As the title says I am looking for the best at home hair dye. And I have a problem, My hair is so dark almost black but not and I always seem to get too dark and I want a nice chestnut brown or a tad darker. A very vibrant and muti highs and lows. If this doesn't make sense ask please. and Thank you! :goodvibes

Do you have a Sally Beauty Supply near? That's where I used to go when I dyed mine at home. I always used the Liquid Loreal brand from there. I loved that stuff. Now, I go to my hairdresser to have it done because I get numerous colors and different things done to it way beyond my level of just being able to do one color at a time. If you have a Sally's near you, I would try there. The people who work at ours are always very helpful! Good luck, I loved my dark hair when I had it, but it was a PAIN to get it lighter.

YES it is a pain been there done that. i don't necessarily want it lighter just not so flat!

I used to have the same problem. I wanted a nice medium brown but it it always came out more of a dark walnut brown and took a while to fade to the desired color. This was while using professional color (Matrix). Now I use Garnier Fructis and the color is very even and is the correct color from day one.

I found a brand a few weeks ago that I thought was pretty neat. Of course, I can't recall the name of it, but it came with everything in it. They're all seperated into three connected packets that you just cut open, fold over each other, and put on. I was going from a medium dark color to a slightly darker red tone, so I'm not sure how it would work in reverse.

ETA: the brand is Umberto U Color Italian Demi Color. i purchased it at a hair supply store (much like Sally's but smaller)

I use Perfect 10 (Clairol, I think). I've always had a problem with home colors fading and looking so orangey or fake, but this color has been the best for me.

Nothing beats a salon color, of course, but in a pinch I love Perfect 10.

Thanks Ladies that was really helpful. I'm going to check them out. :goodvibes

I swear by Loreal Feria...I've used all sorts of colors of theirs: reds, browns, blondes and always had great results.

I wondered about that brand thanks for the input. :goodvibes

I use Feria as well with great results. I wouldn't say it's the best brand, because that's the only brand I ever use..but it works for me (I started out going brown to blonde and did that professionally, and have been doing touchups at home with this for several years now).

I was the same but with blonde haor, I swear by L'Oreal products. I have never had any problem with tone and the y leave my hair shiny & soft.

I have gone from blonde to a bright auburn so have to do alot of maintenance and L'Oreal has been perfect. I have no hair damage even with alot of use.

I use preference by Loreal - it is my favorite - it has the preconditioner for the tips of your hair - plus the conditioner to apply after dying...

I have used it dozens of times and never had any problems....

I use Feria as well; they make a color that's exactly what I'm looking for and I surely can't afford a salon coloring :( In fact, when my DSister goes to have her hair done she asks me to join her so she can tell her hairdresser "Can you make my hair THIS color?" pointing at me. :) They never can, heh. Her hair's COMPLETELY different than mine; she got dad's and I got mom's. I've suggested she try the Feria before, but she's apparently not brave enough to try a home color. :goodvibes

I use Garnier. I have medium brown hair and like to brighten it up just a little bit and go for a golden brown color.
