We just got back from our second cruise last week (4 days on the Wonder). Our son has had check-out privileges on both that cruise and when we did the 7 day Western.
My wife and I have actually found it to be a great experience for our son who likes his independence because we know there are 1,000+ pairs of eyes of the crew members who are constantly keeping tabs on the kids. For example, on the 4 day, our room steward, Paul, would let us know when and where he last saw our son, even if we already knew.
The ship is a self-contained space so it's not like they can wander off. Our son spent most of his time in public areas like Studio Sea, the arcade or bopping in and out of the lab.
Anyway, that's been our experience. Every family and child is different.
Donna - hi! Just wanted to let you know we started off the 4 day with a Mojito.
