The Foodies eat drink and be merry, happy holiday trip report! 12/19/07 thru 12/24/07

We had decided ahead of time that Friday would be our water day and our day to relax at the RPR pool. So with our Crocs and swimsuits on we headed out the door. We saw the boat waiting to take everyone to the parks but today we decided to walk. It was a very relaxing walk took maybe 7 minutes and the plants and trees lining the sidewalk made for a relaxing walk and the perfect way to start the day. We had booked 8:30 reservations at confisco’s grill for the grinch holiday breakfast buffet. We went into this not expecting much of anything from the food and I’m glad we didn’t because about the only thing we thought was good was the texas toast covered in sugar/brown sugar and cinnamon yum yum. Yes they had green eggs and ham on offer and the typical breakfast buffet fare and lets be honest you don’t really book these kinds of things for the food but more for the character interaction and on that front we were not disappointed. Simply amazing and well run and we will do it again next Christmas when we return. The Christmas Grinch and the Who’s

were making there way around to each and every table for pictures and spent a lot of time with each group and never rushed.
UniversalVacation07098.jpg
They had a cast member walking around to each table to make sure that the Grinch had stopped by and if he hadn’t they marked it on the list and made certain that he made it around to the table. When the Grinch and Who’s took a break then the cat in the hat

and thing 1 and 2 would come out and make their way around to each table and they also never rushed and thing 1 and 2 spent extra time at our table because our DD was being such a ham with them everyone in the place was laughing and having a good time.

I can’t say enough good things about the character interaction with the kids at the tables. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

After breakfast it was time for the water rides. First up was the Jurassic Park River adventure. This was great and that drop at the end wow. We didn’t get very wet but I guess that depends on where you sit because the family 2 rows behind us got soaked. DD enjoyed the ride so much she wanted to go again and we had the FOTL so we hopped back in line and walked on for another ride around. After that it was over to Bilge Rat Barge and it was also a walk on. There is absolutely no way to not get soaked on this ride. DW did want to get wet so she stayed behind to shoot us with the water cannons lol. :rotfl2: At the end of the ride DD and I were soaked from head to toe

DD just loved it and we were already wet and we had FOTL so we rode again. We passed on Dudley’s not sure why DD was tall enough but we were so wet after the Barge ride that we just decided to head back to the RPR pool to relax and swim. We took the boat back to the RPR and picked out 3 lounge chairs and I picked up towels from the guy at the towel shack and DW kicked back to relax and DD and I went for a swim. DD loved the water play area and the pool was heated so it was really nice. We all took a soak in the hot tub which was relaxing and we had that all to ourselves which was nice. The waiters were making their rounds and stopped to ask if we needed anything. We ordered drinks, DW had a mango daiquiri I had a Witch Doctor or something like that and DD had a strawberry smoothie which she said was great.

DW and I had really strong drinks (the best kind) and since the waiter had left our tab open and took such good care of us stopping by every 20 minutes to see if we needed anything you know we just had to order another round  We had made reservations at Tchop Chop for that night so we didn’t want to eat a large meal for lunch so we ordered a burger and a turkey sandwich from the bar

they were huge and actually very tasty. We had such a nice relaxing time by the pool and DD had a wonderful time playing and swimming. We were glad we sat aside a day to just relax by the pool and wished we actually could have taken a longer vacation just to have another day to lounge by the pool. One last thing before we left our waiter brought us complimentary Smoothies in 3 different flavors, Mango, Banana and Strawberry and I have to agree with DD they were delicious. It was a wonderful relaxing day.

That’s the best thing about US/IOA and the on-site hotels. Sure you can go commando and do and see everything in 1 day and FOTL is the best thing since sliced bread and I’m sure you could have a very enjoyable on-site vacation with a short 2 or 3 day stay. But if you really just want to relax, not feel rushed, wake up late, head to the parks just to ride MIB or Spiderman and then go back to the hotel, then a longer stay is the best way to go. I’ve seen lots of posts asking if 2 or 3 days is tooo long of a stay, well it’s our family’s opinion that if we could spend 7+ days on site we would do it. Our 5 night 6 day stay was so much fun and very relaxing but too short so Next Christmas season we are planning on 7 nights 8 days and we can’t wait to go back and are already counting down the days. I’ve done Disney before and even with a 7 day stay we were rushing around and standing in line so much it just wasn’t as relaxing, fun yes, but not relaxing.

Up next I knock over the table that has our drinks (no I hadn’t had too much to drink lol that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.) we call it a day at the pool and head back to the room to change and get ready for Tchop chop.

Wow - I'm really enjoying your TR. We've never been to US but are considering it, and this is so helpful!

How was your room? Do they have any with balconies? That was a concern with me, as I like a balcony. Sounds like loads of fun though!

Most rooms do NOT have a balcony.... none at RPR (that I'm aware of), nor the HRH....there are maybe a handful at PBH, but usually in the Portofino or Villa suites (or higher "suite" level)....

Great Thread, I have been thinking of going for the Grinch Christmas, and I think your trip just pushed me over the edge!!

Dinner at Tchop Chop

We’re off to ** insert fanfare here** Tchop chop

Ok so in my previous post I mentioned that I knock over our drinks table. Well here’s what happened. I reached over to get my shoe… I reached over a little to far fell out off the lounger into the table the drinks went flying spilled all over the sand and all DW and DD could do was bust out laughing at me not a single are you ok or a what happened just unbridled laughter at my expense. Now that I think back it was pretty hilarious but at the time well it just wasn’t funny ok maybe a little. Well since I’d knocked over the last of our drinks and the sun was going down we decided to head up to the room to change clothes for our dinner at Tchop chop. I’d mentioned that we didn’t go into any of the restaurants with high expectations and we didn’t but Tchop chop and Emerils City walk were the two exceptions to that and we did have high hopes and let me just say we were not disappointed. This was outstanding service and the food was everything we expected and more. We had made reservations thru the opentable web site and when we arrived at the podium the maitre de asked if we had reservations we said yes and it was a good thing because the couple in front of us was turned away because they didn’t have a ressie. We were promptly seated and within a matter of moments our waitress was at our table filling us in on the specials for the evening, giving us a rundown of the menu and drink specials and proceeded to take our drink orders. Now for those that have been to Emerils you’ll already know that you have a team of people waiting on you. While the waitress was telling us about the menu one of the team brought our shrimp chips and dipping sauce and when the waitress was telling us about the special holiday pomegranate mojito’s we had a question about them and she sent over our bar runner who filled us in with great detail about them, specifically fresh pomegranate juice so we chose to try those and wow these were out of this world. Honestly I cant remember everything we ordered because we all ordered off the nightly specials menu and I didn’t take a copy with me but what I can remember and yes it’s a bit fuzzy because yes I admit this time DW and I did drink tooo much; those mojitos were great! DD ordered a kids steak that was so tender you could cut it with a fork and she said it was one of the best steaks she’s ever had. She also orded this drink the bar runner said was from asia and tasted like bubble gum and came in a bottle with a marble in it. DD loved these and had 3 of them and yes DW and I tried it and it did taste like bubble gum. I’d describe it as bubble gum and sprite and was actually refreshing not overly sweet. DW ordered the Crab cake for an appetizer this was so good we actually ordered another one. The Crab was so fresh and the mango salsa on top just put it over the top. Any time we go to a restaurant that offers crab cakes for an appetizer we order them because we find it’s a really good way to tell the caliber of the restaurant it’s hard to make a good crab cake but wow Tchop Chop had one of the best crab cakes we’ve ever had. DW also ordered a steak that was on the special menu and she also said that it was fork tender and one of the best she’s every tried. Cooked perfectly Med/Well for her and seasoned wonderfully. I ordered the chef’s tasting menu W/wine pairings. It began with a sushi type appetizer, then onto a fish course, then a steak course cooked medium for me and it was cooked perfectly. Finally a desert and for the life of me I can’t remember what the desert was but everything was just of the utmost quality and the flavors melded so well together. During dinner we had a few more rounds of the mojitos (told ya they were good lol) I had 3 wine pairings with my dinner; of the 3 I only enjoyed one of them so that was a disappointment but I can overlook that because the food was sooo good. I do remember the name of the wine that we thought was so good because our bar runner who was giving me the info on the wines as he brought them over and wow was he ever knowledgeable about the wines was cracking jokes with us about the name of the wine, it was called mange a trios’. Actually DW tried that wine as well as liked it so much we bought a case when we got back home. We had great service from all of the team, when my DW and DD got up to use the restroom one of the member’s of the team was immediately at the table to fold the napkins up and place them back on the table neatly folded for their return. It is this level of detail that really separates a good restaurant from a great restaurant and Tchop chop at least for us was a great restaurant. For Desert DW had a special holiday cheesecake that was outstanding had little pieces of candy cane in it and of course she had to have one more mojito lol. I was burned out on the mojito’s so I had what my DW refers to as my old man’s drink lol a drambue and cup of coffee. Served the proper way in a snifter with a generous pour, you’d be surprised how many places will serve this the wrong way in a highball glass or worse a shot glass and the coffee was outstanding as well. The décor was amazing, dim lighting, wonderful tile work on the walls and the food well all I can say is if you enjoy good food and don’t mind spending the money (it is expensive) it’s well worth every penny. Dinner was about 2 and ½ hours and we never felt rushed or that they were in a hurry to turn the table it was most relaxing and enjoyable for the whole family. After dinner we were full and a lil tipsy, in DW’s case a lot tipsy and it was such a wonderful night not to hot/not to cold, we found a table outside and just sat and watched the stars it was a great way to end the night.

I am really enjoying your report coffeeguy!! can't wait to read more :thumbsup2
