Well fingers crossed I can get it to work for our next cruise on the Fantasy in a week and a half. Just in case I will get the WhatsApp. If that doesn’t work I will get a bit of internet to check in.

I definitely think it depends on some of your Apple settings too as to how easily Apple boots you off the system- normally my son is able to stay on the entire sailing, but I normally get booted off midway and I have no idea what settings are different but it’s something (same phone same plan)

WhatsApp has worked really well for us so I hope it works well for you as well. You might also want to see what your international plan is. When I go to ports I find it is often cheaper to just use my international plan while the ship is docked ($10 per day for me)

When I got kicked off, I had to sign back in with my Apple ID. I tried not to text too much on my cruise, just in case. Only wanted to check in every few days.

Although expensive, the WiFi on the Dream last fall worked well. I would buy if from around 1 pm to the following day at 1pm, to sort of get two days in one 24 hour period.

The international plan is to much I think it is 16-17 dollars a day. . We are from Canada. Usually we can find free internet when in ports.

I think my husband was looking into some plan for when we are in Spain.

Usually I wouldn’t care and stay unplugged but my sister in law just found out she is stage 4 cancer and the Car T cell thing didn’t work. They don’t want us to cancel.

We are platinum and have used iMessage every cruise without buying internet from DCL.

Not sure if something has changed recently or what- but it did not work on the Magic in March without internet at all.

The only time I was able to use iMessage was in the Bahamas when I purchased the international service through my carrier.

We board the Magic on Monday. In the past we have been able to text our younger son at home who has an iphone. Our older son has Android and we can't text him.

We don't text often but it's convenient when we can. Of course any free perk, DCL will find a way to squash it.
Dh continues to buy iphones just so that when we cruise, we can stay in touch back home.

Texting vs internet really depends on your individual needs. On our last cruise in December we took an internet package because we flew to the cruise and I wanted to be able to check into our flight the day before while still on the ship and keep tabs on the flight status. On prior cruises we did not feel the need for internet because we drove to the port and were able to just text home using our iPhones.

Have everyone download WhatsApp (its free) and you will be able to text both of them (even group text) on the free DCL wifi (no pics, no calls without buying internet but still is nice)
