Ok, so now Governor Rendell is saying that Obama did contact the McCain camp this morning requesting that they form a set of joint principles to submit to Congress, but not to suspend the campaigns or debates.

Obama's camp is saying no! We can con't to work on the bailout and show up on Friday. The Pres. debate commission is saying no.

The Obama campaign said Obama had called McCain around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to propose that they issue a joint statement in support of a package to help fix the economy as soon as possible. McCain called back six hours later and agreed to the idea of the statement, the Obama campaign said. McCain's statement was issued to the media a few minutes later.

The way I take it Obama called about making "a joint statement" and McCain one-upped him. Am I on glue or is this how many of you are taking it? Talking and doing are not the same thing. It's like this one event is a mini glimpse at this whole election.

That's my interpretation of what I'm hearing on the news as well. Obama called to talk about forming a joint statement about what needs to be done, and McCain agreed. Then McCain decided to suspend his campaign temporarily to go back to Washington and participate in the process, and so far Obama's campaign has said they have no comment and are formulating their response. If it was his idea...why would they be formulating their response hours later???

I think where we're at right now is that Obama is pissed because McCain wasn't satisfied with just issuing a joint statement. McCain has been talking to members on the hill since last night and evaluating the situation and determined the bill won't pass. He thinks that both of them would have more of an impact by being in Washington doing their jobs. As far as the debate, the McCain camp said it is still a possibility, but has put resolving this crisis as a priority above the debate. It is really not in McCain's personal interest to postpone it, because this was the one in which he has the definitive advantage on foreign policy.

I think they may have talked about a joint statement, but McCain decided it was more important to head back to DC and wants O to go too, then they can go back to campaigning. From what has been reported O's top staff is saying Thurs. and Friday they can work and then go to the debates. Though I have not heard and I may have missed it anyone from McCain's camp confirm that they discussed a joint statement.
