Is the drive mechanically dead? Or just can't access the data due to corruption or something?

I think the PS went out on it, but Im not sure. When i plug it it, the light flashes and it makes a weird noise about once a second. The drive shows up under the hardware tab, but does not show up under my computer.

Yeah... sounds like mechanical failure. Not much can be done with that unless you send it off to be recovered. I can usually get back stuff if it's just bad sectors or boot record gets corrupt. Sorry for your luck my friend.

Spindle bearing if a screeching sound (higher pitch) or head crash is lower pitch scrap, or head parking If a clicking sound...at least the sounds from my experience. HDs are pretty neat devices. I have been lucky to see the whole mfg process a few times over past 15 years.
