The "big drop" sensation: what does it feel like to you?

Thanks for everyone's responses so far. It's nice to know I am not alone!!

Some of the responses had new reactions that I have never felt, like the having trouble breathing thing. That really stinks for you guys that suffer from it.

I have been on ToT (never again) and am thinking about maybe doing EE again when I go in August. I will probably do RnRC for the first time since I keep reading that there are no drops on it. Also SPACE MOUNTAIN for the FIRST TIME as well! Wish me luck! Are the drops on Space Mountain similar to PotC or BTMRR? Those I can handle....

Space and RnRc are great and don't have any real drops mainly like BTMRR.
My daughter just road EE and RnRc for her first time this trip and hates drops also. She went on RnRc a total of 8 times in a row and EE 4 times in a row. She also loves Space Mountain.

I feel like I was kicked in my stomach and I can't catch my breath (my brother used to do this to me when I was a kid ). It is only for a second but during that second I am teriffied. I can do EE but after Splash I was crying and so was my DD, she doesn't like it either. But I am glad I did it so I can at least say I did it. I have yet to try ToT. I did one of those kiddy drop things that only went 20 feet in the air at a local amusement park and about died so I don't think I can handle ToT. :rotfl:

This is what it's like for me too. I've never been on Splash (though I'd love to) because of this. I get this feeling when going down the drop in Pirates. I didn't realize why I disliked it until I read a post here that said to either exhale slowly or scream going down the drop and you don't get as much of that funny feeling. I decided to try that on Pirates. I opened my mouth, and couldn't scream or even breathe out. It feels like when a gust of wind hits you in your face and takes your breath away. I've found that going down drops backwards solves this problem (as proven on Kali). If only I could go down Splash backwards!

I went on Space Mountain for the first time last year and it was fine - no big drops. The worst part is that you can't see what's coming (although in a way that's probably a good thing too)! I'll be going on it again in July!

I hate it too. I always say I don't like that feeling in my stomach from drops. A word of warning though, I didn't know you could get that feeling from a takeoff. I wasn't afraid of Rockin Roller Coaster because there are no "big" hills but the take off gave me that same feeling. Maybe a little worse. :scared1: After the beginning I was fine, but that take off......:upsidedow

IWhen i'm actually going down a drop i get this horrible 'rush' feeling all over my body - like i'm going to fall out of my skin? & i feel like i can't breathe
I feel the exact same way! It's a weird feeling, almost feels like I'm going to die. And sometimes my stomach actually hurts too, like I've been punched. I don't know which feeling is worse!

I tried the screaming thing and it works for me, when I remember to do it! I pretty much scream throughout BTM. Not that it's scary or anything, I just can breathe better :rotfl:

That's interesting about riding backwards. On Kali I didn't know there was a drop, or I wouldn't have went on it! I saw the drop coming but couldn't tell how bad it was, as I had my back to it. I hoped for the worst and felt NOTHING. A few months later, I find out the drop is actually pretty big. Go figure. I don't know if it's because I was going down backwards or because it's not as steep, but I felt nothing there.

I would LOVE to go on Splash, but I'm scared to death of the drop. I only went once, when I was 9, and I didn't want to go even then. I was so scared, but my mom made me go. I seriously contemplated getting out of the log many times before the big drop. I asked my mom throughout the ride, as I passed the parts where you could potentially exit the log, if I could exit as I really did not want to go down the big drop.

I know it's only a few seconds...and if it's not worse than Pirates, just slightly longer, I could take it, now that I know some coping skills. But from what I remember it was horrible, and I'm not willing to find out if I remember it right or not. At least not yet, hopefully one day I'll be brave enough to try it.

This is my favorite feeling EVER!! Of course, that might make me weird, but this is also coming from someone who LOVES the hiccups. Anywho...to me, it's a huge dose of adrenaline and I do feel all tingly and revved up. When I drop, it definitely makes my stomach tickle a bit and I just love the weightless feeling too.

I think it's so magical!

Same with me!! I LOVE the feeling of drops, like on Splash Mt. and Tower of terror. It tickles my tummy and like you said, I feel weightless and it just makes me laugh and smile.
But on the contrary, I HATE roller coasters because I get motion sickness from them, so no longer can I ride things like Space Mountain. So, everyone reacts differently.

I never had a problem with drops until when I was about 10 I distinctly remember getting SCARED to death of the vultures right before the drop on Splash. Ever since then, I refused to go on rides with drops. I just got incredibly tense and anxious, and had that weird tummy feeling.

My last trip, my BF forced me to ride Splash because it was his first time at the parks. He got me to ride it like four or five times, and every time I got that really really tense feeling. My jaw clenches and all my muscles tighten up. I just count backwards from 5 when we start dropping in my head to help me get over it. I think it's all in my head. I wish I had bought one of the pictures from the ride....my face really tells it all!! :lmao:

I agree with the shaking, weak, and nerves shot description. It feels like I've had a super stressful experience...and not good stress either.

I feel like I'm having a major panic attack. I feel like I'm going to vomit and then pass out. I have a major claustrophobia issue, and the feeling of being trapped in those little cars and being out of control over the drops sends me over the edge. No one gets it. But it is a very major fear of mine. I can't even hardly fly. I feel sick just thinking about it. Dh thought if I just rode them, I'd be OK, but nope. I got sick on Space Mountain. Now I'm more afraid than ever.

Quick update. I went on EE today for the first time ever after YEARS of walking by it time after time. Which I know is crazy since I *live* here. My DH was begging me not to do it since he's seen my reaction to coasters.

It wasn't bad at all. :goodvibes The backwards part was intense but I only felt pushed into my seat. Not that awful tummy feeling. I'm adding it to my list of coasters that I will ride!

Next is Space Mountain. But after that I think I'm done. I know I can't ride Splash (tried it) or TOT (won't even think about trying it). My DH doesn't like RnRC so I don't care about that one.

But to get myself back on topic: EE = no evil tummy vibes!! :thumbsup2

It is worst than pirates by far. I seriously could not walk, talk or even comprehend what was going on aroung me for a few seconds after it and tears just started streaming down my face. I got myself together afterwards but it was rough. I have been on many roller coasters when I was younger and had something to prove but nothing ever made me feel like Splash did.

Haven't decided if I like the sensation. I only recently became a "thrill ride person". I won't do Splash because I don't like to get wet, and Space Mountain was closed when I was there last weekend, so I couldn't try that, but I will next time. I did ToT and RnRc for the first time last Sat and loved them both. I LOVE the take off on RnRc. I love fast, so I just scream woo hoo at the takeoff, something about the combo of the speed and music. What I don't like is the drop on pirates! Go figure. But what I hate most is the dark entry and being packed into the entry at Haunted Mansion! Now THAT is my ToT!!! :)

Sensation: I am afraid of drops. It feels like a really really really really intense org#sm to me. But since it only lasts for seconds, I have put up with it to ride Splash and a few roller coasters.

Solution: I have found that if I bend over at the waist when the drop begins, if lessens the intensity. Because of this I don't ride any roller coasters that limit my upper body movement.

Question: Do the following rides have drops that give an intense sensation:
EE, RnR, and Space (I rode it once, a long time ago, I have forgotten.)
I would love to ride them.

Just a thought - atp may be thinking of the DL Pirates? Where the drop is MUCH longer and almost as bad as Splash? But yes - Splash is MUCH worse than pirates at WDW. Not only is there the huge drop at the end there are a couple drops inside that feel worse than Pirates.

That said - even if you hate drops it is worth riding once to see the inside. It is a beautiful ride. (Hey- I've even ridden 3 times in the past almost 20 years it has been open! :lmao:) I would plan to ride at the end of the night or before you head out for a break.

I'm a coaster junkie and love a good drop. The sensation I get in my stomach is a fluttering, almost tickling, sensation. It's a feeling I've always enjoyed, I'm not sure if I can explain how. I suppose it just kicks my adrenaline and endrophines into overdrive and euphoria fills my body.

Is that a bad thing? :D

I hate big drops because of that feeling you get in your stomach (and for me, all over my body), so I often avoid rides with it. However, that doesn't seem to be a sufficient explanation to some people. I find that if I say it gives me a headache, makes me nauseous, jostles me around too much - that seems to work and they leave me alone. However, if I just say I don't like the big drop sensation, I am just considered wimpy. Not a big deal, just something I thought would be interesting to discuss!

All of you out there who also hate big drops, what does it feel like to you? I have a hard time explaining the sensation, all I know is that after riding EE, my nerves were shot all over my body and I felt weak. I'd like a better way to explain it, if any of you have one.

On the flip side, to those who love big drops, what does it feel like to you?

Here's a tip for those who hate big drops: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=590442&highlight=big+drop

Heaven:woohoo:

LOL, I see your point. But it is a little too intense for me.

I can only speak for EE, as i haven't ridden the other two. I do remember being surprised at how intense the final drop was on EE and that the feeling started sooner than I expected. I saw the drop coming and expected to feel the stomach drop after we went over the crest but it was sooner than that. However, my experience could have been due to the fact that I had prepared myself by saying it was only 80ft and curved at the bottom and that is not as bad, so my expectations were lower. It ended up kind of wrecking me for the rest of the day.

That being said, I am still thinking about trying it again next time I go to WDW. :)

I did not know that! I will be trying RnR for the first time in August. Thanks for letting me know!
