Tesco Clubcard vouchers exchange for Virgin air miles

Posted a couple of times but I am sure there are people that still don't know.

Just make sure you buy the correct code if wanting to upgrade, you can't just buy the cheapest available, has to be full adult fare (W, S, Y, B, R, L,)

sorry to butt in on this post, but we've got about £350 of tesco vouchers, would it be worth converting these into VA air miles? Also, if we did book a flight without using airmiles through VA, then converted some vouchers into airmiles, could we then upgrade to PE? If so, would we have to pay more taxes etc? Trying to find a use for my vouchers as using against a virgin holiday doesn't seem that worthwhile. Thanks

Using airlmiles can be a bit hit and miss for value. We have saved a small fortune with them over the years but others struggle to use them. You can buy a flight then upgrade using miles, that would not cost any extra in taxes but you have to buy the correct seats to start with, you can't just buy the cheapest economy seat.
When you price up on there site look at the fare breakdown, it will give you the booking code, so for eg. 4th-10th Oct MAN~MCO is showing at £619 but the code is 'x' so no good for upgrading, you need to search below for the correct codes that are upgradeable cheapest for these example dates would be £959 then 25k miles to upgrade to PE or 50k miles to Upper.

thanks for your advice Wayne, will have another look and see what flights are coming out as.

Any tips for making club card upgrade scenario work. I have hypothetically looked at lgw-MCO ( vs 27 ) 30/10/12 returning vs 28 13/11/12' flexible economy ( class Y ) price £5524 ! , the lowest price PE for these dates is £ 4224. Are there any particularly good dates or tips to get the best value out of using club card miles?

As wayneg explains, using airmiles can be hit or miss, here's a current 'hit' example taken this morning from the VA web site.

Flight - London Gatwick to Orlando International.
Sunday 22 July return Sunday 05 August
Economy £843
Premium Economy £1,186
Premium Economy (miles plus money) £758 when using 7,500 virgin miles.

So at the moment it is cheaper to book a Premium Economy ticket with 7,500 'miles plus money' than buying an economy ticket.

That's a big hit if your looking to book now for July-August so 'miles plus money' is one way of using your club card points.

The 'miles plus money' discounted ticket in economy is around £40 cheaper (can be more or less) and you will need to exchange 2,000 miles.

For your Oct-Nov dates it is quoting today in economy £518 and for a premium economy seat £1,154.

Whereas 'miles plus money' in economy is 2,000 miles + £475 and premium economy 7,500 miles + £890.

And there nothing stopping you and your partner each having a Tesco club card and both receiving the 1,000 Flying Club bonus miles when opting in.

Good luck with your choice.

Forgot to say the upgrade ticket from economy to premium economy requires 10,000 miles whereas the miles plus money ticket requires only 7,500 mies and can be cheaper in price when compared to a flexible economy ticket which you will require to upgrade

Thanks, good point re: using miles plus money rather than a straight points upgrade. I have around 105000 miles to use at the moment and plan on making the most of them.
