The Alaskan Jewel! Welcome Aboard….You don’t Exist!

This really does look like a fun excursion. I have never seen an episode of the show. Looking forward to reading more.

Love the pictures of Ketchikan. I do love it when clouds hug the mountains.

You saw the Time Bandit! That is awesome. Mike and I have been watching the show since the beginning.

I'm so glad things started looking up on your cruise. And the pics so far or gorgeous. Maybe we should be considering NCL for Alaska next year?

Ketchikan looks like such an interesting place to walk around and explore. Did it seem crowded with all those ships in port? So cool to see the Time Bandit. Love your family selfie!!

It did not seem crowded at all, which surprised me.

This excursion looks fun already. I know nothing about the show but I like the boat set up and all the scenery is just gorgeous! Glad Skip found a good hat, bonus that it wasn't pricey.

It was really an interesting tour and you don't even have to watch the show to enjoy it, of course you understand some little things they say and do from watching the show....but those are kind of extras in excitement...well for Skip it was. LOL.

I am glad that Skip found something suitable at the outlet. The setup of the boat is very unusual. I am not quite sure what to make of it.

Corinna

The boat is set up for tours. They told us how they just planned to take people out on the boat and of course then faced all these rules and regulations to have public on it so they had to put in the whole seating area.

I love the mist and clouds too.

Skip was so excited to just see it from afar and a little jealous he missed it docked.
If you are going to do Alaska, I won't sway you from one line to another, and most excursions are with all lines....but if you want to go with a little bigger of a room and keep the price down you can go into the suite class for much cheaper on NCL. For the same cost of DCL we could've gone into the Haven class rooms.

OH man, these photos really make me want to go to Alaska MORE now! Love the selfie :)

It really is such a beautiful place.

The travel time to the first destination was going to be about 30-40 minutes. We were invited to look around the boat as they had pots and other fishing equipment for us to look at. They also have a smoking section for those that need to know that…it’s on the very back of the ship.

From the back of the boat.

Captain Terry is up there.

As I circled around to the front, Captain Terry gave me a pose.

catch29 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I believe this guy’s name was Andy.

catch30 by Jenseib, on Flickr

More scenery.

catch31 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Chief was such a friendly guy. He talked to anyone who asked a question.

catch32 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And then I saw it….a jumping salmon!

CATCH33 by Jenseib, on Flickr

They said the pink salmon were the ones running up currently.

There also was a ton of floating logs we sailed by.

catch34 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Another plane!!!

catch35 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch36 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch37 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Captain Terry was just chilling as he drove us along.

catch38 by Jenseib, on Flickr

They had us sit back down and talked to us about some of the things we would be seeing.

catch3 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Chief was bating this pot.

catch39 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We also were given the history of this boat and how it was almost lost at sea…twice. This little boat has gone through a lot and was still salvageable both times.

We going to be heading into protected waters. I believe this was a tribe’s area and you have to have permission to go here (or at least fish) and this tour group has permission. It was a very peaceful ride.

Up next….. Let’s do some fishing!

I am loving these updates! Your photos are stunning as always, and I can't believe how old Claire is getting! I love that you saw the Time Bandit, and as soon as I saw the name on the other boat I knew you were on one. DH and I have watched the show pretty much since the beginning. It's a gritty reality show, and they don't sugarcoat anything! I just can't believe how shiny those crab pots on the deck are! Normally they're pretty rusty and rough looking, not a shiny and clean!

How cool to catch that jumping salmon!

That's great they let you guys explore the ship, I was thinking you'd have to sit the whole time. How long was this excursion? Sorry if you've said this already.

All caught up, Jen.

I had to google "Deadliest catch" as this is not familiar here, but your tour sounds awesome. Can't wait for more.

The scenery is absolutely beautiful and that jumping salmon is amazing.

Corinna

I was happy to catch one in air too.

Claire is growing up so much.
Yes, those pots were super shiney. I wondered if they were the real thing or a cheaper version for show.

I think it was about 3 hours. I would have to go look at my planner. it really is a good excursion...lots for everyone to see and learn.

All caught up, Jen.

It's a reality show about crab fishing. These guys go in the winter time and the seas are so rough. And of course some are good workers and some aren't. And it's incredibly hard work.

We continued on our way to the area where the first fishing spot was located.

I took pictures of the scenery and parts of the boat as I listened to the stories that Andy and Chief were telling.

Pictures just do not do justice. The scenery was stunning and every which way you looked there was something amazing.

catch50 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Chief told us about the hooks they use. In the old days they used one like this.

catch51 by Jenseib, on Flickr

They now use one that is more of a swirl which tends to catch more fish and if they do get away they are not permanently damaged.

catch52 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch53 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch60 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch54 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And the guys set to work.

catch58 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch59 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch55 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Chief was hoping we got something as yesterday this one was empty.

catch61 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I think we ended up getting 2 of these guys. I cannot tell you what they are but they aren’t good for eating. However, they are good to use as bait or to feed other species. They said they don’t let anything go to waste.

catch63 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch64 by Jenseib, on Flickr

This was the replacement all baited and ready to go out and take its place.

catch65 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch67 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch68 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Chief talked a bit about the fish.

catch69 by Jenseib, on Flickr

But cut it short as we came into this area.

catch66 by Jenseib, on Flickr

You can’t see it very well but there is an eagle in one of the trees.

catch70 by Jenseib, on Flickr

They threw some fish out to lure the birds out.

catch71 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Mainly they would fly by and go back to the trees. They said because the salmon was running these guys were eating a lot and the fish they were throwing was not as appetizing.

catch72 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch74 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch73 by Jenseib, on Flickr

eagle1 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch75 by Jenseib, on Flickr

They explained how strong an eagle’s wings are. Not only can they fly but they can swim too. They said that if they catch something too big to pull out of the water they will swim with it in their claws and get it to land. They are pretty stubborn and won’t let go of anything.

catch76 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch77 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch78 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch79 by Jenseib, on Flickr

After a while though they wouldn’t fly much. They realized what fish was being tossed and it wasn’t as good as the salmon I guess.

catch80 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch81 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch82 by Jenseib, on Flickr

A last try did lure some out again.

catch83 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch84 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Of course some just stared at us like we were crazy.

catch85 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And then we moved on while Chief and Andy talked about these fish.

catch86 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch87 by Jenseib, on Flickr

He’s an ugly sucker, isn’t he?

catch88 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch89 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And I captured some more scenery.

catch90 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch91 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And a jumping salmon!

catch92 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch93 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch95 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch94 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch96 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I know I have said it over and over…but I just loved the scenery.

catch97 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Up Next…Finally some crabs!

Ok that excursion looks amazing! Almost like a few excursions combined into one. And that view, that view is to die for.

Doesn't seem like you even need to be a big deadliest catch fan to enjoy it

Oh my goodness, that scenery is just breathtaking!!! and how cool to see the eagles so close, you got some gorgeous pictures of them!

Okay so I came over to catch up and was all ready to post comments and then, BAM, you see the Time Bandit and everything before that point became a blur. I love love love Deadliest Catch. I would have freaked the heck out! For real, I don't remember what I wanted to comment on before that point except glad that everything finally got straightened out and you could enjoy your cruise.

I'm loving this Deadliest Catch excursion and can hardly wait to read more about it.

Loving your trip report. We are big Disney Cruise fans, we will be on our 15th cruise over Christmas. But my kids are now ageing out of the clubs (where does the time go??) We are looking into some different cruise lines. We feel the food on Disney is just OK, but the food on your trip looks great!! Did you feel is was better? Also with the deals you were able to get did you feel you paid less? Or just got more with the speciality dining and the other perks? Looking foward to more rerports.
Thanks

Ugly sucker is right! Everything else is like a dream, so beautiful and amazing! I cannot wait for my trip! Your pics are awesome!

It has so much to offer. And yes you don't have to be a fan of the show to enjoy it.

What a fantastic excursion! And yes, that was one ugly fish haha!:fish:

LOl..very ugly.

Oh my goodness, that scenery is just breathtaking!!! and how cool to see the eagles so close, you got some gorgeous pictures of them!

it really is all breath taking. I was telling Skip how some friends of ours are planning a Caribbean cruise for Feb and he said why on earth would anyone want to go to the Caribbean. LOL! After Alaska he just can't imagine going on a cruise to anywhere else.

Skip was just so excited about the whole port. So many neat things to see and this excursion was a true highlight too. He was bound and determined to find the Time Bandit later, but he never did.

We had a penthouse suite (smallest suite class) and it came with all the current perk offers at the time we booked (regular rooms only get to pick 1) and it was still almost half the price of a balcony room on DCL for the same time period. We did not eat in the main dining room except for that first night. Though I am sure the food and choices are good. But with the specialty dining included we wanted to get the best use of that. Most of the food was very good.

Ugly sucker is right! Everything else is like a dream, so beautiful and amazing! I cannot wait for my trip! Your pics are awesome!

The scenery is just amazing and you can't even describe how beautiful it is and pictures just can't capture it.

Finally we were coming up to the first crab pot!

catch98 by Jenseib, on Flickr

The guys went to work to drag it in.

catch99 by Jenseib, on Flickr

It is much too heavy to bring in without some mechanical help.

catch100 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch101 by Jenseib, on Flickr

As you can see there is an octopus in there as well.

catch102 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Something I did not know is octopuses are bad for crab. They kill them.

catch103 by Jenseib, on Flickr

They pulled out some crab and then brought them around for us to see, touch and hold.

catch105 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch106 by Jenseib, on Flickr

A few were dead, probably from the octopus and those were thrown back in the water. They said other sea creatures will eat the dead ones.

catch107 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And they told us about the crab. There were a few different kinds and I don’t remember which was which or even all the names.

catch104 by Jenseib, on Flickr

How long can a crab survive out of water…..as long as it can before it dies. LOL. Yes there is no set time, but they can stay out pretty long.

catch108 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Claire was a little leery but she did take hold.

crab1 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch109 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Hello Mr. Crab!

catch110 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Skip was truly loving every minute of this.

crab2 by Jenseib, on Flickr

crab3 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I took several pictures of him in many different poses with the crab. He was being super silly.

catch111 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I told Claire to take one of me and she took about 15.

catch112 by Jenseib, on Flickr

After our fun we passed them on.

catch113 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch114 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch115 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And then it was time to say goodbye.

catch116 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch117 by Jenseib, on Flickr

catch119 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And we motored on to the next pot.
