The Good Old Days

I have visited through the years with a few 1994 inaugural WDWM alumni.

The race in the early years was much different from today. First the expo was not a huge affair. In fact it was held at Pleasure Island. The expo was a two day affair Friday and Saturday. At the time and through the early 2000,s WDW held as official pasta feed. In 1994 it was held at the Contemporary on Saturday night.

Also in 94 the race started at 6 am. The starting line is approximately in the same Epcot Parking Lot location as the Epcot based 5k’s; at the canal near the current finish line. From there the race took the feeder road out along the path you drive into the parking lot today for the race. From the start it bended left and then made one of the parking lot exits onto Epcot Drive. The course followed Epcot up the Cast Member Drive ramp and then into the backstage area of Epcot. Note this is the reverse of the current course from about mile 4.5 back through 3.5. Instead of coming into Epcot in the World Showcase, the route took a path from the guard shack into the Futureworld section just under Spaceship Earth for those around 10 years ago, the OLD 5k course at this point). From Spaceship Earth the course followed the current course path around the World Showcase up to the point of the International Gate. At the I-Gate the course exited the park and then made a path around Crescent Lake on what would become the Boardwalk Inn and Villa side of the like. The boardwalk was in place for the tram that operated between the Swan/Dolphin Resort to the I-Gate, but the BWV was just starting construction.

After hitting the intersection neat the current Atlantic Dance Hall, the course took a cast member road past the Yacht Club Resort and out through the YC valet parking lot. Once out onto Epcot Resorts Blvd the course went right and followed the road past the Beach Club, under the water bridge that is along that rode and followed Epcot Resorts Blvd across Buena Vista and into MGM Parking (now DHS). The course entered the front of MGM and ran kind of backwards to the path taken today… down Hollywood Blvd, commissary lane, and the Streets of America and then backstage. The course exited MGM at the point we currently enter on Buena Vista. Like today, the course heads east but once on World Dr heads north to MK. Once past Epcot Blvd, the course follows the current course up to MK parking, the TTC, under Seven Seas and into the Cast member gate near Space Mountain.

The course essentially follows the same route, making the right hand onto Bear Island towards the water works plant. In the vicinity of the plant, the course U-turns and comes back out Bear Island making a 3 mile out and back loop. Once back to the World Dr, the course returned back to Epcot just like the half does today. The exception is that the course takes the real road into the parking lot and follows the tram road up to the front gate. The course entered the park and finished under Space Ship Earth. OK the last sentence seems to be a rumor as the first finish was just in front of the gate.

Changes in the years…

There were only two races a 5k and the marathon and yes some ran both.
There were kiddo races also.
Marathon ran through all three parks
The first race sold out at 6,000 runners. Today the race weekend will have the capacity to have sold 50,000 plus spots.
Much of the course uses the same roadways, but not in the same order.
The original time limit in 94 was 6 hours, not the 7 of today.
The first races used to old stay in your corral line after you cross the finish and your tear off tog from your bib will be placed in order and attached to a time.
The first race had many VIPs , Salazar, Galloway, Benoit-Samuelson, Bill Rogers, Greg Meyer, Mary Slaney.
The first race was started with a marching band parading through the start line just before the start.

Thanks for the info.

I remember how different it was in 1996 and today. Especially since AK didn't exist. It was fun going through Blizzard Beach.

Charles, thanks for the historical perspective. I miss those pasta dinners. Imagine getting a pasta dinner thrown in with your marathon entry fee. :cool1:

Since this will be my family's first WDW Marathon weekend experience and we have no idea what to expect or anything to compare it to, that is really cool to read! Thanks so much for sharing!

Do you know approx. how many will run in each race this year?
(5K, 1/2, full?)

I think the full and the half each get about 24-25,000, with another 5,000 or so in the 5k.

John pretty much nailed the count of entries... something like 20,000 Full and 25,000+ Half and about 6000 ish5ks

Actual starts are considerably lower than entries. That number is rarely made public. Expect about 12-14k full finishers and 16-18k half finishers

Thanks Charles. I have a feeling I would be much happier running at Disneyworld in the old days. I am so scared of these crowds. Plus, I like things to be more simple. The marching band start sounds great.

How many of the marathons have you run? Are you getting 5 medals this year? ;)

Don't be too scared. That sounds like a lot of people, but the crowds really aren't that bad. Waiting in line for a bus or a porta-potty can take a while, but the rest of the time, the crowds aren't too bad. Like the Rock n Roll races, Disney does a pretty good job of keeping the number of people in each corral down to a reasonable number and then spacing them out enough that you're able to get up to speed pretty quickly. Also, having this many people in the race gives you plenty of people to talk to along the way, use as motivation when you're feeling down, or to chase when you're making that sprint to the finish. There are a few narrow points on the course where you have to slow down for people, but not too many.

Charles, did they have color TV back then? :rotfl:

you will be fine. Looks like John is adopting more of a Rock and Roll type of waive start that should make you feel a lot more comfortable with the crowding.

For the half the Seven Seas waterbridge (mile 4.5) and the MK to GF stretch (mile 6-7) may feel a little crowded.

For the full, The first real bridge (mile 5), the water bridge (9.6), MK-GF (mile 11-12) and the sidewalk from DHS-BWV (mile 23.6-24.2) may feel crowded.

I seriously doubt that you will feel overly populated at any other point on the course. Well, maybe water stops and early porta potty lines. I actually feel like the race is a lot smaller due to the back road orientation of the event.

As for the number of marathons.........

#20 on January 9. I actually bailed out and ran the half at the San Antonio RNR marathon to preserve the milestone number for Disney

And no, I am only getting three at WDW this year. I do run 3-5 miles on Friday morning but prefer to not feel the pressure of a race morning start. I have a tough enough time keeping the pace to a marathon pace on my Friday AM jog.

No matter that this is not the first time for me. I'm still feeling the nerves building.

Congrats on your marathon numbers. Are you a Marathon Maniac?

Thanks for your walk down memory lane.

Thanks John and Charles. I hope you are both right. You do have to understand that I have only run one race, a half, this April and there were 1025 people total in the half and full that day. That is the kind of crowd I can handle. So, now I get to multiply that by 25 each day and that doesn't count all the extra spectators, volunteers, and entertainers along the course. The good news in all of that is that there will be so much more support and encouragement and I may very likely need that if my ankle is hurting. :thumbsup2 So, it's all good. Plus, I can't imagine anything better than running at Disneyworld. I may think differently in 2 weeks though.

You're right. The spectator support is one nice side benefit of running in a race with a large field, especially at Disney. Not only are the spectators very loud and supportive, the cast members are terrific too. It's really nice to see them out there along the parts of the course where friends and family of the runners can't get to. Having lots of runners around you for support is nice too. I'm a very social runner and like talking to and running with random people the whole way along, so without the large numbers of runners, I'd just be talking to myself. :)

Ha! You are right, I do remember. Sunday night at 7 pm.

Unfortunately, we did not have the TV to match the color the first couple years. It took the NFL broadcasting in color to influence the decision maker at the time. Then it was a monthly exercise in watching the TV repairman come in and replace a tube now and then.

Dont worry so much about the crowds - Disney is exceptionally good at 2 things: moving large crowds of people and seperating you from your money.

Pay attention when you're walking around after the marathon (and yes you should walk around after it for the soreness). Honestly after about noon you really can't tell a marathon of 20K people just passed through. The water stops are either out on the roads, or just before and immediately after leaving the park. This way the cleanup effort won't interfere with the parks. I even have a picture of the 5k last year when there was a cart following the last few people in the race, literally picking up the cones a few feet behind them.

The only time when the spectator crowd is really thick and you might feel a little cramped is in the magic kingdom, but really the energy there is addictive. And once you get out of that you'll have a couple brief cheering squads at the Poly and GF. Then you're onto settling in for the haul to AK. Disney posted signs along the side of the course with fun little trivia things. Couldnt really read them too well. Eyes frozen.

And the cast members seem to have a lot of fun with it. Just as we were leaving MK last year they had pulled out the 2 pirate floats from parades and they were staging a mock pirate battle. Or maybe I was hallucinating because of the cold. Little of column A, little of column B.

Oh and on that water thing, remember that as you're heading past Yacht/Beach Club. Thats it till the finish as far as water goes. But its only like a mile and a half at that point.
