The Adventures of Super Single Mom & Wonder Boy Aboard The Disney Magic 8/19-8/26/06

NOTE: I rarely post on the DIS, but constantly lurk. Excuse the length of the following trip report...I think since I don't post much, I've saved everything I've may have wanted to post about for this report. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!...This May Be LONG....

Background: O.K., I'm one of those Single Parents that you sometimes hear about. The kind that go overboard, trying to be everything & do everything that a traditional family does. So after last years Surprise Trip to WDW, I deceided to go one better this year w/ a 7-Night Western Double-Dip (no doubt) on the Disney Magic, also planned to be a surprise. We were planning to cruise w/a larger group of 15 other Friends & their Families...all total 10 adults, 7 kids. Let me just say this. I am excellent at keeping secrets from my 8 y/o, however, when there are 15 other people who know the secret, it becomes far more complicated. We booked early last November, needless to say the secret was out before Thanksgiving! Okay, Single Mom, no problem I say, someone else spilled the beans, but he doesn't know WHEN. So it was like having the best of both worlds: we had fun anticipating & planning but the only thing my DS knew was that it was going to happen sometime over the summer.

You would think that once June passed no cruise, July, no cruise, 1st week in August no cruise...camp is over and still no cruise that my usually highly intelligent DS would figure out when were were leaving. But I noticed that he has absolutely no idea what day/date it is if he isn't writing it on the heading of a ditto or spelling test!... :teacher:
Oh to be so young and unencumbered.

So the Wednesday before we are scheduled to leave, my DF who has 2 sons , the older of whom my DS is close to, convinces me that it would be a good idea to take our kids to the Jersey Shore (Wildwood, our favorite shore point) just for the day so that the kids could ride the rides on the 3 piers and just have a night on the boardwalk. OK, I say even though I'm not packed, have to take a night off from work and spend money that was not in Single Moms budget, but hey Im a sucker for Wildwood even though I rarely ride a ride or take a dip in the ocean and far be it for me to let Wonderboy miss out on something his Nuclear Family Friends would be doing. But, I stressed to my DF, "Wonderboy, doesn't know were leaving on Saturday and I'm still trying to salvage the surprise" She says: the kids don't talk about that stuff, he still won't find out. OK fine, so Single Mom doning her SSM (Super Single Mom) cape agrees not only to go, but to drive the 1.5 hrs to Wildwood, and not 10 minutes into the trip, DFs, DS starts complaining about the fact that we wouldn't be going on the beach, so my DF screams to him about how ungrateful he's being, especially since were going a a big cruise in just 3 more days. Single Mom muters several "bad words" under her breath, but fortunately Wonder Boy is so tuned into playing his video game in the back seat and is so used to tuning out the rants of mothers he barely hears her.

DF kinda shrugs and we hit the Atlantic City Xpway...later, on the board walk we deceide to stop for dinner at a pizza parlor. The kids are talking and laughing as we wait for our food to arrive. Wonderboy makes a comment about doing some thing on Saturday. I freeze as I witness my surprise of 8 months about to unravel...as DF's DS says: "WE'RE GOING ON THE CRUISE ON SATURDAY!" Wonderboy's eyes light up and he shouts "FINALLY!"
The food arrives, the kids had pizza, I had a stromboli that after the previous conversation stuck in my chest like a cold Mickey waffle. When the check came, a few tears rolled out on my Supermom Cheeks, DF goes, "What? it's only $40!"
Boy, those nuclear moms just don't get it!.... NEXT....The Plot Thickens....

Refusing to accept defeat, I wipe away the tears of disappointment of a ruined surprise and enjoy the rest of the evening on the boardwalk. Tomorrow, I will think of another way to keep the magic of surprise in this cruise.

Earlier in the week I 'd told my son that he would be getting his hair cut on Friday. So even though its now Thursday, I tell him that is Wednesday, and that I had to change his haircut to Thursday, because I had something I needed to do on Friday, (all in an attempt to confuse him about when Saturday actually was to keep the whole surprise thing alive)...hope you can all follow that. I was somewhat concerned about missing the plane myself, since at this point, I don't think I knew what day it was. :confused3
So we get the haircut on Friday, along with a few other last minute things, all the while WonderBoy is still thinking its Thursday and hasn't even mentioed leaving on Saturday. That night I get him all showered and ready for bed, I still had some packing to do and needed him to be asleep. Why is this night beginning to feel like Christmas Eve?
He finally falls aseep around 10pm and I stay up the rest of the night packing/watching TV. I'm too nervous to sleep, because we had an early flight and needed to leave for the airport by 5:30am.

After showering, dressing and putting the 5 overly packed suitcases by the front door, I go to wake up a sleepy WonderBoy. He barely budged when I called his name and shook him a little. When he finally peered out of one eye, I said "Get Up...todays the day...We're going on the cruise!" :Pinkbounc :cool1: :cheer2: :cloud9:

And you know what....he was actually SURPRISED...I had done it!!!
Super Single Mom triumphs again!!!!!

Next time...A Hairy Departure

Your trip report makes me giggle, in a good way! I can't wait to read the rest of your report!!! :thumbsup2

Thanks everyone for all of your positive feedback. Eventually we will board the ship; just hang in here w/me a little while longer. :thumbsup2

As WonderBoy dresses, I decide to take the bags out to the car. My mom will drive to the airport as she lives only about 5 minutes away from us.
As I step out into the very early morning I am mugged by a massive wave of humidity. How can it be this humid when it's not even 6:00am yet? I then begin to panic...why you may wonder? Because I, like many African-American women am semi-obsessed w/my hair. Usually it's professionally styled, thick, smooth and full of body...EXCEPT, when it comes in contact w/extreme heat, humidity, salt water or sea air ...then it's like a Gremlin that's been fed after midnight!!! As I feel my hair begin to both shrivel & swell at the same time, I run back into my bedroom for some Beauty Back-up. I throw several different styles of hair pieces into my carry-on and kick myself for deciding not to get braids this trip. (too expensive, take too long, tangles my hair when taking them out, etc, etc). By the time we get to the airport, my hair style is completley gone and the TSA has all my ponytail holders, gels & pomades in a checked bag being packed beneath the plane somewhere.

At any rate, we board and have a smooth, uneventful flight. I sleep through most of it. Wonderboy happily plays his PSP through most of it, with occasional glances out of the window. Once at MCO, we board the DCL Deluxe Motorcoach and arrive at the port in about 45 minutes. It's about 12 noon when we enter and we receive boarding pass # 20. Check in was quick & easy, I get my kids club pager & WonderBoy gets his wristband.
Goofy's posing with guests for pictures and we get in line for ours. (I hope to be able to add pix soon)
The next day @ Shutters I see our photo w/Goofy. He's tall & Sharp looking in his Sailor's uniform, DS is happy & cute w/his Pluto shirt on and then there's SSM, w/the cute Pink/White Minnie Tee, Denim capri pants and hair that looks like it belongs to the Shaggy Dog!!!...this is so NOT a Penny Proud moment.
NEXT....WonderBoy orders escargot????

Thank you for sharing your trip. My dh and I leave tomorrow for 2 days in WDW and then on the cruise Saturday. I can't sleep (always happens) and I'm drinking coffee and looking for something to read. I really felt your pain when the surprise was leaked, but you handled it so well. I also like to surprise my children, but they are adults now (19 & 23) and it's a lot harder. Can't wait to read more.
