The Home Depot College Football Awards Show @ The Boardwalk

We arrive at WDW on the 9th and were planning a non-park day on Thursday, the 11th, at the BWI area. We are not into college football and prefer to avoid the crowds as much as possible. Should we try to change our plans? How much does this event increase crowds?

Thanks!

You won't see any effect from the event other than the area between Atlantic Dance Hall and Jellyrolls.:)

That area will become more and more "congested" as the day goes on peaking with the Red Carpet Show at 6:00 PM.:)

Good to know! Thanks :thumbsup2

As exciting as this sounds for CFB fans, I hate to be the downer but keep in mind that this is a PRIVATE event that is by-invitation-only, it is not any different from any other private events that happen on WDW property all the time. If you are lucky and happen to be in the vicinity, you MIGHT catch a glimpse of a sports celebrity walking in or out of an event, however, the chances that you can actually attend or see an event are slim to none, they often have heavy security at these types of events to keep the general public away. Just saying (from personal experience)... :confused3

I don't think anybody here actually thinks that they can attend the event INSIDE the Atlantic Dance Hall.

Having been in the area for past shows, you are able to stand in many areas and watch the nominees arrive, watch the many ESPN shows that are going on and even sometimes meet a celebrity or two if you are in the right place at the right time.

Security is there to keep people in control and to protect the participants but to assume that the area is in "lock down" is just a wrong assumption. We have met in past years RG3, Fred Biletnikoff and several other coaches and players I just can't recall.:confused3

This.:)

The Athletes,Coaches and ESPN Presonalities stay at Boardwalk Inn and are often walking up and down The Boardwalk going from place to place and,at least the ones I've met,are always glad to stop for a moment for a quick picture.:)

Some of the Athletes will be out in the Parks Wednesday and Thursday taping "spots" for the Show and will sign autographs as time allows.

For the live Shows outside on The Boardwalk starting at 2:00 PM Thursday,Atheletes and Coaches will be appearing all afternoon and are glad to take a quick picture coming or going from their TV appearance.

At The Red Carpet Show just about EVERYBODY walks the Carpet and they sign a few autographs as they walk(for this event,Guests do need to arrive early and "stake out" a spot if they want to be close to the Carpet).

So it's definitely not a "locked down"(except the actual Awards Show(which they show live outside the Dance Hall on some TVs) event-quite the contrary.:)

The point I am trying to make is that if this event was actually intended for the public then it would be advertised, which it is not. Of course the events that are taped outdoors in public areas will be exposed to guests walking by and hence you may be able to SEE certain things if you happen to be in that area at the right time, however, the intent of these events are for the invited VIPs attending, the media, the sponsorship entities, and the celebrities, not the general public. I am being realistic for those who may think that they can plan an entire vacation around this and show up expecting to participate in private event.

But again you are speculating. From the tone of your posts you have never been to this event or in the area when it has happened. I have been there as have several previous posters. There is a lot more possibilities than just "seeing" things happen. Every year there is a growing crowd of autograph hounds, they wouldn't be there if the possibility did not exist for getting autographs.

I do not see any posts for people "Planning a Vacation" around this event and just because you have not seen it does not mean it is not being advertised. Have you tuned in to any of the ESPN channels this week?

Now if you wanted to say that showing up to this does not guarantee that you will see anybody in particular or get an autograph or picture with anybody, I will agree 100% with you on that.

BTW if anybody is going, say hello to the guy outside the ESPN trucks. He is on the heavy side and smokes. He is from Youngstown Ohio and we have talked to him each time for the last 5 years

I saw Marcus Mariota,Kevin White,Rece Davis and Danny Kanell in New Fantasyland this morning filming a spot for the show.:)

They were throwing footballs to each other through the Castle Walls with Goofy as the "referee"-really cute.:)

Mariota seems like a really class guy.:)

If you got a pic of Rece, please post! I work with an old classmate of his who would love to see that!

Can't believe Landon Collins didn't win. So terribly disappointed for Prescott :(. I really think Mariota deserves the Heisman, so hoped Dak would get the Maxwell.

We've been here at BWI since Sunday watching the pre-show stage construction. We watched it from our balcony this evening with the TV show on inside the room. Pretty cool! We watched the trophies being posed and filmed in various locations for the last couple days.

Today we saw some athletes in MK posing for photos. I wouldn't recognize them myself.

I don't have a real good picture of Rece, but he is in this one a little.:)

Very cool--thanks! Check out Mariota's hands...they're as big as the Mickey gloves! No wonder he's so accurate. I'm happy for him--nice to see nice guys win! Glad Cooper at least got invited--that's still a big honor for him. He's a nice guy too.

For anyone who hasn't seen the news,2014 was the last year for the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on The Boardwalk. It was agreat 2 decade run. http://sportsvideo.org/main/blog/2014/12/college-football-awards-will-move-to-atlantas-college-football-hall-of-fame-in-2015-espn-to-televise/
Aw man!!!! I never knew it was at Disney until we missed it by 2 days, and now it's gone :(. Well Atlanta is MUCH closer for me--and definitely easier to plan a trip last minute--but way less cool. Thanks for the info!!!
