The Adventures of Super Single Mom & Wonder Boy Aboard The Disney Magic 8/19-8/26/06
NOTE: I rarely post on the DIS, but constantly lurk. Excuse the length of the following trip report...I think since I don't post much, I've saved everything I've may have wanted to post about for this report. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!...This May Be LONG....
Background: O.K., I'm one of those Single Parents that you sometimes hear about. The kind that go overboard, trying to be everything & do everything that a traditional family does. So after last years Surprise Trip to WDW, I deceided to go one better this year w/ a 7-Night Western Double-Dip (no doubt) on the Disney Magic, also planned to be a surprise. We were planning to cruise w/a larger group of 15 other Friends & their Families...all total 10 adults, 7 kids. Let me just say this. I am excellent at keeping secrets from my 8 y/o, however, when there are 15 other people who know the secret, it becomes far more complicated. We booked early last November, needless to say the secret was out before Thanksgiving! Okay, Single Mom, no problem I say, someone else spilled the beans, but he doesn't know WHEN. So it was like having the best of both worlds: we had fun anticipating & planning but the only thing my DS knew was that it was going to happen sometime over the summer.
You would think that once June passed no cruise, July, no cruise, 1st week in August no cruise...camp is over and still no cruise that my usually highly intelligent DS would figure out when were were leaving. But I noticed that he has absolutely no idea what day/date it is if he isn't writing it on the heading of a ditto or spelling test!...
Oh to be so young and unencumbered.
So the Wednesday before we are scheduled to leave, my DF who has 2 sons , the older of whom my DS is close to, convinces me that it would be a good idea to take our kids to the Jersey Shore (Wildwood, our favorite shore point) just for the day so that the kids could ride the rides on the 3 piers and just have a night on the boardwalk. OK, I say even though I'm not packed, have to take a night off from work and spend money that was not in Single Moms budget, but hey Im a sucker for Wildwood even though I rarely ride a ride or take a dip in the ocean and far be it for me to let Wonderboy miss out on something his Nuclear Family Friends would be doing. But, I stressed to my DF, "Wonderboy, doesn't know were leaving on Saturday and I'm still trying to salvage the surprise" She says: the kids don't talk about that stuff, he still won't find out. OK fine, so Single Mom doning her SSM (Super Single Mom) cape agrees not only to go, but to drive the 1.5 hrs to Wildwood, and not 10 minutes into the trip, DFs, DS starts complaining about the fact that we wouldn't be going on the beach, so my DF screams to him about how ungrateful he's being, especially since were going a a big cruise in just 3 more days. Single Mom muters several "bad words" under her breath, but fortunately Wonder Boy is so tuned into playing his video game in the back seat and is so used to tuning out the rants of mothers he barely hears her.
DF kinda shrugs and we hit the Atlantic City Xpway...later, on the board walk we deceide to stop for dinner at a pizza parlor. The kids are talking and laughing as we wait for our food to arrive. Wonderboy makes a comment about doing some thing on Saturday. I freeze as I witness my surprise of 8 months about to unravel...as DF's DS says: "WE'RE GOING ON THE CRUISE ON SATURDAY!" Wonderboy's eyes light up and he shouts "FINALLY!"
The food arrives, the kids had pizza, I had a stromboli that after the previous conversation stuck in my chest like a cold Mickey waffle. When the check came, a few tears rolled out on my Supermom Cheeks, DF goes, "What? it's only $40!"
Boy, those nuclear moms just don't get it!.... NEXT....The Plot Thickens....
