The Corelle thread got me thinking - what do you call pasta bowls and what do you use them for?

Ok. You can tell I'm bored today. I'm home sick.

I just looked up "Plowl" (what my young adult kids call these) and it's in the urban dictionary. It says it's a combination of a plate and a bowl - typically meant for children because it's easier to eat from! LOL! No wonder I like them so much.

I do feel very hip now, knowing I use something regularly that's in the urban dictionary.

Pasta bowls are not deep, at least not where I live. We have these plain white Corelle ones, which are 8.5 inches wide and 1.5 inches deep.

We have matching serving bowls, which are 10.25 inches wide and 3 inches deep, and small bowls we use for side salads that are 5.5 inches wide and 1.25 inches deep.

We use the pasta bowls for pasta, like spaghetti, baked ziti, lasagne, etc. We also use them for meals that tend to be on the juicy side, like pot roast with potatoes, carrots, and onions cooked alongside.

These are the size of the ones I have. We call them soup plates. I bought them as a set of 4, with a larger serving bowl. I think they are supposed to be for pasta but don't really remember; I've had them for probably 25 years or more.

You're even more hip than me! I do remember the term "soup plates" though. I had forgotten. Makes sense. My husband wondered why we were using these bowls for soup because I usually use the cereal bowls, and I told him it was hot outside so I didn't want the soup to stay so hot.

We have Pfaltzgraff Rio, and we have two bowls. At home we call them just the big bowls (versus cereal bowls, soup mugs, small bowls, and rimmed salad bowls that we also have).

We use them for pasta, soup, salad, bread, vegetables, chip/dip, whatever. They're pretty useful! This is the pattern. They're about 10" in diameter and 3" high.

I miss the pfaltzgraff outlet I used to live near their stuff is durable! I still have 2 or 3 of their little 'airline dishes'.

Pasta bowls. Love them. We use for pasta, salads, casserole type food etc. Used last night for stuffed peppers. They really do make eating "mixed" stuff easier.

We use those, have for years. Love them for anything that might be a little runny. Ours are melamine and do not match the rest of our dishes. They're the only approved dish if we're eating in the living room instead of dining room.

I wish my set had come with this type of bowl/plate - would use it for pasta meals. I have the small bowl that is good for soup or cereal. This is probably why I never bothered to actual use this "extra" set over the years. Did not even know I had this option when I bought mine many, many years ago (25/30 plus years).

Since I just purchased some. technically they are officially meal bowls. I do end up calling them pasta bowls though. Mostly using for pasta or something with a sauce that will run on a plate or salads.

We eat pasta off of plates. Because it is 2 of us use a lot of paper goods.

It's a bowl nothing else is used for the name. My sister-in-law does have a more shallow but wider bowl compared to us that she uses which is probably the newer style. It's not our style personally.

For us since our wedding 12 yrs ago we use the Noritake bowls



They are used for pasta, soup, salad, etc. We also have the smaller plate, dinner plate and mug as part of each color set (I wanted multiple colors) though we don't use them unless we have guests over. We use other plates and mugs for everyday usage.

I have these Corelle bowls and love them... 28 oz, nice and deep, and they stack nicely

We use them for cereal, soups, pasta like Mac n Cheese... pretty much whatever and they are just called bowls

I have a few of those, I think maybe from Crate & barrel? I don't call them anything. We don't use them for pasta, but I use them when I make a big dinner salad, such as with chicken and hard boiled egg.
