Trip Report The Dry Heat Expedition (Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Disneyland)--UPDATE 6/12 (KSC and DTD)

I still have not looked at my photos.

Germany is beautiful and worth a visit.

Love the recap for the year.

Happy New year

Great 2014 recap posts! :thumbsup2

I can't believe how many states Drew has already been to! :faint: Impressive!

Happy New Year! :goodvibes

What a great recap! Now we know why it has taken so long for you to post updates on this TR. You are actually having a life! Good for you!

Well, it wasn't your fault!

No, But it stinks for the kids and that makes me sad. :worried: Glad they had many great experiences. :goodvibes

And I'm not sure I want to know all the nasty things you find in the pool.

Merry Christmas and happy New Year!

You don't........ and I won't tell you so you keep going swimming. :) Just remember chlorine kills most everything and I do know and still go swimming. :rotfl:

$13.00 for the GW bridge!!!!!!! :scared1::scared1: I had to look it up and yup it was $3.00 ( according to a website I found) I remembered $3.50 in quarters for the toll booths.

Guess what - it went up to $14.00 in Dec and will be $15.00 Dec 2015.
:scared1:
The amount of money it costs just to get out of Jersey. :rotfl2:

Kids, get in the car, we’re going to Taco Bell!
:lmao::lmao:

At one time, the public was allowed to climb up to see them, but damage to the dwellings caused that practice to be discontinued in 1951.
It's kinda nice to know that people in the 'olden days' were just as disrespectful as the jerks of 'now a days'

It’s probably just as well. I can’t imagine what my kids would have done to the place.
Cleaned it up? :rolleyes1

The kids have their Junior Ranger booklets and are trying to get as much information as they can from the small exhibits inside to fill out the pages without actually having to stand there and read the whole display.
Smart kids! :rotfl:

We’re ready to get on the trail and see the dwellings. Since we’re back in the desert and it’s just about 3:00, the temperatures have reached nuclear detonation levels outside, so this will be a quick trip. Luckily, it’s a short trail.
Who was in charge of the timing? I bet it wasn't Julie. popcorn::

IMG_6403.JPG
That is so cool! Do the houses face east? North? All different directions? Do they have internet?

I present to you…The Poop Face.

IMG_6406.JPG
I've seen that face before.

3:30 p.m.—On the road again. It must be dry out there in the desert. There’s a random forest fire on a distant slope:

IMG_6414.JPG
smokey-grand-marshal.jpg

And the rest of the place is decorated in a theme that I can only describe as “porcine”.

IMG_6426.JPG
'Hey kids, lets sit next to the picture of the 2 farmers slaughtering our dinner!' :rotfl2:

:worship: :worship: :worship:

That looks amazing!

Ever have one of those moments where you’re not even trying, but just happen to click the camera shutter at just the right time? This is one of those moments. You’re welcome, Sarah.

IMG_6424.jpg

Don’t worry, that picture will only be saved for a few thousand of your closest friends.
:rotfl::rotfl:

Dave comes along with me to help me check in, and I ask at the front desk about the parking situation.
Did Dave ask where the bathrooms were? :confused3

“We’re completely sold out this weekend,” the clerk says. Uh oh.
Hopefully this isn't foreshadowing.... :sad2:

Enjoy the moment here. Take it all in, and try to—“

“Watch this! Dave! I can do a cannonball!” Scotty shouts. Then he splashes me in the face.
Kids.... gotta love them. :lmao:

Love your family year recap!!!

When you were in Gettysburg you didn't happen to come across a millstone that was dislodged did you? :confused3

We drove across the George Washington Bridge in NY for the first time (usually I avoid the city altogether). After paying the $13 toll, it was probably for the last time.
Next time you will take the Garden State to 284 then go over the Tappen Zee Bridge... Oh, and you need to get an EZ Pass. Not only do you not have to wait in line but you get a discount off each toll. ;)

While in New Haven, we met up with fellow DIS'er Tim (that's nice) and his wonderful family. We had a blast with them while eating at Modern Apizza.

IMG_7350.JPG

IMG_7345.jpg
MMMMMMMMMmmmmm.... I could go for some of that right now.

Thanks again for meeting us!! We had a fun time!

We also stopped at an Italian bakery where Tim had me try something called a sfogliatelle. It's pronounced just like you'd think it would be.

IMG_7355.jpg
Annnnnnnnd.... what cha think?

Gabby & Drew are so much bigger now!

The next day we all went to Boston. We found the Make Way For Ducklings statues in Boston Common.

IMG_7434.JPG
Awwww look at him. How could you ever be upset with baby Drew with a face like that?

And we took a tour of Fenway Park, which was expensive but still cool. We did get a AAA discount there: $1 off our total cost. Gee, thanks, guys.
:rotfl2:

I know the Sox were bad this year but they seemed to have a hard time drawing a crowd. :lmao:

They have a Mickey!

IMG_7516.JPG
At least they have a Mickey, if nothing else.

Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year... I'll try not to text you with random texts from now on... :rolleyes1

Mark, I loved the picture recapture of 2014! Seems like you were able to do many fun things in 2014 and I hope 2015 will be equally fun (and bring more sleep for Drew's parents!!).

And the picture of Drew and Abe had me laughing out loud!! He is such a photogenic baby!! :thumbsup2

Love your recap of your year (even if it did include meeting you know who :lmao::lmao::lmao:). Seriously, you guys had some nice adventures and looks like a lot of fun. I can't believe how big all of the kids have gotten since I met the two boys a couple of years ago.

Hey you...I know you. Maybe you should get over to your TR...it's been awhile since you updated. :lmao::lmao::lmao:
Well, I just uploaded my next set of pictures so I will update tomorrow. I was just catching up on some reports that I've haven't been to since before Christmas.

I was only teasing...I'm sure Mark and Julie were delighted to meet Mel.
I'm sure they were too. :lmao:

Now her husband on the other hand..... :rolleyes1

That's a totally awesome re-cap of the year in pix! WOW! You've had some pretty sick adventures for sure.

We tried! There's always more we want to do, but we're limited by those times when we have to go paycheck-to-paycheck. In the end, we want to give our kids great experiences and as few regrets as possible.:thumbsup2

One close friend, when she walked in to my hospital room after #4 was born said, "Is that the ONLY face you guys can make?!" You guys must be like that too. Kinda one size fits all.

Your kids definitely look alike! I totally get that. I'm just glad my wife is good-looking, because the kids get their cuteness from that side of the family.

Love the photos of Gettysburg! I'd love to visit there someday!

Definitely worth a day trip!

I'd love to hang out with Tim and Melody someday. I'm glad you all had such a great time together. So fun when a shared love turns into something so much more.:goodvibes

That was the 2nd time I'd met Tim and Juliana, and the first time meeting the rest of his family. Really nice, sweet people, despite being Yankees and Giants fans. It's been really cool how the DIS has started some great friendships for us. I love being able to say I have friends across the country (or even overseas!). Someday I hope to meet everyone in person.

Thanks Kathy! Happy new year to you too!

I still have not looked at my photos.

Germany is beautiful and worth a visit.

Love the recap for the year.

Happy New year

Happy new year! I'm sure whenever you review the photos you'll enjoy re-living the trip again.

Great 2014 recap posts! :thumbsup2

I can't believe how many states Drew has already been to! :faint: Impressive!

Happy New Year! :goodvibes

Happy New Year! Of course, Drew won't remember any of this, so we'll have to do it all over again.:thumbsup2

Aw such a fun year for your family!

Happy New Year :goodvibes

Happy New Year Alicia!

What a great recap! Now we know why it has taken so long for you to post updates on this TR. You are actually having a life! Good for you!

We're trying! Feels like we're always limited in some way or another, but we're doing the best we can. I appreciate your encouragement!

Whoa…
I got just a might behind over here.
Time to catch up a bit.

Montezuma Castle National Monument is a small park and an easy stop just a couple of miles off the Interstate between Sedona and Phoenix. It’s also an excuse to get another National Park Passport stamp in our book, which you have realized by now is bordering on a small obsession.

There are worse obsessions.

The entrance fee is $5 per adult, meaning you can add another $10 to our total park admission costs, making it $103 (vs. the $80 cost of the annual pass). $23 in savings! Kids, get in the car, we’re going to Taco Bell!

That’s a whole different type of Montezuma reference…

taco-bell-breakfast-1.jpg

Montezuma Castle is the name given to cliff dwellings discovered in this area. It’s easy to see why they chose that name, since it’s not a castle and Montezuma never set foot here.

Never let facts stand in the way of a good marketing strategy.

At one time, the public was allowed to climb up to see them, but damage to the dwellings caused that practice to be discontinued in 1951. It’s probably just as well. I can’t imagine what my kids would have done to the place.

The “kids”… riiiiight…
That’s exactly who I’d be worried about causing havoc.

Meanwhile, we found Drew’s spitting image in the museum. Can you see the resemblance?

IMG_6401.jpg

Yep…
He looks just like Robin Williams.

Since we’re back in the desert and it’s just about 3:00, the temperatures have reached nuclear detonation levels outside

And not one lead lined refrigerator in sight.

At that point, Drew appears to have an attack of Montezuma’s Revenge.

Shouldn’t have made that run for the boarder.

When it comes time to swear in the kids as Junior Rangers, the volunteer calls over the ranger to do the honors.

“You said they already did the Junior Ranger thing at another park?” he asks. Why yes, they have.

“So they know the drill. It’s the same thing,” Slacker Ranger says.

Ummmm…
OK, I get that maybe he’s in the midst of havin’ a bad life right at this particular moment, but taking it out on kids seems to be the single most wrongheaded way of working through one’s inner demons.

Sad…

It must be dry out there in the desert.

I’m shocked, SHOCKED I tell you.

Anyway, we’re headed for a specific destination for our dinner tonight: Thee Pitts Again BBQ. We’d seen this place on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives a while back.

Odd name… what happened, did one of the original “pits” go solo or something?
Maybe they lost one or two in a divorce settlement.

In any case though the joint certainly sounds promising.

And the rest of the place is decorated in a theme that I can only describe as “porcine”.

And well described indeed…

The waiter takes our orders and then I head to the bathroom for a pit stop. Note the position in the above picture of the baby’s high chair. My seat is right next to him. When I return from the bathroom, there’s a huge spill under the table. It appears baby Drew has managed to get his hands on somebody’s drink that wasn’t placed far enough out of his grasp.

Must have been mightily distracted by either the décor or anticipation of some good Q to make a tenderfoot mistake of that proportion. This certainly ain’t your first rodeo and I’m sure you’ve been thrown by that bull more than once by now.

Food! My 2-meat tray has arrived, and it’s glorious. I got pulled pork (in the back) and beef brisket, with mac-and-cheese and beer-battered steak fries as the sides. It’s all fantastic. This time, the beef is actually the star of the show.

Consider this one added to the list of musts then.

The kids, however, transform this from a mere dessert into a Momentous Occasion©.

They order their very first Deep-Fried Twinkie. I am suddenly overwhelmed with pride. This fatherhood gig is not easy, but I feel now that I must have done something correctly.

<<sniff>> Kind’a gets ya’ right here… don’t it?

“Enjoy this, kids,” I say. “You’re swimming at night in the middle of the Arizona desert. Relatively few people get to do this, and you might never get the chance to do this again. Look up at the stars, and just enjoy the moment here. Take it all in, and try to—“

“Watch this! Dave! I can do a cannonball!” Scotty shouts. Then he splashes me in the face.

Yup, Scotty just happened. But they really are enjoying the moment. They’ll just do the appreciating later.

<<sniff>> Kind’a gets ya’ right here… don’t it?

And they will appreciate it…
later.

Enjoyed the updates from that years other trips and outings as well.
I’ve done more than my fair share of pointless and insensitive commentary already though so as a public service to your far more refined readers…

I think I’ll hush up now.

No, But it stinks for the kids and that makes me sad. :worried: Glad they had many great experiences.

I think we did just fine.:thumbsup2

You don't........ and I won't tell you so you keep going swimming. :) Just remember chlorine kills most everything and I do know and still go swimming.

In this case, I think ignorance is bliss!:rotfl:

$13.00 for the GW bridge!!!!!!! :scared1::scared1: I had to look it up and yup it was $3.00 ( according to a website I found) I remembered $3.50 in quarters for the toll booths.

Guess what - it went up to $14.00 in Dec and will be $15.00 Dec 2015.
:scared1:

:faint: Usually I take the Tappan Zee Bridge. Still a toll, but much better than the GW Bridge. This is what I get for trying something different.

The amount of money it costs just to get out of Jersey.

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl: Exactly!

It's kinda nice to know that people in the 'olden days' were just as disrespectful as the jerks of 'now a days'

As the Good Book says, "there is nothing new under the sun."

Cleaned it up? :rolleyes1

Uh, sure. Let's go with that.

Smart kids!

I wonder where they get it from. :rolleyes1

Who was in charge of the timing? I bet it wasn't Julie. popcorn::

Ok, so they don't get it from my side.

That is so cool! Do the houses face east? North? All different directions? Do they have internet?

I believe they're facing south. No cable, but pretty sweet satellite dishes.

I've seen that face before.

It's funny and terrifying at the same time.

'Hey kids, lets sit next to the picture of the 2 farmers slaughtering our dinner!' :rotfl2:

:rotfl2::rotfl2: That wouldn't bother you, would it?

:worship: :worship: :worship:

That looks amazing!

Gotta love bbq.:thumbsup2

Did Dave ask where the bathrooms were? :confused3

For once...no. I should have bought a lottery ticket.

Hopefully this isn't foreshadowing....

Well...about that...:sad2:

Kids.... gotta love them. :lmao:

Always appreciating the finer things in life.

I had about 3 chapters to catch up on...enjoying it immensely, as always. Gotta love the Drew pictures!

Happy New Year, Mark. Sorry, I missed that update when you posted it.

Drew has certainly had a heck of a first year. And for as little as he sleeps, at least at night, that is quite the feat. :rotfl2::lmao:

You certainly seem to have some great kids. Congratulations to you and Julie. Now if you can just get Drew over that whole night owl thing, you'll be set.

And we've seen Drew's costume... so were you one of the ghostbusters? Or maybe Slimer?

Love your family year recap!!!

Thanks! And here I thought it was totally self-indulgent.

When you were in Gettysburg you didn't happen to come across a millstone that was dislodged did you? :confused3

Um...no...:confused3

Next time you will take the Garden State to 284 then go over the Tappen Zee Bridge... Oh, and you need to get an EZ Pass. Not only do you not have to wait in line but you get a discount off each toll. ;)

That's the way I usually go. Actually, sometimes I take the Palisades Parkway just because it's a prettier drive than the Garden State. Then I take I-684 up to I-84 in CT. That seems to be a less crowded and expensive way to go. But in this case, we were heading to New Haven, so we had to get around NYC somehow. I just wanted to say I'd tried the GWB at least once.

MMMMMMMMMmmmmm.... I could go for some of that right now.

Thanks again for meeting us!! We had a fun time!

So did we! It was great to meet the rest of your family. And the pizza was really good, too.:thumbsup2

Annnnnnnnd.... what cha think?

Good stuff! I'd totally get it again, even if I can't pronounce it.

Gabby & Drew are so much bigger now!

::yes:: It doesn't take long, does it?

Awwww look at him. How could you ever be upset with baby Drew with a face like that?

Well, you can't see that face so well at 3 a.m.

I know the Sox were bad this year but they seemed to have a hard time drawing a crowd. :lmao:

Man, I don't think they EVER have a hard time drawing a crowd. There's a reason we do the tours instead of buying actual game tickets. :faint:

At least they have a Mickey, if nothing else.

Apparently every team does, but they're the only ones that actually have it out for display. They were a gift to all the teams from Disney back when Disney owned the Anaheim Angels and hosted the All-Star game one year.

Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year... I'll try not to text you with random texts from now on... :rolleyes1

That was fun! And since we weren't home, it worked out better than you'd planned.

Mark, I loved the picture recapture of 2014! Seems like you were able to do many fun things in 2014 and I hope 2015 will be equally fun (and bring more sleep for Drew's parents!!).

We'll definitely do our best! Hopefully Julie will get enough sub dates or I'll finally get a promotion so we can have the budget for more fun. As for sleep...I'm starting to think that will never happen.

And the picture of Drew and Abe had me laughing out loud!! He is such a photogenic baby!! :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 We were proud of that one! I'm actually behind the statue holding Drew in place. We hid it pretty well. :rotfl2:

Love your recap of your year (even if it did include meeting you know who :lmao::lmao::lmao:). Seriously, you guys had some nice adventures and looks like a lot of fun. I can't believe how big all of the kids have gotten since I met the two boys a couple of years ago.

Me neither! And I've been with them every day! Time flies, doesn't it?

And yes, I was worried, but we even survived meeting you-know-who.

Who? Melody? :rolleyes1

Uh...yeah, that's it.

Hey you...I know you. Maybe you should get over to your TR...it's been awhile since you updated. :lmao::lmao::lmao:

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

I was only teasing...I'm sure Mark and Julie were delighted to meet Mel.

Exactly. We loved Mel and the kids, and put up with the other putz.

Well, I just uploaded my next set of pictures so I will update tomorrow. I was just catching up on some reports that I've haven't been to since before Christmas.

You too, huh? A lot of that going around.

I'm sure they were too. :lmao:

Now her husband on the other hand..... :rolleyes1

Don't get me started on that guy. :sad2:
