if you want to see zebras and giraffes, request the arusha savannah, its the only on with zebras

Sorry, but that's not entirely correct. DH & I were on the Sunset Savanna the first part of September and we had about 4 to 5 zebra's daily plus tons of giraffes, birds and the big animals that look like steers (can't remember what they're called). :rolleyes1

Arusha savanah, yes, but also add zebra trail, Arusha rock. THAT is the best location. We stayed the first time right in front of the feeding hole. Saw animals all the time. This trip we were on the arusha savanah but the other side and saw a relatively small amount animals. The animals that were out there were covered by the tall trees on that side. Zebra trail is so much better and it's also closer to the pool and food court.

Is there a particular savannah that is better to request? Are the animals the same on all the savannahs? Is it possible to request to see both giraffes and zebras in the same savannah? Which is the best location to request or is it too much thinking and should just let them assign you what they assign you?

Thank you everyone for the great information.

Yep, there are zebra on the Sunset Savannah too. A different type than on Arusha from what I recall.

i have just booked a standard room at akl for september 2009 for 14 nights. now what i was wanting to know is what room numbers are the poor savannah views( i heard that these rooms are sold as standard due to the poor view). i am just trying to work out where i would want my room to get the best view for the price i am paying.

any suggestions of which room to request and when should i make the request?

Did you ever get an awnser to this question, I am interested in that also.

We are staying in a concierge room next May, but they have told me there are 4 king bed concierge rooms and only 1 of those is on the Zebra trail. I have also read that the Zebra trail is the most ideal location, so which of these should I make my main request? Is Zebra trail really that much better than the Kudu trail? Also, I just wanted to double check that the credit card number I give them for the safari will not be charged until the trip. Thanks!

I think I have read positives about all the savanna's on this board. I didn't request one for my trip because of that. I think we'll be ok. :thumbsup2

Sorry, I can't answer the safari question but am curious for the answer too :)

I have a Q for you all; We will be staying at the AKV in Feb 09 and I am debating if you should have a rental car or not. I know AKV has there own transportation that doesn't stop at other resorts. For those who just used the Disney transportation were you happy with it or would you do a rental car the next time? Were just visitng 4 parks most of our ADR are at the parks besides Chef Mickeys which we will be at Magic Kingdom that day so I think we can take the monorail over to the Contemp? Any input would be great!

I've stayed on Kudu Trail many times and have always enjoyed it. In fact, one of our worst Savannah Views was on Zebra Trail. :confused3 (although I've had other Zebra Trail rooms that were wonderful too!)

Your credit card will not be charged until the day of the Safari. They only have the # on file as a "guarantee" should you be a no-show. :)

That's what I was thinking too. It might be better just to see what you end up with. Sounds like all the Savannahs are good.

I don't see the need for a rental car while at AKL. The buses were great, and we didn't have a problem getting anywhere. However, sometimes it's good to have a rental car for peace of mind.

We drive to WDW when we go, and while at AKL I didn't use the truck once. I did end up driving a fair amount at POP, but not while at AKL, if that helps.

As far as taking the monorail to CR for Chef Mickeys, you can even walk from MK to CR, if you don't feel like using the monorail.

Have a good trip! :goodvibes

i thought all regular (non dvc) concierge rooms were on the zebra trail?

No, they're on either Zebra or Kudu, generally in the first 2 blocks of rooms off the lobby. For Kudu, that would be rooms numbered 4211 - 4241; Zebra rooms numbered 4407 - 4437. (and yes, there have been CL guests who have been located further from the lobby than those rooms, but those are the most common and all CL non-DVC rooms are guaranteed a Savanna View.) HTHs! :)

Here's the link to the resort map: http://www.wdwinfo.com/resortmaps/aklmap.htm

We were Non DVC Concierge and we were rm 4321.....about 6 1/2 miles from civilization nevermind the lobby ! BUT we loved it of course. Ou friends were Non DVC and Concierge and were equally as far down the other trail.

Heading to AKL next month - going to a conference at the Swan/Dolphin, but am staying at AKL by choice. I really enjoy the artwork, theming, Boma, the aroma. Last time I stayed at AKL was 3 years ago with the family (although I have made it to Jiko and Boma once more each when I was in town for business).

Since this is a solo adult trip, what should I be sure not to miss? One plan is to walk the halls and truly look at all the artwork.

Help!!

I dont suppose anyone has a photo (at a printable resolution for our photo album) of the whole concierge lounge do they? we took several but none really came out well enough to print.

Also, (this might sound odd!), has anyone got one also of the button panel inside the elevators?

Have a wonderful trip. My recommendations would be the culinary tour at Jiko and Boma (started at 3;45 pm when we were staying there) and the culture talk in the evening. There used to be an arts tour, but it was not offered when I was staying there, but it might be worth to ask about it. Besides that I would suggest to talk to the cast members at the savanna outlooks. They are all from Africa and love to tell you about their home countries.
