The First Songstress

Did she mock the mockingbird? Or perhaps call back to some other creature that sang, unseen, in the dark green canopy above? Did it spring from her, a natural thing, as she coaxed her child to sleep on a cold and windy night?

I can imagine that it first began as a noisy hum, a quieter relative of the grunts and shrieks that were used to capture and hold attention. Over time the hum took flight on its own and ran a trill over melodies thought and expressed all in an instant. Perhaps she noticed that the song drew attention even when it was sung quietly....especially when it was sung quietly.

Did she feel, even from the start, her spirit lift as she raised her voice in song or was that a facet to her song that joined in joy, as the song grew deeper in her?

What a wonder the day when other voices joined with hers! Ancient tunes learned and different voices joining in to form a simple harmony. All as one pausing then continuing the simple song. All as one breathing together and feeling what it is that music makes us feel. All as one gazing into nighttime's fires, letting thought take its own wing as the song provided comfort. All as one sharing memories of other times the song was sung, of other voices who had gone silent.

Whatever gods they had must have smiled. Knowing that she had created a key, a wonderful key, to her spirit and her soul. One that as she used it would let the gods peer in and touch her. And she would know it. She would feel them approaching. She would sing her song to bid them welcome. She would sing her song to open herself to them.

Soon enough, words were joined with song. Words that seemed to fall to the ground when spoken soared to the heavens when placed in song. Simple phrases took on complexities and wonders never imagined in the spoken voice. They grew deep and profound, or perhaps silly and laughable, when sung. Words were crafted to melody, in fact they came to own the melody itself. In this creation histories were celebrated and tomorrows gazed upon.

Before all of that came the first songstress, her simple voice creating a melody.

She sang alone for just a moment then bade us all to join her.

It has been a while since I visited here. I hope you don't mind my sharing this little thought with you :)

As a singer, I like to imagine that the first sounds we uttered were songlike.

Thank you for sharing that Bernie! Lovely thoughts.

Nice to see you over here too.
