...why Aulani over things like one of the Four Seasons, Fairmonts, or something like the Grand Wailea (Waldorf) on Maui?

I've stayed a few resorts around Hawaii including the Four Seasons - Maui and can compare it to Aulani. It's a very different experience. Four Seasons as you would expect is very luxurious, and the customer service is second to none. They're difficult to compare. As I mentioned in my previous post, I appreciate the Hawaiian focus of Aulani. The Four Seasons is incredible, but you could put that resort on any beach in the world and it would fit in. Other than the lobby being open air, it doesn't carry an overly Hawaiian feel. I should say my DW would probably disagree and slightly prefer the 4S, but if given the chance I'd go back to Aulani.
