These conservative folks deserve tolerance like anyone else. I always love to sit back and see society attack conservatives because it is usually the same folks who'd march for tolerance and freedom from judgment, etc. The hypocrisy astounds me. Let these folks be weird. Let them love their kids, teach them well, and spend all their time together. If that's weird, I'm sure they are glad they are not normal!
My point exactly. Our society claims to be all about tolerance -- until it's a conservative family, then they're freaks.

Personally, while I think this family is quite extreme, I think that in general children who lead conservative, disciplined lives are probably better off than children from families who veer in the other direction: those who are allowed to run wild with no one to reign them back in.

Again, who said anything about their politics? How do you know that if they were a liberal, hippie, non-relgious family with 16 kids cut off from the outside world that people would not be commenting or calling them freaks?

This has nothing to do with politics. But since we are on that topic our society is not all about tolerance -- at least not the conservative half.

And even if this was a political issue -- you have't seen anyone calling to pass laws or constitutional amendments to prevent them from making their choice have you? That is what intolerance is about not commenting on a family that has prostituted itself on TV.

I have no issues with the homeschooling. My issues is that their kids dont just help clean and watch the kids. They run the house. one of the older girls job is making dinner EVERY DAY for all 18 of them. each older kid has a younger sibling that they feed, wash, dress, change, help with their lessons and chores everyday, in addition to their own studies, chores, and violin or piano practice. Its like a 10 year old have a child of their own. They arent allowed to be kids. On the last special they were talking to a few off the 10 and unders and all they kept talking about was how they wanted to have 15 kids just like mommy........

Conservative is not soley associated with politics:

1. Favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change.
2. Traditional or restrained in style: a conservative dark suit.
3. Moderate; cautious: a conservative estimate.

4. Of or relating to the political philosophy of conservatism.
Belonging to a conservative party, group, or movement.

MrsPete was not commenting their political affiliation.

They are a very conservative (non-politically speaking) family.

:confused3

Actually Jim Duggar is a failed politician. He recently ran and lost a bid for the Senate on the Republican ticket. So, in this family's case Conservative is a political affliliation.

But no one here has commented on their political or religious beleifs as a reason for thinking they are "freaks". And again, if they were a hippy, pagan family with that many children in a cloistured environment then you would be hearing the same comments more or less. And no one has said they should not be allowed to do this. Being intolerant would be to say we should stop them from doing this by making it illegal and no one has said that, so the whole tolerance thing was just to make a dig at liberals and you know that.

Still confused?

I think that they're weird but I support their right to be so. I feel sad for their kids because how will they ever meet someone to marry or even be friends with in some cases? From what I understand the kids share rooms so that privacy that so many teens seem to cherish won't be happening in that house either.

Like I said, more power to them to lead the life they choose but it's creepy IMO.

All I have to say is that she really needs a new hairstyle!!!!

I'm very conservative, I homeschool 3 of my 4 (the 4th is in college), but that family is *not* something to be admired. My brother and SIL are the "Duggars minus 10". They have 6 kids, "homeschool", live on a compound, go to a very small church. My brother says, "We believe in gun control in our school. We teach our kids how to control 'em." :sad2: At the moment, the 1 boy and 5 girls share 2 bedrooms and a single bath.

I don't know where people get the idea that the Duggar's kids are "loved". In the most recent show I saw, the parents NEVER, not once, hugged one of those children, and there were several times that there was an effort made to hold the child at arm's length. It is an unfair burden to place on the older children to provide for the emotional, and often, educational, needs of the younger ones. The mother only has to be a "buddy" as long as the youngest is nursing??? I know people look at it and say, "Oh, they are all smiling and so well-mannered", but that's b/c they get their butts kicked if they are anything else b/c they have parents who control their every waking moment. They are being *engineered* (some have said they even seem like robots or cult members) to be just like their parents and keep cranking them out until the mother dies or her uterus falls out. They are a well-oiled publicity machine and I hope the children have the chance to escape that environment and see what the rest of the world is like. To my knowledge there has been no mention of college for any of them...

Besides the TV show, how does this family make money? I haven't yet seen the father go to work :confused3 . I'm sure he does, I'm just not sure what he does?

Its just downright creepy!! That poor girl that gets stuck on laundry duty does 10 loads A DAY! When does she have time for school or any fun?? All the girls are in one room and all the boys in the other..no where to go for privacy and no real space to call their own...I got a kick out of them saying "moms kitchen" has this or that when in fact one girl cooks breakfast, one girl cooks lunch and one girl cooks dinner...each kid does more work than mom whos only job I guess is to get pregnant and have babies to then pass on to the older kids. The father said he bought 20 acres so each kid could build a house for their familes on the same property...their poor husbands and wirves!! Seems like they are just waiting for the kids to get married, have babies and add more people to their cult!

You keep saying that he is a failed politician... According to the news article that YOU linked to, he is a former state Representative. This means that he has not lost all of his runs for office, as you imply by saying this.

I did a search on Google and one article I read said that he is a real estate businessman. Their website mentions a few well-placed investments. They live their life debt-free so that "mansion" is Paid In Full!

From what I understand, they had a used car dealership early on and then have been making real estate investments. Jim Bob (save me :sad2: ) was actually a state representative for awhile (which I'm sure is why their website is red, white, and blue and they are pushing for a lot of TV publicity...betcha he's going to run for senator again.)

They did mention this on the show. It is how he found the land to build on.

Who do you supposed paid for the new house? The cost of the designer alone couldn't have been cheap plus they got all new furniture, etc.

Also, I thought the one kitchen was understandable with two of each appliance, but what was the deal with the industrial sized one? I mean, there are only 18 of them...they're not running a restaraunt for hundreds of people each night. (yes I know 18 is a lot but still...)

And...if you were building a new house for 18 people, why on earth would you only have 3 bedrooms??? That 17 year old is sharing a room with the 6 year old and so on!

They have a lady who comes in twice a week to help do the laundry. Check out their website... it's quite interesting. http://www.duggarfamily.com/

They paid cash for their house... built it as they could pay for it.

My husband wants an industrial sized oven and we only have four in our family.

I agree with the last statement - I would have 4 rooms. One for the boys, one for the girls, one for mom and dad, and one for a nursery and nanny! :lmao:

Out of morbid curiosity, I decided to watch the show on TLC tonight and all I have to say is I feel SO sorry for those children. Talk about culture shock when they move out into the real world.
