We were at the registration desk at the GCH checking in, and I jokingly asked if the snail lamp in front of me had a name. Hannah (our CM) said yes indeed, his name was Swirly! And she proceeded to name all of the other nearby animal lamps on the long counter (one of the other snail lamps was Turbo and there were salamander lamps as well).
I asked if that was "official Disney" and she said that yes it was! All of the lamps have their names taped to them on the underside of the lamp. She lifted up the lamp, and sure enough, a white piece of paper that read "Swirly" was taped to the bottom!
The story she told was a couple came to the GCH for their 10 year wedding anniversary and asked if it was ok if they gave the snail on the lamp at their registration desk a name. They wrote the name down on a slip of paper and placed it under the lamp. The same couple came back to the GCH for their 20th wedding anniversary and checked under the snail lamp they named 10 years ago, and the slip of paper with the name was still under there! So the staff decided to "officially" name all the animal lamps on the registration counter and put the names under the lamps, the same way the couple had done, but this time with tape so they would stay firmly in place.
Not 100% sure if the story is true or not, take it with a sprinkle of pixie dust I'm sure, but the lamps are really all named, just ask a registration CM to show you!
