Many private homes are bought expressly for the purpose of renting them out for location shoots. Film & TV studios prefer this over having to find a home on their own, with an owner who doesn't know what they are in for.
At many of the shoots. cabinets, bookcases, & refrigerators that are mounted on the walls literally get taken down & moved to make room for camera & lighting equipment. Some camera operators will literally sit on top of refrigerators to get a better shot. Some furnishings, like a too shiny door or window get sprayed down to make them less glossy.
Even though they are paid handsomely for the use of their home, private home owners who aren't usually in the business of renting out their homes & having it dismantled like that, often get upset. They view it as their home first & weren't expecting it to be pulled apart like that. It costs money to calm down an irate home owner while the set & camera crew are waiting for permission to move that cabinet. Although, in the contract, they already got the permission, but when the owner is there squawking about it, if makes for a rough shoot.
The Apprentice filmed for 5 weeks in LA. You can bet they trashed that home a bit - if even unintentionally.
Renting from someone who knows what to expect goes so much easier for everyone involved. Plus they usually have bought the right furnishings in the first place. Getting an Italian marble mantle in a satin matte finish over a glossy high polished one, looks better on camera. And no need to spray it down, or clean up afterwards.
For those home owners, having the use of a luxury home with top of the line furnishings when they are not renting it out, is worth all the strangers traipsing through & ripping the place apart.
