn:: The kids devoured every slice.

I had the pot roast too and thought it was really yummy except the hard vegetables

Your ceaser salad looks really good :thumbsup2

I know, what is with those vegetables? If they were meant for a garnish only, they should've warned us. Oh well. Just a teeny-tiny and hardly noticible glitch in the meal.

The smores made me forget all about those petrified veggies! :rotfl2:

Yeah but then our waitress fed them to me as I'd left them, :scared: couldn't exactly spit them out :rotfl2:

This is the first time I ventured over to a Food Report! I'm loving it! I can't wait to share the pics with my DH!

I enjoyed your Pre-trip - can't wait to start reading the trip report!

Your Elizabeth Swann costume is gorgeous!! You are WAY talented!!

Can't wait for the rest of the ride!

Great Job!
