After 50
Ive said this from the start of the season until now. You can only truly judge a team after its first 50 games of the season. Why 50? Because by then teams usually show their highs and lows. Any team can be hot for a week or two and any team can be terrible for a week or two as we have seen from the Red Sox this season and other baseball teams.
Here is my rating of the Red Sox right now: A-
This is a really good grade actually. They are currently 28-22 on the season with a .560 win %, and tied for first in the AL East which is the tuftiest division in baseball. They have played both great baseball and some of the worst baseball you will ever see though.
Just about everyone after out 0-6 start and out 2-10 start was about ready to write the Red Sox out for the season. But I know the Red Sox were a lot better then their record. They started off with terrible hitting with RISP and not great starting pitching. But after our 2-10 start we went on a spree of wins.
For a span about 2 weeks after the start our starting pitching from all 5 guys was nearly no hittable. Our bats weren’t where we wanted to but we didn’t need them as much because of pitching.
After that our Starting pitching about equaled out to where it normal is (above average for most clubs) with the exception of John Lackey’s terribleness and lack of any command and Dice-K’s inconstantly you would not know if he was going to give up 7 runs in the first or pitch a shut out. Josh Beckett and Jon Lester were both in Cy Young dominance with Beckett posting an ERA under 2 with 1.69 (AL Leading) and Jon Lester pitching great despite a couple of bleh outing went 7-1 (AL leading). While Clay Buchholz rebounded from a very tough start we went back on pace from where he left off from last season.
Our bats finally came back also. The problem wasn’t getting on base, it was what we were going to do after they got on. Adrian Gonzalez went off in one of the most insane performances of hitting you will ever see out of any hitter. In the month of May he hit 8 home runs (in 9 games) and drove in 28 RBIs. Let me put this in prospective, that is all some guys will do in a whole season. Jacoby Ellsbury, Carl Crawford and Kevin Youkilis all posted .300+ BA in May and that really helped out the Sox so much. Jarrod Saltalamacchia just started to get hot with 4 homers this month and seems to be the solution to “the catching situation”. David Ortiz has continued David Ortizing, but now with out the first month slump. JD Drew has constantly been average and really nothing more. The only everyday player to be in a slump in May was Dustin Pedroia. All of his numbers have been down this month, but hey a couple of years ago he was batting .180 and know what happened next? Laser show.
The Red Sox are hot right now, going 26-12 since their 2-10 start. This is the team that every one excepted to reach 100 wins, now is it going to happen? Probably not, but this team is going to be at or near the top of the division for most of the year and hopefully be at the top the game where it matter #162.
i love this, and jack is awesome.
