On Friday, I became unemployed for the first time. I was working as a Network Administrator for a civil engineering and surveying firm in the Chicago suburbs. The firm has around 50 employees between two offices.
I was working in the server room when one of the partners walked by to say he wanted to talk to me. We sat down in the conference room and the head partner told me that after September 11th, new work has just fallen off of the table, and that they can't afford to keep two IT people. Since I was the newest hire, I was the one to be let go. I am the first person to ever be laid off from the firm, and they hadn't even thought about severence pay. When I asked him about it, he said that they don't have a policy for it, but he eventually said that I will get two weeks severence.
So, this morning I get to go and file for unemployment. I have been sending out resumes to various job sites all weekend. I have been in contact with as many people that I know to let them know that I am looking for a job, and to keep me in mind if they see an opening.
Not ever being in this situation before, I have to tell you it is a little scary. There are former co-workers of mine who have been out of work ksince April, due to the loss of jobs in the IT industry. I hope that I can find something soon.
Thanks for letting me get that off of my chest.
