Ok, so lets move on...
Our first dinner in The World on this trip was a new one for us. We have never been to California Grill. I have to admit, I was a bit discouraged but the reputation it has. Not becasue of the food but from the image I guess I had made up in my head from reading various reviews and such. We had gone back to the room after lunch and went swimming for a while and then got dressed for dinner...
...and headed over to The Contemporary for our 9pm ADR. When I booked this meal I thought Wishes was at 9pm but it ended up being at 8pm. It did not end up mattering because as it got closer to our trip day, I began to see more and more posts about viewing Wishes from California Grill and they were saying you needed to have an earlier ARD because people were not going to leave during Wishes...so if your ADR was at 9pm and so was Wishes, you most likely were not going to see Wishes from California Grill. Now, we did not have a lot of choice by the time I was reserving so it did not really matter either way. We did arrive about 7:45pm becasue we love the Contemporary and wanted to explore the shops. Sortly after we arrived, we heard Wishes starting so we went to the window to watch...that is how we found out the time had been changed. So we went shopping and Tyler starts saying his chect hurts. Like he cannot breathe...and he wants to sit down. So now I am gettigna little worried. I mean the kid is in perfect health generally. He does take an allergy medicine on a regular basis for seasonal stuff but nothing else....except for our sicknesses from the proir week or so. So we are sitting int he center of the COntemporary and I am grilling him on what he feels like and making sure he knows how important it is that he tell me everything he is feeling. We sat for a little while and then he said he felt a little better and we moved downstairs to check in early for our ADR. It was about 8:30pm. The kids were confised becasue we were going down...didn't I tell them we were eating on the top of the Contemporary??? We checked in and were told we could either wat down there or go up and wait. We were the only ones down there. We sat for a few minutes and then the kids decided the wanted to go up. Then they wanted to know why the elevator did not have a bunch of buttons for all the floors in it. So we arrive upstairs to this...
And a ton, and I do mean ton, of people! There were people everywhere. I'd really like to have an early ADR here just so I could see what the place really looks like...there were peopel everywhere. There were people sitting in an area that I can only assume is a lounge area drinking drinks, there were people walking around waiting for their buzzers to buzz, and there were people SITTING ON THE FLOOR IN THE RESTAURANT!!!! I couldn't believe it! Why were people sitting on the floor in one of the highest class of restaurants in The World???? I felt weird...like I should not be up there and we almost went back down. A hostess told us we could go down by the doors and look out over the castle but we could not see much so we just waited near the elevators. I have to say, the restaurant is not at all what I pictures in my head. It is basically a big open room. Where you come into it is in the middle of the room, sort of. It appears a lounge area is right there too...but it is all open and surrounded by windows. Just not the vision in my head. Shortly after we got up there people started leaving...obviously there waiting out Wishes. And to my surprise, A LOT of them were not dressed as I think they should have been to be eating there. It doesn't ruin anythign for us but rules are rules and they should be followed. We actually enjoyed getting dressed up a little for meals. So near 9pm we were seated. In a world of our own...this was our view...
SCORE! We were the very front most table in the place and it would have been the very best table in the house for Wishes viewing...it was pretty darned neat just for castle gazing. And a little wile later for the Electric Water Pageant. It was awesome!
See, Tyler looks like he does not feel well still.
Randall was or waiter. He was really good with the kids. We ordered our usual drinks (two diet cokes and a regular coke). And Randall brought bread too.
We were again asked to see our room key to verify which dining plan we were on. Not a big deal but a little inconvienent. We ordered our appetizers first. Signature restaurants tend to have open kid's menus rather than set menus but the kids did not really find much that overjoyed them so they both orgered the Romaine Salad...
With croutons and dressing on the side. they both ae a little of it. I had the Crab Salad...
It was good. Not the best appetizer I have ever had but far from the worst! And the oranges with the crab was different but really, really a great combination! I was pleased with my choice but I might be swayed into something else next time...and there will be a next time!
For entrees, Skye had the house made mac & cheese...she declared it
the best mac & cheese evah!
I tasted it and it was really very good. It is in a white sauce and for a minute I though my little freak was going to take issue with it but she loved it and even after she said she was full still kept taking bites...she said she just could not help it!
Tyler surprised me and ordered the chicken breast. Now, he does eat chicken breast but normally would not order it without being coaxed into it. And after his drama this evening, I was prepared to let him order anything he wanted just so he could eat. I thought maybe the combination of not feeling well for a while coupled with the fact that we had only really eaten one meal today (and that nugget meal at Captain's grill was kind of small for him)...of, I just had dejavue (or however you spell it), freaky! So anyway, he ordered the kid's chicken breast.
It comes with potatoes but being the wierdo he is, he wouldn't touch them. He did finish all the chicken and said it was really good. I tasted his potatoes and they were good, not to dry. Skye ate some too. By the way, he did not feel bad again so maybe it was just being hungry.
I had the filet with mashed potatoes and green beans...
It was a perfect medium rare. And the potatoes were great! Even the green beans were wonderful! I was very happy with our food!
All this time our glasses were full and we were checked on just enough. For dessert the kids ordered the Sushi Plate...
They were thrilled with it when it was brought out. It is rice krispy treat wrapped in fruit roll up with swedish fish in and on it to look like sushi. it was really cute and different. They ate all the fish off the top and maybe one piece and Randall wrapped the rest up to take with us.
I had The Original which is butterscotch creme brule with banans on the top, two different banana cakes.
It was good. Not the best but not the worst by any means!
All this time the place was getting quieter and quieter...with less and less people present. It was nice once it was not as crowded. We were there for about an hour and fourty-five minutes. And it did not seem like that long at all. We all loved our view and if I could guarantee being able to watch the castle change colors from this vantage I would eat here every day. It woudl be nice if they had some better kid appetizers but otherwise we loved all the choices. I think I would try a different appetizer and dessert next time but not because they were not good...I just suspect there is something there that I would like better. I woudl love to get in at the right time to get this table and a Wishes show...what are the chances? Not very good if you are me but a girl can dream right?
Our bill was $114.16 and we left a $22.00 tip. We really had a great meal and a great first night in The World!!!!
We cannot wait to return!!!
