After a horrendous 6 weeks at work, end of financial year coupled with a new group computer system, I decided that "we" needed a short break.

Disneyland Paris seemed inviting, as we hadn't been there since the new park opened, so the excercise of pricing our trip started.

Airmiles were to be used for the flights from Edinburgh to CDG, something like 20 euros for the transfer each and a quote of around £700 for 2 nights in the Disneyland Hotel. Expensive but very nice.

So including air tax, etc, total bill without spending money around £800 - 850.

About to push the button and it suddenly struck me. £ 800 for 3 days 2 nights at DLP ......

Back onto the net with a new purpose. The new plan was Florida - leave Edinburgh wed night down to Gatwick, overnight in a hotel, fly out thurs morning, arrive thurs afternoon, all day fri, sat, sun and most of mon, leaving last flight mon night, getting into Gatwick tues morning and back to Edinburgh tues lunchtime.

Virgin - over £ 1000 for 2 flights :( Expedia - nothing reasonable direct (no time for any changes) :( Airnet - same as expedia :(

The new plan was failing ... EBookers - 2 BA flights on the correct dates £ 620 :) Virgin £ 880 :(

New plan - phone the flying club and plead !! Virgin frequent flier... BA £ 620 .... don't want to go BA.... can Virgin match it.

Didn't even get into my full stride when the nice young lady said "You have enough miles for 2 free economy flights, Do you want to use them ?" :)

On the phone to DVC. 4 nights at Villas @ Wilderness Lodge - no problem.

Booked the car hire thro Florida car hire £ 165 and shuttles and Gatwick hotel thro airmiles £105 for Le Meridian and £ 40 ish for flight taxes.

So...............................

Flying down to Gatwick courtesy of Airmiles, staying at Le Meridian and the out on Virgin. Car hire from Dollar, 5 days , 4 nights in the Villas @ Wilderness Lodge, a grand total of ....

£ 300 for the 2 of us :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

4 weeks today .:)

That's a nice little saving :)

We just worked out how much we have saved going the DIY route. With our AP discounts we have saved over £900 on the Virgin Holidays package price for 14 nights at POR in August :)

Congratulations. You can save yourself a small fortune by booking it yourself.

A long weekend in Orlando - now that's what I call style! Love to hear when you get back if you think the hassle of the long distance travelling was worth it for nearly fours day's of bliss.

Regards

Rob

Wow, great saving! Not sure I could fly all that way for a few days, but hey, good for you for giving it a try! Would love to hear how it goes!

Just curious, but how many Air Miles do you need for 2 return flights to Florida then??:D

All the best!
Allie.

I think the regular rate for a London-Orlando return is 8,600 Airmiles or 50,000 BA Miles. There are discounted rates during off-season and both schemes offer a part-cash, part-miles rate.

Rob

or 80,000 Virgin Flying Club miles for 2 economy tickets.

David :D

David, is that the regular rate or a discounted rate? I have almost 40,000 Virgin miles which are just sitting there doing nothing at the moment. If I could use that to get one free flight to Orlando it might make our next visit a bit cheaper.

Regards

Rob

Rob its the regular rate.

Virgin Atlantic 30000 Reward:
Virgin Atlantic LGW-MCO Economy Companion Return

Virgin Atlantic 35000 Reward:
Virgin Atlantic LGW-MCO Economy to Premium Economy Upgrade (Return)

Virgin Atlantic 40000 Reward:
Virgin Atlantic LGW-MCO Economy

Virgin Atlantic 40000 Reward:
Virgin Atlantic LGW-MCO Premium Economy Companion Return

Virgin Atlantic 50000 Reward:
Virgin Atlantic LGW-MCO Premium Economy to Upper Class Upgrade (Return)

It seems pretty easy to use the free tickets ie the 40000 reward but the upgrades/companion tickets all seem to depend on what you have originally paid for your ticket.

(I don't think you could but a p/e ticket for £600 or £700 and then use 50000 miles to upgrade it. I think it would have to be a full price ticket  )

Rob

ps

You can spend online Virgin Miles

Remember to enter the departure and destination as London and Orlando, not as lgw and mco.

Many thanks. The Economy Companion ticket looks good at 'only' 30,000 miles (although I guess it will have to be full price economy not discounted rates).

Do you know if Virgin miles expire? I've had these for a little while and don't want to miss out on them.

Regards

Rob

They do have an expiry date, but if you have some activity on your account the expiry date is extended.
