My oldest DD came to me at 4 this afternoon with a bunch of q-tips and told me she had blood in her ear and she wanted me to get it out. Oh my goodness, she had ALOT of blood in her ear. I asked her what happened and she said she used the the end of her glasses to scratch the inside of her ear. "We do not stick things in our ears." She then uses 6 q-tips to clean the blood out herself without telling me. I found them in the trash. :headache: I call the dr. With how late it was in the day, nothing was available. They had m e call urgent care so she could be seen tonight, but it is pretty far away so I had to get the appt for 7. That way DH would be home to sit with the 3 in the middle. At 6 we leave. Get there right at 7 and are in and out in 10 min. :woohoo: Thankfully, the ear drum is fine, but she got the canal pretty good. There is still blood in there, but leave it alone. She has a script for ear drops with an antibiotic in it. Dr says "The moral is: don't stick anything in your ears." Off we go, stopping to get dinner. I got her a yogurt parfait for dessert and warned her not to do it again just to get a parfait. :lmao: Drive an hr home and drop off the prescription. Wait 20 mins, pick it up and leave. Now it is dark out, I hate driving in the dark. Cue lightning and thunder. Oh, great, I also hate driving in the rain. It starts to pour. We can't see anything and I have to drive 20 under the speed limit and I can still feel the water pulling the vehicle. Finally make it home, wet, but fine. And DD is once again reminded, "We DO NOT stick things in our ears." And I thought it was going to be a nice quiet night. :rotfl:

Thank goodness she didn't puncture the eardrum! Poor kid. Poor mom!

She was crying. She was worried she was in trouble. I tried to explain that she wasn't in trouble. We just wanted to make sure her ear was fine, and DON'T do it again. It could have been much worse.
She was just rubbing it on her shoulder to itch it and it started bleeding again. She's gonna have a rough time till it heals.

I'm thinking your DD certainly will remember not to stick anything in her ear after that!
Sometimes situations like these seem to get compounded by "life" ie the storm!
I'm sorry for your experience and hope she feels better soon!

Get Q-Tip brand cotton swabs. If she ever decides to start using cotton swabs to clean out her ears, the brand name Q-tip ones are best. It's usually the generics that fall off inside the ear.

Much like your DD, I had to learn this the hard way. :)

Poor baby, hope she is feeling better:hug:

I have a 'nutty' aunt that was scratching at her ear with a knitting needle and..................you guessed it, she slipped and burst her ear drum.

Koala cuddles to your little one.
Trish

Nothing should be inserted into the ear canal. Not even cotton swabs, regardless of brand. I've had numerous ear infections throughout the years and every single doc I've been to has given me a speech about cotton swabs. I don't use them! Sheesh.

I hope her ear heals quickly. The itching may drive her buggy, poor little one.

It's true, nothing smaller than the elbow, or as one doc said, nothing smaller than the little finger (pinky) should ever be inserted in the ear canal by anyone other than a doctor.

My 2 yr old DD had bleeding of the ear due to an ear tube shifting earlier in the spring. While we were sitting in the er, a mom and her 14 year old daughter came in and sat across from us. The girls ear was bleeding as well. She had an ear infection and thought if she used a sryinge (sp?) she could PULL the fluid off her ear!!! No one told her the fluid was behind the ear drum.

Needless to say when Mom found out - the yell was heard through out the er : "We DO NOT put things in our ears!!!"

Not funny for them but all the others in the er got a laugh.

Oh Kerrie :rotfl2:

Only 4 more to go with the ear thing

First of all, I hope your little girl feels better!

I have to share a story with you about another little girl who stuck Qtips in her ear. My husband and I had to take my youngest DS to the ER Memorial Day weekend (Sunday night). He ended up having HIVES. However, while we were waiting to be seen, a family came in with their 4 year old daughter. They sit down beside us and the dad asked what we were there for (as if he couldn't see the horrible rash covering my sons entire body). I then asked why they were there and this was his response: "We were enjoying a nice day at the lake with our family when she stuck a Qtip in her ear. About the time her mama said well at least it's not bleeding blood starting coming out of her ear. So now here I sit intoxicated at the Children's ER."

Gotta love East Tennessee!

Oh goodness, I'm glad her ear will be OK. As a mom who spent the better part of yesterday afternoon trying to get a thorn out of DD9's foot (who was SCREEEEEEAAAMING the whole time), I'd like to add...

This is why we wear shoes when we go outside! :headache:

btw I go through this at once each summer. At least we learned the lesson early this season.

Kerrie, hopefully she will pass on this lesson to her younger siblings so that you only have to go through this adventure once (we know the pot-stirrer will come up with her own unique adventures).

Thankfully, the pot-stirrer has been pretty indestructible to this point, even with all her climbing, sitting on the very edge of everything, jumping, and all around wildness. She's only been hurt once and that was because she was throwing a fit. She didn't want her brother to sit next to me and was trying with all her 1 yr old mite to move him out of the way. She managed to to move him some, but over shot the effort and flew over the arm of the couch, hitting her head on the tile. I could see her going, but I was nursing the baby and couldn't grab her. I yelled "Joe" for DH to grab her, but he was on the other couch and didn't know why I was yelling anyways. Her head made the loudest THUD. Took awhile to calm her down and we kept her up awhile to make sure she was ok. There was blood in her mouth and we didn't know where it came from. My heart just about stopped.
The next day she didn't even have a bump on her head where she hit the tile. She was perfectly fine. I think she's too mean to get really hurt. :lmao:
