The Duggars family TV show premieres this Sat.

These conservative folks deserve tolerance like anyone else. I always love to sit back and see society attack conservatives because it is usually the same folks who'd march for tolerance and freedom from judgment, etc. The hypocrisy astounds me. Let these folks be weird. Let them love their kids, teach them well, and spend all their time together. If that's weird, I'm sure they are glad they are not normal!

I am a Christian and I home school. That said, you'd never pick me out of a crowd as being any different from the rest of you. If I were more domestic, if I could cook ANYTHING well and if I could sew even a button back on, I'd probably be more right of center. Sadly, I have no talents in any of these areas! I blend in fine but standing out is not a crime. Diversity should be admired, not just for liberals with alternative lifestyles. Diversity should include those on the far right too.

Who said anything about what side of the political fence they were on? If they were a Pagan hippie family with 16 kids living out of a school bus, but otherwise raising their kids in the same manner as the Duggars, they would be criticized just as much.

This is not a political or religious issue.

But since you are so tolerant of diversity -if the Duggar family worshipped Satan, would you be defending them from criticism?

I'll check it out! Thanks!

Their normal may seem abnormal to you, but that is life huh? ;) There is no doubt that the kids are loved, and cared for. Even though there can be some hurdles to overcome being raised in a more restricted environment; such an environment usually produces confident, productive, secure kids.

Okay everything else aside....I'm curious as to the possible physical ramifications of 16 pregnancies/births?
It's not really my business but I really do wonder if there is a limit on how much a body can endure.

chobie, at least if they were pagans or satan worshippers I'd be a mite less concerned for one of their children when he/she heads out into the real world. Their religion doesn't bother me as such, its the insularity that concerns me. They're being taught such a narrow view of the world. I believe its a parent's job to teach their children about the whole world. And I'm homeschooling my child at present!

Yeah, at what point does her uterus say "I had it; I'm out of here" and then drop right out of her body?

I have this vision of her dragging her uterus behind her in a wagon....

FTR, I think homeschooling is a legitimate choice. I could not do it, because I can't teach and I was never good at math and I think math is a very important subject to master. And most home schooling kids wind up in school at some point even if its just to take some classes like PE or band. And most homeschoolers network with many other homeschoolers, whereas the Duggars only associate one other big family --at least according the the first show on them.

I don't have these talents either! I sure wish I did! Your sentence about a crowd; that's what stands out about this family for me - I don't know if their children are able to socialize with a crowd. Obviously I only "know" them through the media and the media taints the way we see things through editing... but could these kids function in a crowd? And by a crowd, I mean outside of their own home.

After 16 kids, she probably does.

Those kids better smile for the camera or no tatertot casserole for them!

Nope - her kids would be pulling that wagon for her with smiles on. :rotfl2:

Seriously though, for the those who homeschool - I see nothing wrong with that. Sometimes I wish I could do it (and I have a teaching degree).

I also feel that children should be children. Yes, my dd goes to public school, takes dance lessons, plays cello, but she does it with children of various religions, races, etc. The Duggars - from what it seems to me - doesn't interact with other people, unless their lifestyle is that of their own. Seems too "inner circle" for me.

One last thing, wanting to grow up and be a mom was something I always wanted to do, but those poor girls - nothing else seems like an option for them.

Oh, I can just see it --"Who wants to be the buddy for mommy's uterus today?"

No, I think you're one behind!!! I think we are waiting on #16 now....

that's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure. Since this isn't a "reality" show in real time, maybe they're working on #17 by now.

I think one of my (many) issues with the way the Duggar's raise their children is that they are not taught to be free thinkers
I don't think free-thinking is a skill that the Duggars value. I don't want people to tell me that I should teach my children things with which I don't agree; therefore, I shouldn't tell them that they're wrong to teach their children to follow in their footsteps.

I do agree that the kids will have some trouble finding "a place" in the real world when they're older, but they're not my children and it's not my place to say they're wrong.
