My future in-laws have 2 dogs and they both do it. It's definitely gross. :headache: When we dog sit for them, I always get at them to stop, and they usually will.. for about a minute, and then they're chewing again. Yuck.

My one dog does it. It is strange for sure!

I have a male cat that is 9 mos that lays back and then leans forward and sucks on his own belly. His sister also will join him and I think it's just gross! They are just starting to out grow this and I hope it's soon!

I had a weenie dog for 15 years that did this . He made them so sharp and pointy he would almost stab me in bed at night when he burried himself in the covers

Mine don't chew their nails, but one's a paw licker. She can lay there for hours and just lick, lick, lick. Drives me up the wall; I usually just say her name, she gives me an exasperated look and then moves farther away. I can't imagine nail biting, that would be awful!

We own 4 labs and foster a greyhound. Two of the labs chew their nails. I actually can't remember the last time I trimmed their nails because they take care of it themselves. Strange dogs.

I had no idea this was common? its very gross I'm so glad none of the dogs I've owned have done it.. the sound was driving me batty. He's been here for a week tomorrow and this was the first time I've seen/heard him do it..

Sounds like my husband. Can't get him to stop biting his nails either. It is a huge pet peave of mine. I actually have to get up and leave the rooms sometimes because I can feel my blood pressure rising and I don't want to say anything. I don't know why it bothers me, but it does.:confused3

...on the dog topic, can't biting their feet be a sign of an allergy? Seems like I dog sat years ago and their dogs had allergies and wouldn't leave their paws alone.

I have no idea.. pup leaves some time tomorrow night or sunday morning depends on when his owner gets back from the beach and we get home from his company picnic (everyone cross their fingers for no rain tomorrow!)

My Golden does it, as well as lick ,lick, lick her paws;)

For my dog, I am pretety sure the licking and biting and biting nails is part of her allergies.

Our St Bernard does this and I do think it is related to her allergies because she doesn't do it ALL the time. Recently she has been doing it a lot and this is the time of year when she is generally itchy all over. We have tried all types of foods, drugs, etc, and nothing seems to touch it. It should pass when the seasons change.

Yes, nail biting/paw licking is usually a sign of allergies. Our dog does this when her allergies are acting up, like this time of the year.

Kody (the Lab/Weimeraner mix that my roommate owns) does the same thing. He does it badly enough that he has a sore on top of his foot that keeps bleeding, though. I keep taking care of it when it opens back up and he seems to appreciate that (licks my face while I'm doing it and then runs around or rolls around on the bed after I'm done) but I wish we could get him to stop chewing on his paws. For those who said something about allergies, he does have allergies as well...he is constantly sneezing.

My pugs do this too...and 2 of them are also paw lickers...DRIVES ME UP A WALL...Usually saying their name stops it, but some days I can say their name 10-15 times....I have also heard they do it out of boredom
