Hatfields, McCoys Take Feud To Court
Dispute Dates To 1870s

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- More than a century after the last shots were fired, the Hatfields and the McCoys are taking a latter-day feud to court.

McCoy descendants are suing Hatfield descendants for the right to visit a small cemetery on an Appalachian hillside in Kentucky. It holds the remains of six McCoys, including three tied to pawpaw trees and killed by the Hatfields in 1882.

McCoy descendants claim they haven't been able to visit the cemetery in more than three years because it's on land owned by a Hatfield heir and the driveway is marked "No Trespassing."


The feud is thought to have begun in the 1870s over a stolen pig. By 1888, at least 12 people had died in the shooting war. The violence ended by 1900 and the two families have held joint reunions.

This was in my paper a couple weeks back. Only the paper reported that the McCoys wanted to develop the gravesite into a tourist attraction, and the Hatfield property owner didn't want tourist traffic at his home, and thus the lawsuit. According to the article, the McCoys are claiming that the Hatfield is denying Americans the right to visit such a historic site.
